Great jacket

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs large

Climbed a number of peaks with this jacket.

Pros:

- the hood is amazing. Super easy to adjust, fits over helmets and without helmets, and stays where you put it so that you can protect your face as well.

- high zippers are great for harnesses. Of course my hands are sad when I am off the mountain and have no pockets to put them in, but for climbing the pockets are perfect.

- I didn't feel like I needed pit zips or other ventilation, no sweating and no freezing

- held up under some substantial wind. Haven't yet used the jacket in heavy rain/snow.

Cons:

- was larger than I expected. I have other Mountain Hardwear jackets in L, so that's what I ordered, but I did feel a bit like I was swimming (and I live out of the country so exchanging not an option). Still, plenty of room to move even with three or four layers underneath.

- the geyser color is more seafoam green than I expected. Would have preferred red but not willing to pay double price for another color.

Great jacket

Seraction Review

Dawn Glanc, climbing guide, reviews the Seraction jacket.

If you unzip the pockets on the front you can some venting, but at that point you might just unzip the front. Mountain Hardwear states that the fabric breathes well enough that it doesn't need pit zips. Unfortunately I can't comment on how well it works as I bought the jacket for my wife, and am thinking about trying it out especially for the pockets not being impeded by my hip belt or harness... (but haven't yet... price is sweet for top tier jacket on clearance)

Is the jacket true to size or should I...

Is the jacket true to size or should I order a size up for layering?

Best Answer

Size up for laying. It has a slim fit so it will be a bit tight. With a jacket like this, I would be climbing with just a tight thick baselayer and this, then when I get to a belay station I would put a puffy over it not under. If you want to ski with it or put stuff under It could get tight so size up. You can always try both sizes and then send one back, we will cover shipping back.
