Mutha Hubba Tent 3-Person 3-Season

You might think the pole system looks a bit unusual when you set up the MSR Mutha Hubba Tent, but when you and two camping buddies sit inside the roomy Mutha, you’ll understand. It’s all about lofty interior-space goodness.

  • Two large vestibules to keep gear dry and prepare food
  • Hub system sets up quickly
  • Stay-dry entrance design helps on rainy nights

Bottom Line: Avoid cramped space and the dreaded midnight elbow-to-the-eye.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

I find it to be not so much cold as it is accumulated snow fall. Three season shelters are designed more for ventilation. Your sleeping bag determines more of the cold temperature factor & especially if it has a Gore Windstopper, GoreTex, Microfiber, etc. shell.

perfect tent, very versatile

This thing is sweet, only used it once so far camping in Moab 2 weeks ago with the wife, and our 2 labs. One big, and one medium size, and we all slept comphy even with the big one sprawling a bit like he likes to. Having the 2 doors and vestys is a big plus. We combined this tent with 2 Big Agnes air core 2.5" / 78" /25" pads, and its just like being home on the old serta with room to spare. I would recommend this combo as the 2 pads, and tent weigh in at just over 12 lbs total, and the comfort to weight ratio is tremendous, gonna try it out backpacking soon, and hopefully get to run it through a good weather test.

I use the Stoic WTF compression sack(Large). It works great and holds my tent, rainfly, and footprint with room to spare. dem are about 2 1/2' wide by 20' tall. I use the Stoic bags for all my gear, i like my stuff long and tall instead of short and fat like a cannon ball.

I really like my tent. It is quick to set up and seems very durable. I have had it for over a year now and camped with it about 10 times. It is good for backpacking or car camping. I usually attach it to my pack and hike a couple of miles with it without a problem. I have never had any water or condensation looking at me when I woke up. I have been through some very serious storms in northern MN inside of this tent and it has ALWAYS held up. I dislike the footprint (which I had to order separately) because it does not fit perfectly, it works, but it isn't snug with the poles and tent. Overall I would highly recommend this tent. There are two doors, which is nice, easy in, easy out. I absolutely love it.
PROS:
+ keeps water out
+ quick set up
+ light & plenty of room

Cons:
- I wish the doors were next to the person's side and the pockets were by the persons head. Currently the doors are by your head or feet and the pockets on your side.
- the footprint works but it should fit the tent bottom better. I'm sure it will in future versions.
- I would like a stuff sack included. I would like to squeeze the tent as tight as possible. The one that comes with the tent keeps all of the components together but it could be better.

Overall : I love this tent!!!

Brandon, I agree with Simon. At over 6 pounds this tent is about to the point of being too heavy to backpack for long distances by yourself. Of course, with a tent this size I am assuming you are going with other people and you can divide the weight out between you. This is a quality tent that will perform for years.

This tent is lightweight, spacious, and expensive, so although it would be good for either pursuit, I'd probably go for something cheaper if I was just car camping.

Although there are tents with a slightly better size to weight ratio, this one is certainly on the lighter side for 3 season 3 person tents, and quite stormworthy. MSR's reputation is excellent, and If you only own one tent, you could do much worse than the Mutha Hubba.

MSR Hubba Bubba

By:
August 10, 2010

During the summer of 2006, I bought the MSR Fling, which was light weight with shortcomings: sides flapped in the wind and allowed rain to penetrate the tub liner; head clearance was limited. I traded for the MSR Hubba Bubba and have been happy ever since. Hubba Bubba frame clicks together under self-propulsion. I achieve quick set-up time whenever the sun sets or sudden cloud falls. Clearances for head and gear are adequate. Hubba Bubba stands up to all kinds of weather and vents well according to desire.
I have climbed 20 Fourteeners this summer and trust my Hubba Bubba in any remote wilderness setting.

You have to have the footprint for that type of pitch.

I would definitely recommend getting the footprint as well if that is how you plan to pitch it.

The Best 3 person / 3 season tent.

By:
June 12, 2010

My wife and my 13 year old son and I purchased this tent for use here in the Florida summer. The full mesh body was very appealing with the thought of making the best of any slight night time breeze in the summer heat. It works very well. We have spent five nights in the tent in the last month. Fortunately the weather has been beautiful, although hot and humid, but this tent actually makes it tolerable.

We have hiked quite a bit with it and, although it is not an ultralight tent, it is one of the lightest weight tents for the the size and the load can be easily split among the people who will be using it.

The quality of the material is state of the art. The poles and nylon fabric are all precision made. The tent is very easy to set up with one person. Set up goes faster with two people although it isn't necessary. The two vestibules and double doors are very nice features. Something that hasn't been mentioned very much is that this tent is very roomy for 3 people. It really is an honest 3 person tent. I attribute this to the great design that makes the walls nearly vertical. This gives a much more open area inside the tent, so, even though the actual square footage is on par with other 3 person tents, the usable space is 100% of that square footage and the headspace is incredible for a tent in this weight class.

This is the best 3 person tent that I have ever owned, seen, or used. The only thing that I would change about it is that little narrow panel of non-mesh fabric on the roof. There may have been a good reason for that to be placed there, but it would be nice for it to be mesh in order to complete the sleeping under the stars feeling.

Exactly as Bryan said. I just returned from a trip to the desert. We had very high winds a few days and when we came back to camp the group who had the Hubba returned to a sand box. It was a great tent though!!

All of the Hubbas will do just fine in 3 season winds. I do know first hand that if it is in the desert, then you should get ready for some sand to be in your tent. The mesh is so breathable!
