For cold-weather mountaineering expeditions, make the Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket your toasty refuge for chilly belays and summit-ridge slogs. This 650-fill down jacket features Taslan reinforcements on the shoulders and arms for resisting harsh mountain abrasion. Two fleece handwarmer pockets keep blood flowing in your digits, and the Sub Zero compresses quickly for easy transport.
Bottom Line: Furnace-like warmth for sub-zero conditions.
Hi, This review is for the 2010 model which seems different from the previous versions. It has more area reinforced with tougher fabric in the shoulder and arms. Fit is improved since I believe MH lengthened the cut a bit in the torso. I am 6-2 190 and it fits perfectly over baselayer, fleece and even my softshell but still doesnt feel too bulky or excessively large. I havent tested it but seems like a durable, warm jacket but still light enough for backpacking. It packs surprisingly small! (can be compressed much more than the size of the included stuff sack)
mapsiman. The Sub Zero Jacket does in fact have a DWR treatment on the shell fabric. The Sub Zero SL jacket actually utilizes not only a DWR but the Conduit SL laminate as well. Both jackets are weather resistant but the Sub Zero SL hooded jacket would be much more so due to the laminate. I hope this info helps!

Super warm jacket at a good price. Kept me warm while mountaineering in India or hiking in the Grand Canyon. Super versatile, and stuffs down pretty small to boot. The only thing I don't like is that the down in the bottom compartment in the back is a little lacking, and that the down in general has a tendency to come out of certain seams, but that is a known problem in all down jackets. Some are worse than others, and I'd say this one holds up pretty well. Overall I highly recommend it.
I gave this 5 stars for all the positives. Looks great, warm as heck, and fantastic warmth to weight ratio. The protective covering on shoulders and sleeves is nice as well. My wife's North Face does not have that feature... One thing to note - this rides right at the waist. I am 6 ft tall 225lbs and bought the XL. Fit is great but if you do not tuck in whatever you are wearing underneath - it will show. Great jacket for casual wear. By the way -I give Backcountry.com 6 stars. FANTASTIC SERVICE, I would not buy anywhere else, period. (and i never write reviews)
can this jacket be midlayer of shell-arc'teryx sidewinder jacket? MontBell Alpine Light Down Jacket 's fill power is 800, but, this jacket 's one is 65o. which is the warmer?
mapsiman. The Alpine Light Down Jacket weighs in at 11.5 ounces. The Sub Zero Jacket weighs in at 27 ounces for a large. This is most likely due to the amount of down used in each jacket (warmth) and heavier more durable shell fabrics (durability). Because one is built with 800-fill and one is built with 650-fill has very little to do with how warm the jackets actually are. The overall amount of down used contributes more to warmth than the type of down used to insulate. A more comparable jacket to the Alpine Light in Mountain Hardwear's line would be the Phantom Jacket. I hope this info helps!
This jacket should be warmer than that model MontBell but I am sure you will get different opinions on that. But, this jacket is also more bulky and more of the "puffy" look. You could layer over this if your shell is large enough. Just make sure you are not totally compressing the down, it loses insulating effectivness when heavily compressed.
This is a decent warm jacket. It is nicely detailed by MH.
However if you are contemplating this jacket you should really jump upto the hooded version. If you need this warm of a jacket you really want the hood. Plus the hooded version has a Conduit shell.
This is really more of an around town jacket in my book. If you really do cold get the hooded. If you want light go for a thinner 800 fill sweater like a Marmot Zeus.
Does anyone know the total back length of this jacket? I'm 6'2, 200lb, athletic build and don't know what size to order. Or if I maybe should order the parka instead. It drives me nuts when my ass crack shows or the sleeves are too short!!
I agree with the previous review. This is my 3rd MHW down jacket. I wore out the Phantom and the lodown. The sub Z is rugged & toasty warm but a little on the bulky side. Im 510 165 with athletic build and the large fits OK.
I went back and forth on getting this for a while. I finally bit the bullet and made the purchase. Absolutely worth every penny!! Very warm, albeit a bit short for me. At 6' and about 250, a 2XL gets around the equator just fine but a tad short for my liking. Pit zips would have been a fantastic addition but still a fantastic jacket.
I bought this jkt on sale for 110.00. After buying and returning 2 different RLX Polo Jkts. 2x"s..I found this bargain..Its warm and detailed nicely..If you want more or whatever go spend 200-300.00 ...
Like it, except the down keep trying to escape thru the shell.... feel like i'm shredding and i don't have a dog. therefore, can't return since i'm already wearing it. In rating, i give it a 3 because it looks great, fit well & it's warm (for now)
I just got my 2010 model and I'm not impressed. It does not have the same amount of loft as the same jacket I purchased January 2009. The fit is not as roomy and the overall quality is not the same as my other Sub Zero Jacket. If I didn't have the older jacket, it would be adequate, but in comparison it seems cheap. I'm very likely going to return it.
I have the 2010 model. The warmest jacket I own. I'd probably shop a little more now if I were in the market for this type of jacket. I wish it had pit zips because after shoveling some snow I was soaking wet inside. Its not a long cut in the back. It can ride up like others have said. It compresses down pretty well into a nice little bag if your into this. Its a nice looking jacket. I like the bigger fleece lined chest pocket and handwarmer pockets. Some other brands give you these small non fleece lined pockets which are just a bitch. Overall I'd give this review 4 stars. I dont need/want the hood or I would have upgraded. If it had pit zips this jacket hands down would get over 5 stars. In fact, if MH ever redesigned this jacket keeping everything the same but added nice long pit zips, I'd donate my old jacket to the poor tomorrow and pick up the newer version. Dont give me this "it adds weight bs" just add the pit zips. Overall great jacket though.
