The Mountain Hardwear Splitter 38 Backpack features plenty of pockets so that you'll know where every piece of your rig is once you get to the rock. The Splitter's panel-loading design means that you can open this pack, lay it flat on the rock, and see your chalk, shoes, harness, rope, and webbing cleverly organized in climbing-specific pockets.
CoolWave suspension provides cushioning and ventilation along with a HardWave frame sheet to prevent pack-buckling on the approach
Included pull-out tarp lets you unload everything without worrying about wet or muddy ropes
Panel access makes organizing and getting to your kit a breeze
An internal compression divider keeps all your heavy ropes and gear flush against your back for a manageable carry on dicey approaches
One zippered interior compartment separates your chalk and shoe funk from the rest of your load
One zippered mesh interior compartment holds your harnesses and keeps them from getting tangled in your ropes and webbing
Large front daisy chain totes draws and hardware to the crag
A large front pocket stores layers, food, and other gear
Two ice axe loops secure you tools as you meander through the alpine
Bottom Line: A climbing daypack that adds a bit of organization.
Love this bag for hitting the crag. I'm kind of a neat freak and the setup of this bag really fits my style. As said below the rope tarp is a bit to small for keeping your rope off the dirt, instead I lay my opened bag on the tarp allowing me to keep all my gear free of unwanted dirt.
I have loaded my bag with 15 QD's, 8 slings, 3 diffent sized cords, a set of nuts, 15 more carabiners, 10.2mm 60m rope in a metolious rope bag, nut tool, harness, shoes, chalk bag, lunch for 2, 2-3 water bottles, wallet, keys, phone, first aid kit, and tape. Have some room to spare and its still really comfy on my shoulders all loaded up for those long approaches.
Picked this up from REI scratch and dent $50. I prefer it over the Arc'teryx Miura for the better organizational setup. I just took it out for a day packed w/ 60m rope, single-pitch trad and sport racks. + shoes, chalk, harness, lunch, 3 1L nalgenes, hydration bladder (in special pocket), personal effects (in special pocket) - sunglasses, wallet, keys, etc. Found that everything was EASY to access without dumping the contents of the pack. Also everything except helmet fit inside no problem. Plenty of room for everything you need for a day at the crag.
I found that the pack is a little short for my torso (I'm 5'11") - hip belt sits too high, so had to share some of the load on my shoulders. Even so, a 5 mile trek fully loaded was still a comfortable enough carry.
The beefy construction and many pockets adds some extra weight to this beast. I would not use as a substitute for regular backpack due to the boxy shape, lack of waterproof zippers, no top compartment. Strictly for climbing use. Also probably not great for peak assaults or mountaineering , etc. Included rope tarp is ok but rope management is easier to just throw in the 'ole rope bag if going to be moving from route to route.

This is a well built pack and perfect for the sport crag. I ended up returning it because it just wasn't large enough for my entire trad rack also, but that was my fault.
this is a perfect pack not only for the crag but for mostly anything. a few things the medium/large version of this pack is 42 liters so its a bit bigger the compression strap in the inside works wonders when you need to keep your stuff close to your back (like when mountain biking or running. the bottom inside pocket is in a way hidden so that when you dont open the pack fully it cant really be seen or gotten into so if you need something from there you will need to open it more .the bottom of the pack fits a otter box 3000 or a half a gallon . the mesh pocket in the top fits lots of things its perfect for having things handy . the loops on the top that are design for quickdraws work very well for that purpuse or if you have a small carabiner you can even hang a hydration bladder to it and leave a little space in the zipper you can have the water hose hang to the front and hook it there so you can have it with you. the water bottle pockets are big enough for a 2 liter wide mouth water bottle and a skinny water bottle also feels secure but for extra saftey you can also add the compression strap to pass by the water bottle so it wont fall, the ice axe loops can hold an ice axe (duh) , sleeping bag if you tie it or put carabiners to it from a stuff sack , axe , or other tools. the secret pocket in the front works well for having notebook , flashlight , multi tool . the security pocket is not very big which is a disapointment but fits a htc hero and a apple classic 120gb in there comftably. and the hole pocket is very large and can fit lots of things like gloves and a lunch. the hip belt pockets are not as big as i would like , you can put a couple hand warmers there and a lighter and fit a hacky sack it also fit my kodak playsport camara
This pack takes over my crag pack duties from the tried and true Metolius Crag Station. I decided to upgrade a bit mostly for the padded and ventilated suspension on this pack which keeps my back dry and my shoulders fresh when showing up at the wall. Takes a few more moments to pack than my Crag Station but in the end provides a better carrying experience overall. Been loving it for over a week now. Love the compact and well thought out organization.
