Weighing less than a pound, the Mountain Hardwear Men's Thermostatic Hooded Insulated Jacket brings the warmth without the weight on your backpacking adventures. Its durable nylon ripstop shell won't tear up when you encounter branches and sharp rocks on the trail. The 60g Thermic Micro insulation keeps you nice and toasty when you hike in fall and spring, and you can wear this as a mid-layer during your ski adventures in wintertime. It's so compressible that you can stow it in its own pocket and pack it up without sacrificing much space.

The Thermostatic features a low-profile hood that keeps your head cozy when you're wearing a helmet. Elasticized cuffs keep the sleeves in place when you layer a waterproof shell over it, and dual hem drawcords provide an ideal fit whether you have a harness or backpack on. Men's XL Review

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

First off, I've appreciated the reviews on this site where folks list their I'll start there. I am 6'5" & 225lb.

I read a few reviews that said as the size goes up this jacket gets a bit boxy or square - a problem I experience often with XL garments. I initially ordered a Large hoping for a more slim fit. The fit was great but the sleeves were too short and the jacket fell just below my belt line. I returned it for a XL.

I haven't taken this jacket through the paces and that's not really why I bought it. I live in Central California where it is hot most of the time but cools to 50s during the winter months. I wanted something that would work for the cool temperatures and the occasional trip to the Sierras. This jacket pretty much nails it for me. I like that I can layer under and over this jacket very easily.

The XL did lose some of the 'slimness' but the drawcords help create the fitted look.

This jacket is definitely a layer and probably shouldn't be used as a shell unless you are only dealing with wind and cool temperatures.

Lastly, I had a great experience with Steep&Cheap/Backcountry when buying this jacket. I paid for the 2-day shipping because I was headed up to the mountains with some friends. When I realized the Large was too small I sent them an email asking if I could get a XL for the same price (it was a S&C purchase) and retain the 2-day shipping option. They wrote back saying they would guarantee it would be on my doorstep before I left for my trip and the delivered. Pretty cool.
