Mountain Hardwear Women's Winter Wanderer Pants are one of the most comfortable pair of hiking pants you can find. A wide, low-profile waistband, a loose cut, and stretchy fabric give this durable pant an extra comfy fit. Reaching those impossible foot holds and mantling boulders becomes as easy as pie due to full-length gussets along the Winter Wanderer's inseam. If you're scrambling through streams in your wanderings, cinch up the drawcord cuffs.
Bottom Line: Wander through the seasons in the Mountain Hardwear Winter Wanderer's Pants.
I like these pants, but am returning them because they are huge. I am 5'8" 140 lbs and I usually wear a ten in tech pants. There is a review that says, 5'8" 135 lbs size 8 fit perfectly. So, I assumed I would be a ten as usual. Nope. I almost held onto them because they would be very versatile. Every time I went to wear them, I felt uncomfortable with how loose they were and couldn't bring myself to wear them. Oh, well. I wish BC had them in 8's, and now they are on sale.
I bought these to do some winter hiking and snowshoeing. They fit extremely well and are very flexible for outdoor activities. They kept me dry in the snow and rain. I wear a pair of thermal underpants for added warmth. Definately worth the money.

Hiked in them,10"snow on ridgeline, slept in them,15F. Comfortable, warm(had wool long johns on too), good length, lots of flexibility, great pockets. Shed snow very well without gaiters, although snow was dry and fluffy - wet and sticky might be a different story.
These are super comfy, stretchy, and rugged. I had a really hard time finding a heavier duty hiking pant that I liked (and wasn't cotton based), and as it turned out these were exactly what I was looking for. I love the lined pockets - sort of wish the whole pant was lined with that material! I was a bit concerned about fit when reading through reviews, but they are perfect. I'm 5'9" and 140 and the size 8 was just right in fit and length and I can even comfortably wear base layers underneath. Water beads up nicely on the shell. Also important - easy wash & dry! My only complaint is that they are noisy. They swish when you walk. Nevertheless, I plan to order another pair! Too bad they don't have more colors.
I own these pants and they rock. Durable material, good for heat or cold, and look nice also. I admit I bought them for looks at first but I've mostly worn them in the mountains -summer couloir skiing or climbing granite peak. I've used them in the fall and in the summer, and unlike my prana climbing pants, aren't going to abraid easily-- they're sort of thick but also hang loosely and don't cling to your skin (that's why they work in the mountains in August, too). They definitely aren't made for a tall person- I am 5'4" and the length is absolutely perfect. I believe I have a size 8, and I usually wear a size 8 or 6, but usually an 8 because of my slightly larger behind. They look great but don't hang down to get wet when I have my boots in and cross some small gravelly streams.
I bought them for snowshoeing and hiking but I am a cross country skier also. They should work very well for you. I have worn them several times and found them to be comfortable/flexible enough for snow activities. They repel water very well also.
These are extremely comfortable! I use them for biking to work in the Iowa winter, with a pair of long underwear underneath. No problems with them so far. Highly recommended. I have a bigger bottom and thighs with a smaller waist, and these fit very well.
Many of the other comments seem to revolve around sizing, so I'll toss my two cents worth in. I'm 5'2" and weigh 115 and these fit me perfectly. They'd probably be just as good if I was a couple of inches taller, but I don't think they'd work for women who are average height (e.g. 5'7" and above). The fabric seems durable. There are plenty of pockets and the drawstring bottoms are one of Mountain Hardwear's nicer features. I'd definitely buy these again.
I have other Mountain Hardwear pants in size 10, so I ordered these in 10 and they were HUGE. I would probably wear a 6 in these pants. That being said, they winter weight fabric is great, the pants are very well-constructed, and have plenty of technical features that aren't extremely obvious. For technical pants, these definitely have a stylish side.
Bought these too big, 10's, as I usually run to higher sizes in these types of brands. If they're too big the pockets stick out strangely but I liked them anyways and sent them back for an 8 which makes them a really flattering pair of pants. I'm 5'7", about 135 and this was perfect for me. Perfect for snowshoeing in Wisconsin winters with a pair of tights underneath. Love them!
I bought these in black and brown. The fabric of the pants is nice. It's a durable fabric, but it's not fleeced lined, but has some other textured lining so it's not super thick and can be worn for a spring or fall day and not just winter. Basically, they aren't snowboarding pants. The brown pair fit great, but the black pair fit a little weird. I think they cut the the pants a little off because the black ones were a little bigger and the pockets stuck out a little and did not lay flat like the brown ones. I've ordered a different 2 pair of hiking pants from this company and found a similar issue with the cuts being slightly off for one pair (in this case I bought a short length and one pair was an inch shorter than the other). I guess it's like jeans....same style but no two cuts are exactly the same.
Otherwise, these are great pants. Water resistant and tough and they look good.
