Good basic, solid mitten for BC skiing

I'd go for 4.5 stars on these mittens if the half star rating was available. Almost perfect, at least for warmish Wasatch backcountry skiing. I love the leather palms and they way the break-in nicely with ski poles. The trigger finger on the liner is really nice as it gives you a good feel for dealing with buckles and straps, and, it helps keep the liner from "rolling" inside of the mitten shell, which is part of what makes mittens seem so clumsy.

I like how I can wear these as is, or strip out the liners and use them in warm conditions, or, just use the shells if you are trenching through snow and want some protection for you hands, but want to keep your liners off and dry. It is like getting three sets of mittens for the price of one.

The Spearhead is not a super warm mitten and would probably not be enough for places like Alaska or elsewhere where it can get rip-ass cold. But, for a general purpose mitten at an excellent price, the Spearhead is my long standing favorite.

I would opt for a shell mitt that has its own insulation, and then add a warm liner. With this one, you are basically left with only the softshell plus a 200-weight liner. Take a look at http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Marmot-Expedition-Mitt/MAR0324M.html and pair it with a very warm wool of fleece liner. Buy it from Backcountry and you can always return it if it doesn't work for you.

Liam. Check out the Masherbrum Mitt from Mountain Hardwear. Definitely one of the warmest mitts we have ever made and what I would choose if I were winter camping. Hope this helps! These are the first pair of mittens I have bought, I'm not disappointed. Very warm and waterproof. I used them while hiking to a peak in a snow snow and below zero windchills, hands were never cold. I would recommend these. The price was right.

Love these mittens, I'm usually not a big fan of mittens but I bought them for extremely cold weather use while not skiing. Using them for things like spectating sports, casual outdoor use, etc. They're not extremely warm since they're not insulated but the liner in these is quite warm. I especially love the trigger finger liner. Gives you a bit more dexterity when the shell is removed. High quality and waterproof, great gloves all around.
