Get deeper into the backcountry and be prepared for changing mountain conditions with MSR’s Evo Tour Snowshoes. These touring snowshoes come with an integrated, side-mounted traction system to improve lateral stability over icy, uneven ground. And whether you’re traveling over hardpack or powder, you can maximize your snowshoes’ float and maneuverability with the Modular Floatation Tail attachments.

  • Integrated, side-mounted Unibody Traction Rails grip ice and provide lateral (side-to-side) stability over uneven ground—aggressive tooth cut provides more traction than MSR’s standard Evo model
  • Pivot Crampon shares a rotating hinge with your binding to provide secure traction regardless of your foot position or the angle of terrain
  • SpeedLock bindings employ a single strap to save time and energy when fitting and removing snowshoes
  • Modular Flotation Tail (5 inch connector piece) allow you to custom-tailor your footprint size to match trail conditions—attach them when expecting powder, and leave them off for hardpack
  • The Televator heel lift system reduces calf fatigue, conserves energy, and improves traction when traveling uphill—intuitive design engages in seconds with a simple flick of your pole

They Just Don't Get Any Better

By:
December 26, 2010

MSR makes some of the best outdoor products available and the Evo Tours are no exception. I've used these on several trips this winter already in the Colorado mountains and they performed perfectly.

The traction is, as with MSR's other denali shoes, fantastic. No slipping - even on pure ice in parking lots and other similar places. The new binding system makes putting them on VERY fast (I was able to stomp them both on for the very first time in under 30 seconds - without taking off my gloves), while also keeping them attached to the foot as well as any other shoe I've ever worn. Great innovation.

Last of all, they're well constructed. I expect to have these for many years to come.

One thing to note is that if you weigh over 175-200 pounds (total weight - your weight, clothes, pack, etc.) and go out to deeper powder it's worthwhile to purchase the 6 in. flotation tails separately. When in powder, they really work well to keep you higher in the snow.

Not impressed with binding

By:
June 27, 2011

I'm a big fan of MSR snowshoes and when I needed a new pair I was interested to try this binding system. After using them for a full winter, I'm not impressed. If you use one pair of boots of the entire season then perhaps it will save you some time, but I don't think it is significant. If you are changing boots, it is a pain (switching from mountaineering boots to hiking boots). Once in, the bindings are secure and work as described. Overall these are high quality snowshoes, read about the bindings thoroughly and decide whether the advantages/disadvantages of this binding system is worthwhile for you. I will continue to use these and they will serve their purpose well. You can't beat the durability, traction, and weight combo of MSR snowshoes!

Hi looking for a pair of snowshoes. Looking for my first pair. I love MSR gear. Are these a good pair of snowshoes? I want a pair that will last for a long time.

Tom, first, I would hands down recommend the MSR snowshoes - they are super durable because they don't have many parts and the deck is the frame (unlike many other snowshoes where there is a frame that is somehow attached to a decking material and that attachment point is a usual failure point).

However, depending where you live/plan to go I'd recommend either the Tour or the Ascent:
Tour: flat areas and rolling terrain - they are aptly named the Tour.
Ascent: steep slopes, hiking, (their binding system is simpler and more stable and secure for steeper stuff). Hope this helps.

Wouldn't change a thing!

These are my first snow shoes, and I am very happy with them! The bindings are very easy to use, and feel very rugged. I was suprised how light these snow shoes are! I went hiking with a friend over the weekend, and her aluminum frame snow shoes snapped on our descent. It's worth it to spend the extra money- these things are awesome!

Yes, the straps are included.

It is there to provide just a bit more holding power for the foot. I would recommend not using it, but throwing it in your pack until it is needed (on rare occasions when the terrain is either extremely steep or unpredictable). After having used this binding on several occasions, and over difficult terrain, I'm very surprised at how secure the Speedlock binding is without using the strap. It's comfortable, the easiest binding I've ever used in getting my foot in and out, and extremely durable.

Awesome Sauce

By:
March 5, 2011

Been shoeing for about 10 years now and have owned shoes from all the major brands and without a doubt these shoes are the best going. I've had them on every day for the last 3 weeks all over Massachusetts on all kinds of snow. I'm anywhere from 160-185 with gear and have had no float issues at all, especially with the option of the tails.
Traction is amazing on these shoes. Ice, powder, ice/powder, crust, nothing but confidence. Great traversing inclines as well.
The bindings rock. They are the easiest shoes to get on and off while on the trail, hands down. I carry the middle straps in my pack in case things get sketchy. The televators are also among the easiest to get up and down.
If you're looking for a shoe that can do it all and get you home these are the ones.

I'm kind of wondering what the difference aside from binding

I'm kind of wondering what the difference aside from binding there is between these and the MSR Evo Ascents. I'm looking for something to do backcountry snowboarding, and some mountain hiking, so I'm wondering if this would serve that well, or if the evo ascent is really the right choice.

The bindings on these (Evo Tour) are just as capable as the Ascents - esepcially when using the third, optional strap. The benefit of the new strap system is that it is faster and easier to use.

These are the newer design from MSR. Unless you can find the Ascents at a much reduced price - or really want the other colors (the Ascents come in red), the Evo Tours are the way to go.

Slugs,
As you noted, the key difference is the binding. They also come in different colors and the ascents are 10g heavier. Besides that they have the same traction and construction. These shoes should serve your purposes well, but if you want my $.02 I say go with the more secure binding. If you intend to get serious use of out these things, then you definitely want you foot locked in as solidly as possible.
I hope this helps.

Fantastic! No more penguin waddle.

By:
January 11, 2011

I finally bit the bullet and replaced my more traditionally styled Tubbs snowshoes with these. They are amazing! Light, easy to put on and off, remarkable traction and much easier clearance when I walk. I'm less than 5'3" and it's hard to find a snow show that doesn't make me waddle like a penguin carrying an egg, even in the women's versions. What a clever design!

do these come with the Modular Flotation Tail, or does it need to be bought separate like the denali shoes?

As mentioned, the come separate - they cost about $40 and are a great way to extend the functionality of the shoe. I just purchased a set of these and also purchased the tails. They work great!

Yes, you will need to buy a flotation tails as an accessory. They are the Evo Tails and will add an additional 4 inches to the end of the snowshoe.