I figured I would not have the opportunity to use these until September, but even in the heat they proved to be great! I thought I would end up being pretty warm all day if I wore them in the 80 degree weather hiking. After all the horrible rain and thunder we trekked through I am so glad that I decided to wear these on that day. Not only was I not hot before the rain, my legs were so comfortable even during. They kept me dry, moved freely, and are extremely durable when brushed strongly against or smashed against rock. I think I will wear these a lot more than I had originally intended to. The inseam seemed a little short to me at first even though I'm only 5'2, but it didn't seem to matter much with boots on.
I originally purchased a size 10 because that is what I normally wear in Mountain Hardware and they were too big, returned for an 8. These were very huge in the hip and thigh area for some reason. Love the fabric and cut though!!
I only wish these pants were available in a petite. I had to have them shortened and lost the drawstring hem, but I still love them. Wear them for all kinds of city stuff, hiking and what not.
I really wanted these to work!! Had to return them. The fabric was great, but the length way too long for an athletic pant, for a short person . The wide-cut bottoms made rolling or otherwise improvising impossible. I thought about having them shortened, but that seemed excessive given the cost of the pants. Manufacturers, please take note: Short, petite women need technical clothing, too!!!
I bought these pants for walking/hiking in the winter. On a very cold day, I wear a pair of tights underneath and stay toasty warm. I usually wear a size 4, but in tech. clothing a size 6. I ordered the 6 & they fit well through the waist & just a hair big through the pocket and hip. They are very, very comfortable BUT they are too short - I'm 5'7". I am always confused as to why these companies don't order different lengths and/or only make lengths longer as the size goes up. Thinner people can be tall and vice versa. I want to lengthen the pants, but I don't want to lose the drawstring bottom because I did use it when walking through snow or when it was super cold to keep the cold out.
I really love these pants-- have worn them climbing and snow-shoeing. However, when worn on long hikes with a pack on the cinch system for the waist was very uncomfortable. I'd prefer a drawcord like in the ellinor capris and many other styles. I first the cord was cool because it was so low-profile and non-bulky. But it's like having a 2mm cord wrapped and cinched around your waist for eight hours of hiking which is exactly what happened.
These are great pants, they're not only comfortable and warm but they look really nice too! II wore them in windchills of single digits, although I recommend you wear tights under them, but they'll work in the coldest weather Michigan can throw at you!
I just got these pants in the mail today. I ordered a size 4 and when I tried them on they were pretty tight in the waist. They seem like they have a warm material, but for my purposes I will want to wear a lightweight thermal under them as well. I ordered the same size 4 in a Northface brand of hiking pants and those fit really well. I think these pants run a little more fitted than most, so keep that in mind when ordering them. Other than that they seem like they will be perfect for winter outdoor activities. The rest of the pant, besides the waist, is really stretchy and easy to move in. I am going to exchange these for the next size up and then can't wait to try them out!
I purchased these pants for a 4 day hiking trip in the Enchantments in the North Cascades the first part of October. I wore them the entire time. Able to have two layers on underneath in the night for warmth and they were not tight. In the day during hiking or rock scrambling, I did not wear any additional layers and they were very comfortable--not loose at all. They are quite durable; no snags, no rips despite what I put them through. I look forward to wearing them snow-shoeing and hiking this winter. I wear a 8 and a size 8 in these pants fit me perfectly.
I could live in these pants! Being a petite 5'4'' 115 lbs, I bought the size four. I do not like my pants to be tight, so I am glad I sized up from my usual size two. This size allows for me to either wear them on their own, or put a base layer under them for really cold temperatures. They have a looser fit that is a straight leg throughout the pants. I did not think I would like the wide look, but this is actually a nice touch that makes them classy enough to wear out. I have the brown color which is a nice rich milk chocolate, not shiny at all like they seem in the picture. The material is durable and thick, yet not oppressive. They have a nice stretch, which makes rock scrambling a breeze. These pants also have a great bungy at the bottom which keeps unwanted gunk from getting in, yet will not replace the use of gaiters for messy weather. Overall, a great pant. I got them on cheap and steep, so did not pay full price, yet I would certainly pay full price for these great pants! Lastly, my husband says they make my butt look great....always a plus!
I love these pants. They are my "I'm a geologist but a well-clad feminine geologist" pants. The fit is quite flattering, although I normally wear a size 4 but got these pants in a 6, and the pants fit perfectly. The fleece lined pockets are a definite plus.
Great stretch, fit is very modern with slight bootleg flare that flatters the figure. I am 5'8" 160 lbs with smaller hips than average, I usually wear size 8 comfortably, so I bought size 8. The pants are just a bit tight in the butt, but that's ok because of the stretch. However, if you have a fuller bottom, I would suggest ordering up a size. Also, as most of the reviews suggested, the inseam is a tad bit on the short side- not to the point of looking ridiculous, but these pants don't fit like suit pants, they are not floor length probably because you don't want your pants dragging on the ground when you hike. Overall, I'm very please with the quality and the price!!!
