The Gait Efficiency System on MSR’s Lightning Axis Snowshoe is brand new for 2010, and frankly, once you try it, it might have you wondering how you ever used any other kind of snowshoe. In addition, the integrated, serrated 360 Traction Frame enhances traction and lateral stability on uneven and icy pitches, and the single-strap SpeedLock binding system lets you adjust your bindings with ease—even if you’re wearing thick gloves. And, thanks in part to the Modular Floatation Tail feature, you can feel free to take these sturdy snowshoes on a wide variety of snow conditions.

  • New Axis Gait Efficiency bilateral binding adjustment allows you to adjust your lateral foot position up to 8 degrees, which improves overall efficiency and neutralizes variances in natural foot positions (toe-in or toe-out) to ensure a parallel stride
  • Unlike traditional tubular-shaped snowshoe frames (which often slide on uneven terrain), MSR’s 360 Degree Traction Frame has integrated, serrated edges so that you can traverse icy slopes and navigate steep terrain with greater confidence
  • Slightly narrower frame (as compared to the men’s version) is ideal for women, those with a narrow gait, and lightweight backpackers looking to shed a few ounces
  • Modular Flotation Tail allows you to custom-tailor your footprint size to match trail conditions—attach it when expecting powder, and leave it off for hardpack
  • The Televator heel lift system reduces calf fatigue, conserves energy, and improves traction on the steeps—intuitive design engages in seconds with a simple flick of your pole
  • SpeedLock binding employs a single strap to save time and energy when fitting and removing snowshoes

Bottom Line: Setting a new standard in comfort and performance.

Bought a pair of Men's MSR's by mistake, but no mistake. I absolutely LOVE my MSR's. For a sport that is so affordable (free) to enjoy, you should really invest in the best equipment, and MSR's are definitely the best. Lightweight, sturdy (rugged!), easy off and on, and so comfortable. Do it...you know you want to :-)

These shoes are the best! The adjustable bindings are so cool even someone with a duck walk can wear them without the back of the shoes clanging together. Liked them so much I ordered a second pair for my daughter. Backcountry.com rocks too.

Great snowshoes

I've used several brands of snowshoes (Tubbs, Atlas, Katoohla), and these are by far the best I have ever owned. They are light, easy to fit, easy on/off, and easy to carry on your pack. I'm 5'6" 124 lbs - I bought the 22" version and they have done great in powder. A friend of mine had some Tubbs shoes, and the snow was balling up terrible on hers, but never on mine. The serrated edges provide superior traction on ice. They are a little pricey, but if you are a serious snowshoer, than these are the brand to get.
