Description

... as a friggin' feather.

Mountain Hardwear did everything they could to make the Supermega UL 2-person Tent as light and convenient as possible. The lightweight yet durable nylon ripstop floor and fly compress down small and add scant ounces. The Supermega UL doesn't skimp on space or durability, though; it's plenty big enough for two people to sleep comfortably and tough enough for heavy winds and nasty weather.
  • 10D nylon fly and 30D nylon ripstop floor keep weight to an absolute minimum
  • Super-lightweight DAC Featherlight NSL aluminum poles add strength without weighing down your pack
  • Fully taped fly, taped perimeter seam, welded corners, and welded guy-clip anchors for guaranteed watertight construction
  • Lightweight buckles and webbing further reduce tent weight
  • Front vestibule entry gives you a place to store boots so you don't track snow or mud into the tent
  • Pitch light configuration allows you to set up a shelter with just the footprint, poles, and fly for a 8 ounce weight reduction (footprint sold separately)

Can I get a height from some of you Supermega 2P users...I'm 6'2" and want to make sure I fit . Peace!

Hey PowMow1,

The interior height of the tent is low. So you will be sitting or kneeling inside the tent when you are maneuvering around. The floor dimensions are about 7 ft long. So laying down you will be able to fit the tent nicely (probably with your head towards the door).

The Best Free Standing UL tent

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have used the Super Mega UL 2 as a solo tent for the last two years mainly for a base shelter for peakbagging. There is room for your sleep system, backpack, boots and room to spare. The tent goes up quick, pitches taunt including no loose mesh on the inside drooping in on you. The elliptical design cuts the wind while the side fly guyouts are connected to the tent body allowing for excellent ventilation. Most of my trips have it pitched at 5-8k' and it's performed awesomely for the weight. Good shoulder season tent.

Great Tent

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have taken this tent on 3 trips now. It's very lightweight, and fits inside my pack (MH Wandrin 48) perfectly. I did also buy the footprint, which is way overpriced, and made out of cheap tyvek, but because it was a separate purchase it does not affect the review of the tent. However it does raise the weight to about 3 lbs total. The tent pitches fast, and is freestanding, but stakes are required to use the rain fly. You could get away with 4 stakes in low wind. 2 Adults will fit in this tent, but it will be tight. Tapered or 3/4 length Sleeping Pads fit best. With two people your packs will have to go outside, there is only enough room in the vestibule for one pack. I have only slept in the tent alone, and had plenty of room for me and my pack. The reflective guy lines are a plus when you have to find your tent in the dark (don't forget your headlamp on that midnight pee expedition) The color is a huge plus, and one of the main reasons I chose this tent over the BA Flycreek 2. I like for my tent to blend into the environment. The hub style tent poles are great, and snap into position quickly. Care is needed when packing, shoving poles and tent stakes can snag on the mesh on the tent body. If you need extra room in your pack the tent will easily fit on the side of a pack in one of the water bottle pockets.

Solid UltraLight!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The supermega UL 2 is a well thought out light weight backpacking tent. I have used this tent almost a dozen times now and it has held up against southern Utah monsoon like downpours to uinta mountain rainy days. Clear nights with no rain fly are great if you want to get your star watch on as well.

If you are trekking solo this tent provides ample room for you and your gear. With a second person it is a tight fit, but not too uncomfortable. I prefer it when backpacking because of the 2.7 pounds it weighs and it takes up such a small amount of room in my pack.

My only complaint about this tent is the lack of headroom. I am 5' 11" and sitting up inside the tent is almost impossible with a 2nd person. When I am camping alone however, it is quite comfortable.

Not all there

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I purchased this tent to replace a Big Agnes tent. I also ordered the footprint. I was disappointed that the footprint is really just a piece of tyvek like material that was bulky, white in color and had ties outs at the corners. It also was extremely noisy and heavy. The tent itself has good shape but had very little stability in wind. The product comes with eight stakes but there are ten tie out points. Thus the weight is really inaccurate in that to obtain stability you would need to add two stakes. Between the footprint issue and the stability issue, I did not find this to be a functional product for me. Add two stakes, make an appropriate footprint and then recalculate for a more accurate weight. I returned the tent under Backcountry's fabulous return policy.

I disagree with this evaluation. The tent does indeed come with eight stakes and there are two guylines on the main hoop that would require two more stakes. I use Easton six inch stakes available right here on Backcountry.com, which weigh 0.25 ounces each adding 1/2 ounce to the total weight. No one includes the weight of a foot print in any of the tent specs so why the requirement on THIS tent. I use Tyvek 1443R available on Amazon and make my own ground cloths and avoid the stiff feel of regular Tyvek or I use Polycro available at Gossamer Gear for an even lighter solution to the ground cloth problem. Mostly I don't use a ground cloth at all. As to the stability, I used my tent for the first time this weekend and did not find it to be even slightly unstable in what I considered to be moderate windy conditions and I didn't stake out the two lines on the main hoop. I'll post my own review after I've used it a few more times.

How many stakes does the MH Supermegal UL 2 come with? Any idea on how much they weigh?

Responded on

Comes with eight; add two Easton stakes for right at one ounce and you have ten for the ten tieouts. Read excellent review of this tent on backpackinglight.com. You will rarely, if ever, need to use the two tie outs.