My husband and I each bought a pair of these pants for a winter backpacking trip to Europe. We loved the heavy fabric, which helped keep us warm despite the temperatures (below freezing!) as we walked the streets of Prague and Vienna. I really like the cut, and found it quite flattering; the black made the pants look nice enough that I didn't feel out of place touring the cathedrals and castles. If you are tall, these pants will probably be too short; I'm a petite 5'3", and they're perfect.
I wear between a size 4 and 6 in most lines of sportswear. The black size 6 pant waist was tight to the point of pulling the metal hook closure almost off the waistband; but the rise and the hip fit well. The black size 8 (oh, yes, I ordered that too, as I liked so many of the features in this pant) looked like jodhpurs in the hip and the pockets gaped in a most defective manner. Mtn Hdwr needs to clean up the defective sizing and I certainly hope Backcountry.com can send them back.
Got a pair of these last winter and the fit/cut is very flattering. Comfortable heavy, stretchy fabric. Love the boot cut for wearing around town but obviously gaiters are needed to supplement the drawstring at the ankles. Not quite warm enough without another layer underneath in the super cold, but perfect for snowshoeing and other aerobic outdoor winter activities.
These pants fit great (at least for this 5'6" slim build of mine) and are extremely comfortable. The side zipper pocket works great for a cell phone. I wear these pants in both colors to work almost everyday-- like a uniform. They are extremely warm when outside and yet are also just right while indoors.
I also throw on a nice top and wear these out to party in the evening. VERY VERSATILE!!!
I love these pants. I'm about 5'7", with a pear shape. The pants fit great and are very flattering. I usually have issues with pants that fit well around the behind and big at the waist, but these pants have a draw string that make them nice and snug at the waist. They're a great length and move well with your body. I'd definitely recommend these pants, especially to curvy women like me.
I bought these pants because of the reviews. They're good strong winter pants for the larger boned woman. Definitely size down on these pants if you're a petite. They cut them large and the pockets on the sides stick out if you have hips. They require a slim-hipped figure no matter the size. I ordered a 12 and could easily fit into a 10. Funny, but whenever I order a 10 in other brands, they're too small! I give up.
I had bought these 'same' pants last year & was thrilled to see them offered in a different color this year. The fit seemed a bit fuller & the material thinner in this pair. What happened? I have worn them a bit & I am OK with the color, but WHY change what was SO good. skibihi
I haven't actually used these pants yet because it hasn't gotten cold enough since ordering them. But they seem great. They fit really well--very flattering for sure. They are stretchy and easy to move in. They seem warm. They seem like perfect pants for winter, for walking/hiking, hanging out outdoors, etc.
I had been looking for pants that fit a smaller frame for a while before discovering Mountain Hardwear, and they are great! (I am 5'1" and 108 lbs, and the size 2 fits.) The internal drawcord on this style is especially nice, and they are a rugged, non-wrinkly fabric that looks reasonably good even after a week of camping. I'm ordering another pair!
Very comfortable. Modern cut (NOT high waisted and NO belt needed) Stretchy fabric moves with you. Great length. I'm 5' 9 1/2" bought a size 12 and they are perfect. Perfect for Canadian winters!
This is my third pair of Mountain Hardwear pants, and the fit and feel has not failed me yet. I love the wide waist band and the internal single bungie string adjustment. These will get a lot of use this winter.
unexpectedly with rain and hail on a hanging belay. These pants just held up great! My legs stayed warm and the cinch on the legs helped to keep the draft from crawling up and freezing me from the inside out. I generally wear an XS for Patagonia or Prana - but for Mountain Hardwear clothes, it goes up to S or size 4.
these pants held up great on a snowy backpacking trip...they are a little long (I am only 5'3'') but they are lighter and easier to wear than actual soft-shell pants, and you still get the waterproofness. the legs are wide and fit layers underneath easily.
they do stretch out after a couple days' wear, but go back to the original shape after a good washing.
I purchased these pants for SAR during cooler conditions. PROs: I found them to be VERY comfortable in that they were cut well in the seat & thigh areas, are allover stretchy & snuggy. The exterior does not snag & does not attract or collect burrs. CONs: no belt loops, boot cut bottoms are a bit too big and they are cut very short in the inseam. (good thing we wear gaiters). I WOULD buy another pair none the less.
I looked all over for these pants and when I found them on your website the experience was wonderful. From the purchase to delivery was very professional and friendly. Also, the pants are great and I would recommend them for not only hiking but just walking around in the cold weather. I will surely buy all my rugged wear from you.
I have several pairs of this pant, and am bummed that Mountain Hardwear discontinued it. It was the best all-around pant there was out there. Thank goodness this site has some left!! I've used this pant for multiple sports...hiking, rock climbing, trekking, etc. It can handle it all. Durable fabric that is thicker than most but yet it moves with you as it has a stretch component, so you don't feel restricted at all reaching for that toe hold, etc. Kept me warm on winter climbs and to top it all off, has a very flattering fit. This is the best pant ever!
