There’s a reason Mountain Hardwear named this Men’s Pant the Typhoon—the ultralight Gore-Tex Paclite material guarantees dry legs if you get smacked by a warm-water-bred Asian-Pacific storm, or you’re snorkeling in chest-deep Sierra snow. Highly breathable, yet totally waterproof, this pant packs down to a near unnoticeable size, which makes is ideal to take anywhere. On the trail, the nine-inch ankle zips allow you to pull the Typhoon Pant right over your hiking boots to quickly fend off sudden downpours. Mountain Hardwear made sure this pant offers plenty of breathability, so when you add a baselayer for warmth you won’t have to sacrifice comfort on rigorous climbs.
Bottom Line: From cool downpours to cold winter storms, the Typhoon is the answer.
So I bought both the Typhoon jacket and pants from MH. Both are made with Paclite and fully taped seams backed by MH's reputation. The construction is bomber! That being said, the cut on the pants seems interesting. I normally wear a 36-38 waist depending on the brand (38 in Dickies'). Im 6ft 3in and 225 lbs. The pants are generously cut elsewhere but the waist seems very small for a 40-42 waist size according to the size chart. I bought one size up in both the jacket and pants for layering purposes. The jacket provides ample room, range of motion and length to layer an Icebreakers Bodyfit 200 Crew baselayer, a Patagonia R1 midlayer and Patagonia Eco Puff jacket underneath. The pants BARELY provide enough room to layer an Icebreakers Bodyfit 200 pant and Patagonia Simple Guide pant underneath due to the waist. It barely fits. Additionally, my size 13 Salomon 4D quest boots barely fit through the unzipped leg opening. Anything larger, such as mountaineering boots, wouldn't fit. This is my first purchase of MH outerwear so maybe this is standard. Other than the waist, the cut is fantastic. I'm debating returning the XL pants for the XXL or looking for another pair altogether. If the zippered leg openings were 4 in higher and the waist was more accurately sized, 5 stars.
I'm planning to buy these pants, but not sure what size to get without trying them on. I have a 31 waist, with a 30" inseam when I measured myself.
Looking at their website they have short/regular/long inseam options for each size. I've also read they fit a little small I want to be able to wear long underwear and a light pair of quick-dry pants underneath. What size and inseam should I get?
Is it possible to get these on without taking your hiking boots off? (boots, not shoes)
I would get the Small/Reg. I normally use 31-32" inseam and bought the mediums. They're way big, I can fit a couple of expedition weight down pants underneath so they're too big for me, I basicly bought them for throwing over softshells so i wanted them kind of roomy, not this roomy tho. I'd upload a picture but I'm at work.
Jamie. I would get the medium/reg in these pants. I think you find them large enough to get clothing underneath and as far as getting boots off is concerned... the zip goes up to the knee. So, depending on the boots I don't think it would be an issue to get the pants on and off with boots on. Hope this info helps!
I am a 33" waist & size M/M reg - fits perfectly! Super light & small. Actually the short boot zips don't bother me as I always take my boots off. Perhaps a small pocket would add value/versatility to this item - although I don't think its essential.

These pants fit me like a glove with a pair of fleece pants under. They're light as a feather, waterproof and breath very well. My only knock on this product is that my big-ass feet don't fit through the short zip area with my hiking boots on. I'm happy with these pants.
Light and dry. I am not sure about the typhoon part yet, but I just got back from 7 days of mountaineering in Antarctica. Two layers underneath kept me warm, these kept me dry, inside and out. They really do keep it all out and the breathability kept me dry inside as well. Light enough to carry all the time.
These pants are made with Gore Paclite. They are guaranteed waterproof by GoreTex. With that said, they will handle a downpour in SE Alaska just fine... good luck!
Excellent construction pairing lightness of weight and durability. I am 5' 11" and weigh in at 170 to 175 pound with a 32 to 33" waist. I found the size medium on the smaller size and was swimming in the large. A great pant just not made for me.
I guess these pants are made for incredibly slim young jocks with long legs. With a 33" waist I always get medium, but with these I had to try a large which means the legs are too long, but even a large seemed a bit tight for my butt, so finally I returned them. But if they fit you, they're wonderfully light for what they do.I'd give it 5 stars except for a rather serious flaw: the leg zips don't go high enough to comfortably take these pants on and off with boots on. With crampons, forget it. I wear only size 9, and I can barely get my boots through them. Probably not good winter pants unless you never plan to take them off.
these pants are great. they are really light for your pack and they do a great job at keeping you dry. they breathe well so you don't soak yourself with sweat. ive been in bomber weather and these always keep me dry.
Being 6'4" 200lbs with a 33in waist often has me getting my outdoor gear altered to fit properly. When my Typhoon pants showed up and I tried them on I was blown away by how perfectly they fit using the simple cinch waste strap. I just got back from Kilimanjaro and it rained every day of our trek. These pants handled the rain and mud without any trouble. The only recommendation I'd have is to run the zipper a little higher up the leg to accommodate us guys with 12+ boots.
Sizing: I'm pretty average size, 5'10", 165, usually wear a 32x30 jeans. I bought these in a medium and they fit perfectly.
Weight: weighs nothing. Stuff this with your paclite rain jacket in the front of your pack and you are impervious to the elements. Of note, one way they are able to keep the weight down is by eliminating pockets and side zippers...these pants do not have these.
Durability: Got them on a Wednesday, wore them camping Thurs-Sun and it rained every day. Didn't take them off once, and didn't get wet once. Just as you would expect, the Goretex is weatherproof. Kevlar reinforcements on the ankles are a nice touch, as is the ability to tighten the pant cuffs if it's buggy outside.
Overall, highly recommended. They will keep you dry and you won't notice when they're in your pack. Can be worn alone, or as I did once, over a pair of ski tights because it was cold. If you get sweaty on the inside of the pants, just flip them inside out and rub a paper towel on them, or dunk them in a river or lake and hang them from a tree so the water drips out. Great for ultralighters.
I was looking for something with long side zips and was disappointed when these showed up only to zip up to the calf. No way to get a boot through the legs. Pants are probably fine if that's not what you're looking for, but that was my main criteria for buying them.
