Vented Sun Hat

The Mountain Hardwear Vented Sun Hat is a mandatory piece of headwear for hot, sunny environments like the desert or the line for ice cream. Tasty treats or nasty heat notwithstanding, the Vented Sun Hat uses mesh vents for breathability and a Coolmax headband to keep the sweat off your brow. A darker underside to the brim won't reflect glare back into your eyes. Mountain Hardwear rates this hat at a UPF of 50. The full-coverage brim is 3.5 inches across the front and 4 inches across the back, so the sun won't fry your neck either.

Bottom Line: Bask without burning in the Mountain Hardwear Vented Sun Hat.

from the summit of Mount Whitney to the depths of the Grand Canyon

I have this in the 2006 version, and it is the best hiking hat ever. This thing has been with me on the summit of Mount Whitney and the depths of the Grand Canyon. When and if it finally dies, I will just have to hope that the new model can fill its massive shoes.

Best sun-hat I've found

By:
June 13, 2007

This is my second Mountain Hardwear hat. It is my favorite of those I have tried so far. I've tried the O.R. hat and did not like it because it is not vented and has a liner that locks in the heat. The HardWear hat is well-vented, lightweight, and has a nice wide, crushable brim. The crushable brim, which can easily be pushed aside, is a big plus for the activities I engage in. Perfect for protection from the stifling heat and sunshine. It is worth the hefty price.

I had the same experience with the OR Helios hat; it was not vented well enough and the sweatband did not seem to absorb enough sweat. The Columbia Bora Bora Booney, while it has a strip of mesh, still did not vent as well as the giant mesh side panels on the Mountain Hardwear hat, and the sweatband did not perform nearly as well, I had sweat running down into my eyes and dripping onto my shades. This is my favorite hiking hat.

Father's Day gift

By:
July 31, 2007

After my dad took a liking to a souvenir wide-brimmed hat that I had snagged while on vacation in Southern California, I thought I'd get him one of his own for Father's day. His favorite part was that mine was vented for airflow, and how beneficial that was for when you are out in the sun and trying to stay cool.
I've always been a fan of Mountain Hardwear, and know that dad loves quality that lasts. He called the day it arrived and one of the first he said was that the color was cool for the weather and he liked the feel and the fit. thanks

durability issues...

By:
August 5, 2008

I bought this hat and have had a mixed experience. It is lightweight and cool and blocks sun well. However, after only a few weeks of occasional use, both of the side snaps busted apart and the plastic clip on the headband cord flew off. It is still functional, but I would expect better durability from Mountain Hardware.

Nice x2

By:
September 18, 2008

I love this hat. Fits into my backpack flat, and goes to shape quickly without much effort when I put it on. I say, "Nice x2" because I brought this hat to a graduate seminar at a University and left it at my table when I got up from lunch. When I came back for it 2 minutes later it was snatched. It was not turned into lost in found, so after several days I ordered another one and it arrived promptly from Back Country. Thanks. Anyway, the second has served me well in sun and light rain. It's in the car all the time now for when I hit the beach. Awesome product. Sorry the other reviewer's snaps broke. I leave mine unsnapped, so haven't had to face that issue.

Used the hat climbing Mt. Adams. Stayed dry and worked great in the sun.

Dad likes it - his thoughts:

By:

I like the material and the lightness; the waterproofing is good; the headband is a bit snug for someone with my head circumference (but I use it anyway). For desert living, it's useful for walking, especially walking early/late (the only times you can walk comfortably), but since the sun is at an angle it would be better to have broader brim!

Accidentally bought the Men's version, but I don't care!

I LOVE this hat! It was a lifesaver on a trip to Disneyworld. I could wear it while walking then put it down on my back during the rides, and I never worried about losing it. It kept my head and face shaded well, and the big brim meant I didn't have any sneaky sunburn on the back of my neck or ears if I forgot the sunscreen.

My sister loved the hat so much too that she almost stole it from me, but it wasn't going anywhere!!

Cool & Lightweight - wish the price was too

By:

The hat works great. It's lightweight, blocks the sun, and keeps my head nice & cool with the vents. Drawbacks are: the snaps that fold the brim on the sides started to corrode after 1 day at the beach and the large size is a little snug for my big head. Usually wear a size 7 3/4. If you're lucky and have a smaller head, this hat has a draw cord that cinches the hat tighter (in addition to the chin strap) if needed. I paid full price for this hat, would have been happier to get it on sale, but still overall, I give it a thumbs up.
