The backs and bottoms of the seats on the Native Watercraft Marvel 14.5 Tandem Kayak adjust for comfortable paddling and remove easily for car-top travel. And if you've ever been out on the water, realized you forgot to adjust your foot rests, and then come close to capsizing while trying to adjust, you'll be stoked to know it's easy to fix these foot braces even while you're underway. Thigh pads on the Marvel 14.5 Tandem Kayak prevent the cockpit rim from digging into your legs. It can be difficult to steer tandem kayaks—especially when it's windy or there are ocean currents to deal with. In those cases, grab the Marvel 14.5 with a rudder and steer a straight course along the shore.
Bottom Line: This tandem kayak keeps you and your partner comfortable on lake and ocean day trips.
Is this kayak a good choice for heavier people? I want to make sure a wide variety of people can fit in and use the kayak on a small lake in Minnesota.
The max weight is about 450 lbs, so that would include a couple larger folks at a time. If you look at some of guru photos above, you will see there is plenty of extra room in the cockpit
Marvel Kayak hatches are big so its easier to get big items in the boat. These hatches dont have moving parts and arent rubber. So they are easy to put on and off, easy to get gear into, and do not have any moving parts that could break.
i'm considering this tandem for my wife and i. we're used to solo units with no rudders and we tend to be on class 1 rapids.in a very shallow river. We tend to hit bottom quite a bit. my question is focused on the rudder. do you tend to use a rudder in those type of conditions? i thought rudder use would be mainly for 'deeper' water usage.

The "First Class Seats" in Native Marvel kayaks drain water, vent air, and are very suportive. They are made out of recycled materials with no foam or solvents like a lot of kayak seats. They arent black so they dont get hot and sweaty. They also snap out of the boat for loading a lighter boat and make a quick and easy camp/beach chair on longer trips.
I have a fiberglass QCC cockpit kayak, but this tandem is pretty nice when you want to kayak with someone. It's very stable and relatively easy to paddle. When I picked it up, I kayaked several lakes in central California by myself and it wasn't difficult at all. You can slide the seats around to several different positions which makes solo kayaking possible. Also, the seats can come out very easily which is great when you want to come ashore and just relax.... no need to carry other gear and certainly more comfortable than just sitting on a blanket or towel. And the seats are surprisingly comfortable. Maybe the biggest reason to buy this tandem over others. Mine seems to have a tendency to track a bit left, but not a huge problem. I'm looking to fit it with a rudder which should make for much easier tracking..... but certainly not necessary. I'm very pleased with it. Again, the adjustable/removeable seats are the biggest selling point on this tandem.
This tandem kayak is big enough for two adults and a small child. Although the Marvel only comes with two adult seats, you can add the native kids seat special order, and the kids seat works great. This boat tracks well and is very stable. The rear hatch is really big and its easy to get on and off. ITs not made of rubber and it doesnt have hinges that can get clogged with sand. The Marvel hatch is big enough that it is easy to get larger dry bags and gear into it. A lot of hatches are too small and you can't fit larger dry bags into them. There is a foam wall that is sealled off, so this rear compartment is dry storage, but also safety flotation. The seats offer a lot of lower and total back support and are easily adjustable while on the water. Unlike a lot of kayak seats, the marvels seats can quick release out of the boat. this is handy becuase you can lighten the boat for loading and unloading by taking the seats out. Native says the seats weight 7 1/2 lbs, so for those of us who want a light boat for loading, this boat weighs 47 lbs with the seats out! With the seats out it also makes it easier to clean the boat if it gets muddy. Also, for longer days on the water, its like having crazy creek chairs with you but not taking up anymore space in the boat. I like that i dont have to take the crazy creek chairs anymore on camping trips. Its just nice to have a beach chair when kayaking to an island for lunch, camping, or for just taking a break or to fish from the bank with the kids. This boat also has a drain plug in the middle of the side deck for draining any splash water out, and again easier to clean out mud and sand than the boats with the drain plug in the end. The Marvel is also a solo boat. You just have to take the seats out and move one to the center postion. THe cockpit is pretty big, room to add a dog and enough gear for weekend overnights are easy this way. For the money, this is one of the lightest most comfortable tandems available. New paddlers may want to add a rudder. Great first time family of 3 boat, or an excellent choice for grandparents who want to a 2nd kayak to paddle with kids but also solo.
