There's plenty of good trail food out there, but this just might be the best. Add boiling water to the bag, let it sit for a few minutes, and you have a perfectly portioned delicious meal. I'll carry a stove & fuel on a day hike just so I can eat this Chili Mac for lunch. For maximum value, bring hot sauce.

This is my favorite Mountain House meal. I'm a huge fan of Chili Mac and I love beef! I've tried some other flavors but this one is the best I think :)

This meal was one of the better freeze dried options that I've tried. I would suggest letting it sit a little longer than the suggested time so soften the noodles and make the meat less chewy. All in all pretty good.

Lets face it, dirt bag gourmet food isn't going to come from a freeze dried packet. That being said, Mountain House does a pretty good job where they can. Good taste and texture for what it is. My second favorite MH behind the lasagna.

They're all good.

They taste good, they mix pretty easily and they're easy to prepare. Can't go wrong.
Great variety, good mix of salt, carbs, calories, etc.

Like other reviews say, your standards for food quality in the backcountry aren't very high. That being said, the Mountain House meals exceed my expectations every time. For space, weight, taste and overall convenience they're perfect...and way better than rationing out noodles from a bag.

We're talking about freeze dried food here so I'm not going to be using adjectives like "fantastic" or "awesome" but I can say with confidence that this is the best freeze dried food I've ever had and the Chili Mac is one of Mountain House best. I agree with the reviewer below that talks about using a couple ounces less than the instructions call for. I do most of my backpacking solo and I've tried everything from tuna to oatmeal to top ramen and freeze dried. What I've settled on is a mix of all the above with 60% to 70% of my calories coming from freeze dried food as you can't beat the light weight.

Bought one of these and tested it out last night. Absolutely fantastic!! I have a few more that I am taking camping with me next weekend. Hopefully the girlfriend will like them as much as I do!

Delicious for a freeze-dried entree! I'm a foodie, which makes this a very guilty pleasure for me, but I absolutely love the chili mac. Lightweight, quick to prepare, and easy to dispose of when you're leavin' no trace!

Buy, eat, and savor in the beautiful setting of your choice! No sharing with bears though!

This is without a doubt, the only lunch and dinner meal I take with me when I go hiking or camping. Here in the Northwest it's great to have a warm meal on those cold days and this hits the spot. It fills you up well and keeps you going. It's nice a compact too so it fits in a small day pack easily.

Read lots of reviews stating this was one of Mountain House's better choices and purchased one to test as a result. I was skeptical, though, as I'm a fairly picky eater and don't like odd food mixtures.

Went out on a 3-mile hike with the family recently and ate this for lunch with the wife.

It turned out surprisingly well! The texture, taste combinations, etc. were great. And, it didn't cause any digestion problems on the remainder of the hike. I'll definitely be purchasing again!

Tried this last night in our exploits to find the best tasting, long term storage/camping food we can find. I was not disappointed! Once again, easy to make. The macaroni was came out perfect and the chili/beef was superb. This beats Hormel and other canned chili's by far. As a matter of fact, we going to eat down our supply of those and replace them with these. Plus, there is the added bonus of weight during backpacking and size for storage. These are very light, especially in the pro-pack. Another winner in our books! It was so good that my three year old thought that I made it. Of course, I told her I did. ;-D

This is the best of the Mountain House line IMO. I don't add as much water as they recommend, about 2 ounces less, you can always add more if needed. This one serving container provides 26 grams of protein and about 500 calories.

It's a good source of carbs and protein, and tastes good to boot.

Had read alot about the Mountain House products and actually found these at a local supermarket and gave the Chili Mac w/ Beef a try. For a meal that you just add boiling water to these are awesome. The chili flavor was bold and the mac and beef cooked up nicely. I did use less water then advised (maybe 1 3/4 cup for the 2 serving size) and it came out perfect, no crunchies! I will most def be ordering a few from Backcountry for my next trip.
