The Mountainsmith Auspex Backpack is a large pack for alpine users who demand lightweight construction without sacrificing comfort or features. The Auspex is part of Mountainsmith's Mountainlight series—a unique breed of packs that weighs two to three pounds less than most packs with comparable features, while giving up nothing in durability. Their Dimension Polyant fabric has greater tear strength and a higher resistance to abrasion, water, and UV degradation than 500 denier Cordura! Keeping you comfy and cool is a range of goodies, from a cooling spinal chimney design in the back padding to a custom-fit waistbelt with a woven, moisture-wicking stretch fabric against the body. Twin aluminum stays distribute the weight evenly. The Auspex is a water hog. It's equipped with a hydration reservoir pocket with a shingled tube port (so rain can't find it's way inside your pack) as well as two large mesh water bottle pockets. Dual daisy chains and a quick-store bungee help you attach anything you can think of to the Auspex. Ice axe loops and tool cuffs make this pack a rock star for winter alpine ascents.

Bottom Line: Shave pounds, not functionality.

Auspex Pack

By:

The pack is only decent in comparison to the Arcteryx Bora 80 that I used to have. I bought the Auspex because of the wide hip belt, which gives the pack more of a grip on my waist than the Bora 80 did. In that aspect the pack is great, but the lid doesn't seem to secure as well over the opening of the pack, and the lid's zipper is placed a little too low if you like to get things out while hiking and without taking the pack off. The nylon webbing likes to fray at the ends, I had to re-melt them myself. The side pockets are large enough to fit 1L Nalgenes in them but are secured only by elastic bands, not so good if you need to squeeze through tight places. The VX 21 stuff is nice, it seems like it could hold up to lots of abrasion, but it's only used in the yellow exterior panel, the rest just seems to be regular nylon. All in all, it's still a decent pack that’s nice and slim, and if you like more pressure on you hips rather than your tail bone, this is a good pack for you.
