Why We Like The Carbon Reflex 2 Tent

Constructed specifically for ultralight backpacking, the MSR Carbon Reflex 2 Tent features a zipper-free vestibule that minimizes unnecessary weight. The waterproof rainfly and bathtub-style floor are equipped with fully taped seams and reinforced stress points for maximum durability and protection in the face of unpleasant weather. A mesh canopy keeps the air flowing when it's warm and dry out. The Carbon Reflex 2 is furnished with two carbon-fiber poles, ten MSR needle stakes, guycords, and adjusters that make setting up a breeze. When combined with a tent footprint (not included), the Carbon Reflex 2's rainfly offers a Fast and Light setup option for even greater weight savings. So whether you're enduring a rainstorm of the century or surviving sauna-like humidity, the Carbon Reflex 2 is light as a feather and tough as a tarp.

Love it...but......

I backpack. This was a dream to carry, virtually invisible to carry. Second night out ,zipper malfunction. Fortunately I was able to pinch it tight and get it zipped. Climbed over each other the rest of the trip. Condensation was awful. 30 degree nights and 2 people equaled drips on face and damp down bags. The velcro was not ideal but held in 30mph winds. The fabric feels very delicate. Overall , as a long term and dedicated msr purchaser, I am not thrilled. This said, a few more trips, a zipper repair, and I may upgrade my opinion. This tent is for a dedicated ultralight packer who is polite and respectful with their gear. If you are not, go with a hubba. My old one is at least 10 yts old and going strong. I will still purchase msr as they stand by their gear and are always easy to deal with.

Faulty Design

The top short cross carbon fiber pole breaks systematically at crossing point. The breakage occurs after a few hours of having the tent set up, even with no wind or rain. I've contacted MSR for help after the first failure. They sent me an extra set of poles. Since then I had to replace one section every other time I mounted the tent. I have to bring extra sections when I plan to use the tent for more than one night. Fixes with aluminim hollow tube over the breaking point just results in another breaking occurring just out of the tube. I have now run out of extra sections. This is just an unreliable and costly piece of equipment.

Nice weight, so-so rainfly

My wife and I used this tent on a weekend in Arkansas and a 7 night trip in Grand Canyon NP. We zip our sleeping bags together and with that bit of space saving found the room adequate. I'm 5'11'' and when I sit up my head brushes the top. The biggest weakness of this tent is the rainfly. The vestibules are each closed with two metal hooks and a few pieces of velcro. I have not been able to figure out a way to close them without leaving large gaps through which wind and rain could pour in. I'm not saying it can't be closed securely but so far I haven't been able to do it. It takes careful positioning of the rainfly pegs to keep the fly from resting on the tent body. With this weakness I would not take this tent above treeline. I don't find the non-freestanding design to be a problem. Freestanding tents must be staked down or they'll go off on a trip without you.

Hate the Fly

Bought this spring, excited for the lighter version. Extremely packable and light. Easy tent body set up, although it is NOT freestanding (but was ok for me since no tent truly is fully freestanding). The fly is where my frustrations lie. When purchased it stuck to itself like saran wrap. It was horrible to get unstuck and would re-stick to itself. Once open and on the tent it was ok. But repacked and brought back out it did the same thing. Very frustrating in even a little breeze and wanting to escape mosquitoes! I also had an issue trying to unhook the bottom hook on the fly from inside the tent, I had to reach out and put my hands in the dirt to get to it. Plus the hook-Velcro-hook-Velcro left gaps in the fly, but I did not test it in rain to see if it would leak or not. Also there is a flap over the top of the fly opening that makes entry lower and a bit harder to get in/out. I returned the tent sadly because of the fly issues.

Great tent-weak poles

I've had this tent for sometime never had a problem until my last to camping trips . I lived (tested) two tents for 4 month 1st : MSR Carbon reflex 2. 2nd: traptent My MSR Carbon reflex 2 main pole broke and leaked...note:I've never seam seal until a few months ago. I used the repair tube to get me by(it worked). I'm planning a bike tour ,so I setup my MSR Carbon reflex 2 to make sure their wasn't any leaks...the main pole broke again in 2 places... I would recommend this tent if the poles was redone.
