Let your pup carry his own food, water, and treats in the Mountainsmith Dog Pack when you hit the trails. These well-fitting packs hold enough doggie grub for a full day of hiking, and are well balanced to carry just right. Soft padded straps and a well-vented top assure that your furry friend stays comfortable, and compression straps stabilize his load to keep him on his feet. Stash the leash in the top mesh pocket, and it'll be ready when you reach the trailhead. Hay, it has to happen sooner or later.

Bottom Line: If your dog likes backpacking, get him the Mountainsmith Dog Pack.

I have an Anatolian Shepherd and it is hard to find dog supplies large enough to fit him. This pack gives him room to spare. It is extremely well made -- he can carry our lunch, sunblock, bear spray, water, and his own poop bags. The dog loves having a job to do -- and this pack makes it possible.

@ Ian Provo. I ordered the Large mountiansmith dogpack for my 110 pound english mastiff and the strap closest to the rear of the dog doesn't seem to fit correctly. I see that you have a large dog and ordered the large pack also. Do you have the same problem with your dog and if you do how did you fix it? Thanks

Quality is good!

By:

The pack is of good quality. Good materials and easy to use. One thing I don't like is that the d-ring for the leach attachment is plastic. I took it off and attached a biner to it.

I have a 70lb catahoula mix with a deep chest much like a grey hound and I can't decide on medium or large. The medium NRS PFD I got for him fits awkwardly because of his deep chest... just wondering what you guys think...

I just ordered the large pack for my 110 pound english mastiff and the rear compression strap is tightened all the way and it still is not tightened around her waist. The ribcage compression strap and the chest strap fit well. I would probably go with the medium if I were you. I attached a picture of the rear compression strap for you. Good buying!

I am not an expect on breeds but I would recommend going with the large, it may give your dog more room and adjustment then the med.
I hope this helps!

best dog pack going

I've tried just about all the dog packs out there, and this is the one I've settled on. I love compression straps for balancing out the loads. If you have a big dog, the large pack is perfect. My dog carried 20lbs of food over 30 miles no problem.

Emma

By:
February 19, 2011

Emma (bull mastiff) loves her pack and carries her own water. I think she feels in charge when wearing it. She barely notices it is there until she goes to lie down. It is a good fit and the straps snug it up. When passing people on the trail while wearing the pack people say, "oh how cute". When not wearing the pack they say, "oh big dog".

Hey there, I'm wondering if this pack has compatible water

Hey there,
I'm wondering if this pack has compatible water bladders that store internally, similar to the Ruffwear palisades II pack?

I have been using 2 of the RWs for about 18 months and need to replace one of them that was returned a while back.

It doesn't have a water bladder storage like the Ruffwear packs. It does have a mesh pocket on one side that I use for water bottles. Or a beer for me :-)

Write your question here...Can I get some tips about how to strap

Write your question here...Can I get some tips about how to strap the pack to my Chesapeake Retriever, in particular, how tight should the straps be?; how far back should the forward strap under the chest be from his front legs. Anything would help. Thanks.

The straps should be "snug" but not restrict breathing; the forward strap should not interfere with the front legs but should be on the rib cage near the sternum. It may take a few tries to get the position where it is comfortable. Hope this helps!

Very pleased! Pack will hold more than your pup cares to haul around, compression straps work great for holding extra cargo. design and materials have been holding up well. Straps have a lot of adjustment.

Great pack for all dogs

By:
April 15, 2011

I bought a medium one for my 40 lb dog and a large one for my sister's Malamute 75 lb dog. The fit was excellent for both puppies and the Malamute definitely loved it whereas my Shepherd took some time getting used to it. I've used it 5 times and she has no trouble jumping around like a maniac with it on. The pack is easy to put on and stays level. I get many comments on her running around with it on!

Perfect pack for my dog!

By:
January 9, 2011

I have been looking for packs for my Mastiff/Lab mix for a long time! I finally found the perfect pack!! McKinley is 9 yrs old and has never worn a pack. First time she had it on, I loaded it with only about 3 lbs, she wore it for an hour and loved it! She is 90 lbs and I got a medium for her. The bags are perfect size to hold her water and bowl plus, there is a inside zip pocket perfect for keys or cell phone. I love the mesh pocket on the outside. I would totally reccomend this pack to anyone looking for a great pack for your dog. I am so excited to be able to take her on longer hikes now where she can carry her own stuff!

Great pack

By:
December 8, 2009

I have had this pack for 3 months and have logged at least 100 miles with my German Shorthaired Pointer. This is the only thing (and the bike rides) that keep her sane. She requires miles of exercise daily and the pack weight helps wear her out. Otherwise she just does laps around our 2 acre yard all day. We have been building her up with about 10% body weight. So far the only problem is that the felt lining on the straps sometimes allows the excess tails to come out. Not a big deal and I am not going to cut them off. Very well balanced pack.

My Berner loves it!

By:
May 26, 2010

I bought the large size for my 105lb Bernese Mountain Dog and he took to it like he had always had it! I thought that he would try to fight it while I put it on him and during the walk, but he seemed to like it. I put some cans in it to give it some weight and he seemed to be more calm on this walk than normal. Later we will try it with some wine, cheese and dog treats for a nice picnic!

awesome pack

By:
July 13, 2009

Got one for my dog, and he's put it through its paces. Probably over 20 hikes now with it, a couple being 3-4 day trips and the pack has held up great. Pack sits right in place on the dog without moving around, even when my dog starts jumping around and going into play mode.

Only thing that could be better is making this thing waterproof for the stream & river crossings, but some waterproof duct-tape on the bottom has done the trick for me so far.

Either way great pack. My dog gets excited just seeing me pull it out of the closet now.

too small to sit on back properly

By:
September 16, 2008

won't stay stable on her back, back piece needs to be broader. after reading others review I choose a small for my 50 pound lab/german shepherd mix and I am not as happy with it as I was with the medium for my other two dogs

great pack

By:
September 16, 2008

pack is ergonomic, has "saddle" bags that are on the sides, so that the supplies are on the sides and not right on top of his back. I bought a cheaper pack for $20 and returned it as soon as I saw how it sat on his back. This pack was twice as much but twice as worth it.
