Great Winter Shell

By:
March 28, 2012

This is a great shell for any sort of winter activity.
-Extremely waterproof, windproof, etc
-Tough
-Breathes well for a heavy shell (pit zips help)
-Plenty of pockets
-zippers work easily
-Fantastic hood (big, but cinches down perfectly)
-looks good

The DryQ Elite is supposed to be a huge breakthrough in breathability, however it is not that remarkable. I still got overheated slightly on sunny days on Mt Hood, but it took more heat than it used to with my old gore-tex and thats nothing the pit zips didn't help. The butter cuffs feel great, but they are useless if you are wearing gloves.

All in all, this is a great winter weight shell. Protects great from all the elements with some durability. Warm enough for 30 degree days with light layering, and even colder with a fleece/insulated later. I would highly recommend this jacket for skiing, snowshoeing, climbing, etc.

Just curious, Is the waterproof/breathability data for Dry.Q

Just curious,
Is the waterproof/breathability data for Dry.Q Elite reliable? They seems too good to be ture. How does it feel comparing to goretex or eVent jacket?

It's real. The fabric is so breathable that it almost doesn't feel windproof. The feel of the jacket as a whole depends on the base fabric MH uses. On the Snowpocalypse, it feels soft and flexible and has a fuzzy backing fabric. On other shells, MH laminates DryQ to a more hard-shell fabric that makes it feel more like eVent or Gore.

This jacket is winning at life!

You're either winning or loosing, nothing in between. All other jackets are jealous of the Snowpocalypse because it's more handsome and talented. This jacket has exactly what you need for ski touring/resort skiing. It's a very durable/breathable fortress from the elements. It wins here (the downhill) and there (the uphill). The new Dry Q technology really does work to allow you to stay dry on the inside when your pushing hard on the skin track.

Make a choice to win and win!

I say why not? I've seen people in the reverse of that color scheme and it works. Plus, you're very noticeable in bounds!

Great Except for Sizing

By:
March 8, 2012

I really want to like this jacket. The material, workmanship, aesthetics, etc are all great. The Dry.Q fabric is amazing. However, the fit is a bit strange, as has been described by a few other reviews. At 6'0", 190lbs, I pretty much ALWAYS wear a large. I tried that originally, and tried to make i work, but there just wasn't enough room for layering, sort of defeating the purpose of a skiing-specific shell. I exchanged for an XL which was a better fit, but it just left waaaaay too much room in the abdomen area, and since my beer belly isn't quite there yet, it was just too bulky in that area. I really hope MH work on the fit and sizing on these jackets in the future. They seem to be somewhat in no man's land in my opinion. Other than that, great piece of kit. If I could have made it work, and believe me I tried, I would have kept this for sure. I'm hoping to revisit in the future if/when they work on the sizing a bit.

I'm considering purchasing the snowpocalypse, and have reading

I'm considering purchasing the snowpocalypse, and have reading some varying reviews about the size. I tried on a DryStein in an XL and it seem to fit accordingly to my needs. However, I am wondering if the Snowpocalypse fits the same as I have seen people say otherwise. I am 5'10" 200lbs and plan on using the jacket for skiing and other alpine activities.

I bought one of these and sent it back, but I can comment a little on sizing. I'm 5'10" 185lbs (about a 41" chest) and the Large sort of fit but was a hair tight across the back (i.e., if I folded my arms across my chest). The XL would be way too big though.

Another point to note: the Voltage color is much more green/less yellow than it looks in the pictures.

Anyway, I wound up buying a Marmot Zion in Large, which fits perfectly.

Michael,

Short answer is no, they do not fit the same. Sizing is not consistent between the Drystein and the Snowpocalypse. I reccomend you try on the Snowpocalype in a shop.

jwilliam. Fully taped. NOT just critically seam taped. Fully Taped, Waterproof, Breathable, and Air Permeable. This fabric rates to right around 40K on the waterproof scale which is basically as good as it gets. I hope this info helps!

Boom. Snowpocalypse.

By:
October 14, 2011

I really had a hard time deciding between this jacket and the Jovian. I liked that the Jovian was simple and didn't have the dark shoulder patches. Ultimately I decided on the Snowpocalypse and I'm pretty glad I did. This jacket has an extra layer of laminate which will be better for cold days (I think, anyway) and is slightly roomier than the Jovian which will make layering easier on super cold days.
I live in Utah and ski at Snowbasin which has enclosed gondolas for lifts and I sweat more at this resort than any other place so I am really interested in how well the DryQ will keep me cool. So far I'm impressed when I wear it on chilly fall nights.
I'm 6'1" 165 lbs. I went with the medium Blue and the size is pretty standard for a medium. The blue is pretty sick. It's hard to see in the pic but it has some orange stitching highlights that really standout. I also purchased the Snowpocalypse ps pants in orange and the combo is really vibrant. Bring on the snow!

Sorry, I never check to see comments. El Duderino the orange is exactly the same. I look like a Boise State University fan when I'm skiing. Goeff, I still think that the Snowpocalypse jacket is better for me than the Jovian. I agree that the Jovian is sexier and the dark shoulder patches don't bother me as much as they did before my purchase. But the Snowpocalypse is a burlier jacket than the Jovain. My co-worker has the Jovian so I've compared them side by side and I don't have any buyer's remorse.

Are you still happy with the Snowpocalypse over the Jovian? I really don't like those dark shoulder patches, but the powder skirt is a nice feature. Trying to decide between the two.
