Four-way stretch ensures that the Mountain Hardwear Power Stretch Hardface Balaclava gives you complete coverage and comfort when the mercury pulls a disappearing act. The snug fit allows you to wear the Power Stretch under your helmet or hood so you can ski or climb on days when everybody else is just too cold to go, and because it's hinged at the sides, you can use it to cover as much or as little of your face as you need.

So worth it!

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Growing up in an age where my mother put a neckwarmer on me every time we went outside in winter, I wasn't looking forward to the need of wearing them again while trying to tackle the NH 4000 footers in winter. Enter the Mountain Hardwear Hardface Stretch Convertible Balaclava! This thing is awesome. It cuts wind and breathes really well.

It looks great, and easily moves up and down your neck and/or face as much as you want. Really cold? Cover your whole face but your eyes so you can see! Don't need that much coverage? No problem, just slide the neck part downwards! The way the neckwarmer part is attached to the head is what allows this flexibility.

The thin but effective hardfleece stops most of the wind and keeps you warm without causing your face to sweat out. And it's not too tight, meaning you can still breathe freely and not feel like you're being suffocated.

Only downside is that (like any balaclava I've used) it can still wet out and/or freeze around your mouth if you're breathing into the fabric...

Overall it is really well made and I never leave home without it in the winter when I'm off for outdoor activities!

Best one I've had yet!

This balaclava is an excellent piece for under helmets and keeping you warm. The articulating elbows are great for wearing it under your chin or over your nose.

I've worn it several times for skiing this season and the *only* problem I have with it is that when I'm breathing heavy after some powder runs my goggles can fog up a bit due to ventilation.

I'll take the warmth and function factor before I worry about that any day, though.

Balmy Balaclava

IT KEEPS YOU WARM. But it also doesn't have great ventilation so if you're breathing a lot sometimes you get a bit of an ice build up. You also kind of end up looking like a potential bank robber, which may or may not be a con?

    It's OK, but...

A balaclava is a must during any winter outings. I bought this and it does a good job at keeping the face and head warm.... Only problem is that you can have some fogging issues because there are no vent holes around the nose or mouth. Without vents the warm air is pushed up to the goggles or glasses. I still use this as a spare, but I did buy the MHW Desna Balaclava and have been very happy with it.

    Excellent face protection

I bought this for winter hiking and ended up using it when walking the dog early in the morning when I had a cold and didn't want to beathe the cold are. It's comfortable, fits well (I have a small head), and the part that covers the lower half of your face stays put. I think this might be a model that MH has discontinued, so if you like what you see, buy it. Well worth the money.
