From a grassy patch next to an alpine lake to a hastily arranged snow camp, the Mountain Hardwear Spire 2.1 Tent gives two hikers, skiers, or climbers comfortable, four-season protection from the elements.

  • Dual doors and vestibules for individual entry and gear storage
  • Welded weather window for checking on conditions
  • Reflective guy loops and zipper pulls for easy visibility
  • Mesh storage pockets for organizing small items

Bottom Line: Bridge the gap between four-season protection and three-season weight savings.

How good is the summer ventilation in this tent? I'm looking for a tent that can hold up to cold, rain, and possibly snow, but can vent well enough to make summer camping trips in AZ not hellish. I figured this one might work, since the two doors might allow for some cross-breeze, if you use the mesh doors.

I agree with the last answer. You're going to be using this tent primarily in Arizona so ventilation is imperative, anything else is secondary, & do you really need a four season tent? For what you get, this MHW two person tent is heavier & more expensive than others on the market. I've been using the Big Agnes Emerald Mountain in Colorado into early winter for the last two years & it offers more than most @ a very reasonable price. Compare all the specs. I definitely think it's worthy of your consideration. Here's more information:

For what you're looking for, this is probably the closet thing you could get, depending on how much snow you're looking at. If you're only worried about a dusting occasionally, I'd look at something with more mesh like a true 3 season. In my experience, I've done alright - not great - with MHW 3-season tents in some light snow, plus, they're going to be more breathable. That said, with out the fly and using the mesh, you'd probably be alright. Just remember that Backcountry has got an awesome return policy!

As good as you can get

I spent over 100 nights in this tent last winter in Crested Butte, CO in the Gunnison Valley. The Gunnison Valley is considered one of the coldest in the contiguous united states with an average temperature in January of negative 7 degrees and lows in the negative twenties and thirties at night. I can attest to the quality, waterproofness, ability to support over 200 pounds of snow in a 4 foot storm, and pretty much just rugged bombproofness of this tent. And all that at an astounding 5 lbs. Highly tested, and highly reccomended.

Write your question here...Hello.
I'm debating on buying Mountain Hardware's Spire 2, last years model(2007-2008). What is the difference between this years new model(2009)Spire 2.1 verses last years model Spire 2. Is the extra $ worth while. Intermediate hiker.
Please help me make a decision. Thank you

I dunno dude, both tents have the same floor dimensions: 46" X 88". The difference seems to be the 2.1 is 4" shorter and weighs 8 oz. heavier. Say....

The Spire 2.1 is slightly longer and slightly wider than the Spire 2 making for a much more comfortable tent overall. Cheers!

ihave used this tent for many ,many nights up on the presedentials in n.h.this winter, and has withstood snow (and ice storms) and winds up to around 80 mph,and has been GREAT..light,has a small footprint, and very easy to set up...the only small issue is the rain fly which is a bit short, but has'nt been an issue for me..i'ts great for one person with winter gear, but you can use it for two if you want to get real cozy !!!!!!!