No, the rudder pedals only work for the stern paddler when in the tandem configuration. Use sweep and rudder strokes to turn the boat when paddling solo. hope this helps
I'm looking at the picture provided for this kayak. Why does the front seat seem awfully far forward. It looks like the person in front would have a hard time bending their legs without it rubbing inside against the kayak? Has anyone had problems with space and comfortability up front? Hopefully that seat can move back. Maybe since the statistically heavier larger taller male is in the back, the female up front sits comfortably?
I wouldn't worry about the front seat leg room. I've had a 5'8" person up there with plenty of leg room. Just slide the footpegs forward. Leg room is not a problem.
No problems for most paddlers to adjust the footpegs and have the Knees bent and resting comfortably on the Thigh/Knee pads. Check out some of the pics of couples in the tandem configuration, plenty of room for legs up around the Knee pads.
This boat is so much lighter than any other rec tandems we have tried. We love it. We take it out with our two small children, but when the wife gives me a hall pass, I can take one seat out and configure the boat for solo paddling. The hatch really works well, its not like the other cheap rubber hatches out there, its easy to take on and off, seals well, whether it is hot or cold out. Take the seats out and its more than 20 lbs lighter to car top. Way lighter and more comfortable than anything else on the market.
I use an Aqua-bound stingray and stand behind any of the Aqua-bound paddles that can be found here: http://www.backcountry.com/store/subcat/100000001/Paddles.html#app=price%7E+group%7E+brand%7E100000817+sortby%7E+cat%7E100000005+subcat%7E100000001+offset%7E+on_sale%7E+page_name%7E Just be sure to use the sizing chart to find the correct length. This boat is 31" wide, so plug your height into the chart. I hope this helps.
this kayak is pretty stable, but if your dog is jumping around and moving from side to side, you may not stay upright for very long. But for most purposes, it's a very stable kayak.
I purchased approx. 1 month ago and it's amazing how easy this Kayak is to use. It's lite, the seat is very comfortable and easily adjustable, it can accommodate more than one person, and it has a high quality look and feel. I've paddled solo without a problem. I've also had my wife up front, my 4 year old son at center, and I was in the back. I use it on Lake Winnepesauke in NH in both calm waters and brisk winds. Helpful hint, get the rudder. I'm glad I did.
Is there enough room for 2 adults to paddle and carry the gear needed to stay 1 week in the Boundary Waters? (2 person tent, 2 sleeping bags, 2 sleeping pads, clothing, food)
I doubt there would be that much room, however, there is some room behind the rearward seat and some room in the front hull. There is also the netting on the forward deck..... still, I doubt if you could fit all that gear and food etc in this boat. You could also put some stuff between your legs, but it would be "iffy".....

Can I have a rudder installed before it's shipped? Or how hard is it to install 'after-market' and where is most economical source to buy a rudder for the 14.5 tandem marvel? thanks!!
A rudder DEFINITELY makes it easier to paddle in a straight line. If you can afford it, get it. Well worth the extra money. I don't have one on mine yet, but will get one soon. I have a rudder on my solo ocean kayak and it makes a huge difference. Instead of adjusting your course through your paddle strokes, you just keep on track with simple foot pedal movements to control your direction with the rudder. It's worth it!!!
The advantages of having the rudder are you can focus on paddling with your hands as your feet will control the rudder, it's also extremely helpful when the winds are heavy, and less hassle when you have more than 1 paddler. Trust me, it's an excellant option to have.
Its got the hatch and bulkhead so it has built in Flotation. Which coast? This boat is fine in bays, lakes, protected water. If you go paddling off shore, or launching/landing from the surf zone... I'd go with a sit on top.
our daughter started out on a 10 ft liquid logic. Very similar to the 10 ft Necky on this web site. It is made here in NC. Good seating and stability were the key tokeeping her interested
When I first bought this boat, I kayaked solo in several lakes on my way back down the eastern sierras in California. Not a problem. Not the ideal, but certainly comfortable. The seats are adjustable so you should be able to find a comfortable position.
It is a hybrid tandem and solo, so its not the perfect solo paddling boat, but its pretty close. You can move one of the seats to the middle of the kayak (not all tandem/solo hybrids have this ability) Its stable but not as wide as other solo/tandem hybrids. Most of all though, I think its the weight (solo 55lbs and tandem 62lbs) that makes it a good solo boat. With one seat out, it weighs in at 55 lbs. That is lighter than most other company's 14 1/2 foot boats, so you use less effort to go furhter easier. no dead weight in this thing. Most people dont relize how strong this plastic is. These Marvels dont oil can like other kayaks. The plastic is strong, light, and a lot stiffer than other boats I've owned or tried.
