The Mountain Hardwear Men's Transition Tights use Windstopper Soft Shell fabric to keep you comfortable while you hike, bike, or cross country ski. For cold-weather aerobic activities, these flexible, breathable tights block wind chill without overheating you. Mountain Hardwear constructed these ultralight pants with a stretch inseam gusset so you can run and make turns with ninja-like agility. The fabric's smooth face also resists water and snow, so don't hesitate to take these softshells to your favorite Nordic loop. Wear the Transition tights as a mid-layer for extra insulation on a backcountry ski trip—their performance fit and welded construction provides smooth layering with no pressure points.

Bottom Line: Keep harsh winds out of your aerobic equation with the Mountain Hardwear Transition Pants.

An acquired fit

By:
January 27, 2009

When I first tried on these pants, I wasn't excited at how they fit. They were a little long in the leg and it seemed like you had to hike up the waist for the proper fit. I decided to give them a try anyway and am now very satisfied with the results. I pulled up the waist to the normal height and took them on a test run. They did not ride up and I had no problems with the fit during the run. They are perfect as an outer layer for high output pursuits in cold weather or as a base layer.

Warm & light - 5 star potential w/ a few minor changes

By:
November 18, 2008

I purchased a size Large (I am 5'-11" & 190 lbs) and have used them this fall several times for bike riding and roller-skiing. The close fit at the cuff is great for bike riding. The fabric is great for these activities in cold/windy/wet weather (the taped seams are a plus also).

The fit is long between the crotch and waist for me also. However, by folding the waist band down 1 time the fit is about right. This allows me to wear the waist where I normally would while putting the crotch in the right spot also.

When first trying them on, the fabric feels a little confining (not quite stretchy enough), but this is not noticeable during exercise. I don't know if the fabric breaks in or if I've just gotten used to it. Anyway, the "lack of stretch" is no longer annoying.

These tights are extremely light and warm for a minimum amount of bulk (packed or worn). Suggested improvements: (1) Improve the fit, (2) add ankle zips so they can be pulled on without taking your shoes/boots off, and (3) add a small key pocket.

windproof and functional

By:
November 21, 2008

I purchased a size large and have used them primarily for running frequently over the last month or so. However, plan to soon try them with some aerobic winter sports as well. The windproof aspect helps them keep my legs warm, and yet the material is very light and non-binding. Really have no complaints, but would concur with Rick's assessment if the manufacturer decided to try and improve them: add ankle zips and a small pocket, perhaps zippered or with velcro.

Not much thought put into the fit

By:
November 13, 2008

I was excited to get these, but after trying them on, the excitement faded quickly. The crotch hangs down too low. Normally thats fine with me, but I wanted these for trail running and mtb'ing. If I pulled them up so the crotch was in the right spot (i.e. I could move my legs without resistance from the pants) the waist band was up to the bottom of my ribcage...I'm not 80 yet!!! Wish I could comment on the performance of these, but I sent them back as they were just not going to work for me. Instead I picked up a pair of the Gore Windstopper cycling tights (unpadded) and those are a 10x better fit.

Worth my money

By:
January 4, 2009

I am 5'9" and 140 lbs, 30" waist and a 31" inseam, a narrow frame. The size small fit me okay; the length was great and the fit was very fitted without feeling like a sausage. On my legs there were gaps between my skin and the tights allowing good movement. The waist did land a little high, an inch below my belly button but as I'm wearing these underneath jeans or other sports pants this was fine for me as I like the extra coverage. I intended to use these as undergarments while motorcycling but have worn them in 10 degree F weather and they provide an excellent base layer for any activity (even snowboarding). If I lose these tights or destroy them in the wash I'll be back for a replacement.

Great pants for running here in SE MI (25 - 40 degree weather). The only drawback is there isn't a pouch to hold a house key.

great for running and biking

By:
November 21, 2008

I have worn mine for bicycling and running in 25 degree weather and have remained quite comfortable. I am 6" tall and purchased the large. They are a little long, but that's ok since I prefer them to be pulled up a little high for cycling. They are very slightly binding when running hard, but not terrible. I think they are ideal for cycling and will work descent for running as well. Would prefer ankle zips as well
