fantastic sub zero jacket

High performance jacket that keeps you cozy and warm in the coldest conditions. Just used it at camp and as my back-up jacket for climbing and skiing at higher altitudes in Bolivia, and in some fierce winds, and was well protected. Detachable hood and other great features like lined pockets and collar. I am 5'8 and athletic build- Medium was the perfect size. WARM!

Video review - MHW SubZero Jacket

This is the men's version of the SubZero jacket, but it is the same basic thing - a warm, high quality, comfy down jacket. I think I say in the video that it is 800 fill, but it is not - it's 650.

You will not be let down.

Perfect for cold weather. Bought this jacket this winter right before we hit about -18 and let me tell you, I never got cold. Thank you Mountain Hardwear.

Responded on

MJO. I would say it is shiny-er than it is matte. The jackets are made with a 100% Rip-Stop Nylon Shell which kicks off a bit of shine for sure but it is fairly normal for this type of fabric on this type of jacket. Hope this helps!

I am very long waisted, I am wondering if this jacket will be long enough to keep the "junk in my trunk" warm? If not, what hooded jacket might you recommend?

Responded on

Nancy, try to find the Parka version of this jacket. I think your 'junk' will thank you for the added coverage.

Responded on

Unfortunately, there isn't a parka version of the Sub Zero SL for women. There's one for men, but all women have for the parka is the non-SL version, so it's not waterproof. Come on, MH!

Great jacket

I wore this parka on my first successful summit climb of Mt Rainier. It was the perfect layer for breaks and for the summit. The hood fit nicely over my helmet and the jacket provided the warmth I needed.

This one won!

I tried out eight down parkas and this is the one I finally chose. The fit is good for me (size Large--I'm 5'5', about 150 lbs.) and the style wraps me in cozy warmth. The Icefall is a gorgeous color but I went with black just for practicality. Can't wait for next winter to enjoy it fully.

Yes its great

Like everybody else, I love this jacket. Very weatherproof, a light rain runs right off it. Fantastic hood. Unlike most women's coats, it actually fits real women; long enough in the arms to actually move them, big enough to wear layers under it (yes it does run a little big), long enough to keep your butt warm, enough room in the arms and shoulders. And it really fits like a women's coat, not a man's. Also unlike most women's coats, it is actually warm! Very warm! No sewn thru seams or cold spots. Yes it's not the lightest thing out there, but it's pretty light and for the price it's pretty high performance. Wait for a sale and you will have a great value in an all purpose winter garment.

I'm 5'5" and 180lbs. I received this jacket as a gift in a Large and I feel like I'm swimming in it. The sleeves and the chest feel huge but the bottom is just right for my hips. But- from what i read this jacket is supposed to sit at the waist instead. I need some help. Should i return this?

Meg. If it doesn't feel like it fits... I would try and exchange it for a different size. Perhaps the medium would fit you a little better? Definitely get the one that fits as you will enjoy it that much better.

I am a plus-size female and very interested in the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Down Parka, but the womens sizes only go up to 16, and I normally wear around a 20/24. I prefer my coats to fit large, so I would wear my coats at least a 3x or 4x. I am looking at the mans sizes to see if that would fit me, but I'm afraid the sleeves would be too long. Can you tell me if other women have purchased the mens coat and complained about the sizing? Thank you for your time. I desperately need a heavy-duty winter parka, but have a hard time finding PLUS SIZE for ladies.

K.M. I would go ahead and purchase a men's size. I am not exactly clear on how the sizes correlate but you will probably find the closest fit this way. Also, it is possible depending on your height that the sleeves could be a little long. There is only one way to find out!

Very Warm jacket...Perfect

I bought this jacket for a photography trip to Yellowstone in January. This was a great coat. I got a break in the weather so my coldest day was -7 with a pretty fierce wind but this coat just laughed at it. I have no doubt that it will handle minus 20 and further. I loved the interior pockets for keeping camera batteries warm next to my body. The hood comes quite forward and can block your side view but absolutely great for when the wind is really blowing...It really scrunches quite small for packing and can be stuffed into included bag...although that was a bit of a wrestling match. All in all...loved the coat even though it is not the least bit sexy or flashy as you can see from the picture.

Harris. There is 278g of 650+ down in a medium Women's Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket. The jacket is also baffled like a sleeping bag which means no cold spots! Hope this info helps!

Warm as a Goose!

As a girl who is known for always being cold, I can tell you that this jacket can keep anybody warm. I recently purchased this jacket for myself to keep warm during Canada's long cold winters, and let me tell you; I fell in love. When you think of a down jacket one might worry that it would make you look puffy. Yet I found that all this jacket does is make you look smart. It fits true to size and has nice oversized pockets with zippers. It also has a nice big hood for those extra hold days. This is the perfect jacket for those girls who just can't seem to kick their chill. This little goose will warm you up and block out wind and snow in no time.

hi, i'm about 5'4'' and 115 lbs. i'm not sure, what size fits. normaly wear xs - the jacket should be thigt, i needn't anything more than a t-shirt under it. what size should i order?at mountain equipment i'm wearing size 10! i'm from germany and it would be not funny, if i have to send the jacket back...thanks a lot for your help!

Responded on

My girlfriend is about your size. 5'5" and 120 lbs and she is very happy with how the xs jacket fits. Given that you are a little shorter than her you probably want to stick with the XS as well.

Hope this helps.

Wife is 5' 92 lbs and she has the XS parka version of this coat. Fit is great which is awesome since most of the time we have to find mature looking children's clothes because nobody makes stuff in her size! Imagine the problem we have finding womens size 5 1/2 shoes!?!

Order a size smaller

I ordered this jacket in a medium based on the sizing chart and it is HUGE. It hung off my shoulders and I had a good 6-8 inches of room in the chest. I exchanged it for a small and the small fits me perfectly.

Responded on

I'm going to follow-up on this review after having this jacket for almost a year. The hood is what makes this jacket so unbelievably warm. By insulating your head and neck and sealing out the cold, your whole body can stay warm. I also have to comment on the laminate finish on the fabric. While it does shed water, it also sheds....engine paint!! My boyfriend shook a can of florescent orange engine paint that ended up having a hole in the can. The splatter got all over this jacket. I was sick until we started working to remove the paint. With some mineral spirits, all the paint is gone and you'd never know it even happened. I couldn't believe it.

I wear my SubZero puffy all the time! This is one of my favorite jackets and I love how it cuts out the windchill while snowmobiling, keeps me dry while storm skiing and looks good when going out. This jacket is very puffy and warm, but with the pit zips you can air out and avoid overheating.
