Mountain Hardwear Phantom Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down - 2007 BCS

I have the women's version of this bag. Bought in 2007. The loft is great. No problems with the zipper. Quality construction. Granted, I am a cold sleeper, but when the temps fall below 30 I have struggled to stay warm in this bag, and when they dip to the low 20's, I am COLD. I had a Sierra Design 20 down bag prior to this. I had always been happy with it, but the Phantom was a pound lighter, so I swapped bags. Many a cold night on the AT in March and April had me wishing I had carried the extra weight. I'm still giving it 3 stars, because it is a well made bag, and might be just fine for those who do not sleep cold.

I've got the 5ºF degree version and I've slept very comfortably down to 15ºF in the open without a bivy sac. Its probably heavier than other bags due to the zip-in capabilities, but its good bag regardless.

Had ltwt (exped down wallcreeper) bag that was always cold. I DO sleep cold. I wanted a 2# bag that was truly warm to 30 min and hopefully 20 degrees. THis will be my primary bag 3+ season. I slept in it for about 7-8 nights. It was not cold so I can not accurately assess temp BUT it was super cozy to 40-45 degrees. I used it as a quilt until near dawn when I zipped up. It is light, disads are tight quarters in mid leg area so cannot take off pants in bag. Otherwise no comfort probs for a skinny 6'3''. Also half zip does not allow as much ventilation. I am very happy with this bag otherwise.

The Mountain Hardwear Phantom is a bag that packs down small! I dont know if I would give it a true 15 degrees, id say about 20 degrees, however the bag retains some serious heat. I have used mine anywhere from 16 degrees to the high 30s. It definitely performs much better in drier climates. I usually accompany my bag with a Big Agnes insulated Air Core sleeping pad, and my Outdoor Research Aurora bivy. Overall, this is an amazing bag that you can count on to lighten you load and keep you warm at night. I bought a regular sized bag; I am 5ft 8 and I have a little extra room in my feet. A short would have been perfect for me.

Just came back from a trip to the Big Sur area of California. During Thanksgiving night the temperature dropped to the mid 30s, and I was nice and warm. The next day it rained the until noon, and while tent bound the sky blue color of this bag really cheered things up. The zipper did snag a bit, but overall it was a great bag. The 3/4 zipper was easy getting used to since it allowed for much quicker exit than half-length zippers. My only complaints are that the actual weight was 3oz heavier than stated and bag does not seem as warm as my Marmot Pinnacle, though it is 9oz heavier. Also, loft was NOT 6 inches as stated by MH, but great bag nonetheless.

This bag is incredible. Very warm and definitely true to the temp rating. What I really love is the compressibility. I have fit this bag in some TINY stuff sacks before. The fabric is thin but pretty durable and the draft collar and hood work great. Only one complaint: the pocket on the inside is nearly impossible to reach with the bag zipped all they way up.

I've taken my Phantom 15 on two week long backpacking trips through the Yosemite backcountry and could not have been more satisfied. Not only it this bag lightweight and very compact, it is super warm. One morning while camping in Lyle Valley, I peeked outside my tent to find my boots frosted over, but I kept warm and toasty! The 3/4 zipper gets some getting used to, but it is worth the weight savings. I have had no problems with moisture. The shell of the bag does quite a good job repelling water. Put this bag at the top of your shopping list!

i went on 3 days and 2 nights camping trip by the coast here in California in April. the temp dropped around mid 30 at night, but the sleeping bag kept me warm the whole night. its true that u have to unzip the zipper once or twice during the night because it can get very hot inside the bag. the only negative side is that, when it get moist at night, and the moist touches the bag, u can tell that it can penetrate through the outer layer very easily and can potentially ruined the bag someday. the first bag i got i had to return it back due to the fluffs leaking through the seems one after another, and had to get an exchange. that was my first trip so far, but we'll how long this bag will last.

hi, i used this sleeping bag at Ixtaccihuatl volcano in Mexico, its really compact and light, you feel warm and comfortable, and i don't need to use extra clothes, so my backpack was lighter than ever, it's a very very good gear, thanks.

I used this bag quite extensively in the Colorado Rockies and in China. First, this bag packs to a phenomenal size and great weight. This bag will definitely keep you warm when you need it, just stay cozy. It saves a great deal of space when packing your gear. Some dislikes are that the down comes out occasionally. The shell is thin, so don't get it wet. Due to its lightweight, it doesn't insulate against the cold ground too well. Make sure you use some kind of sleeping pad to insulate well. SIze, I'm 5'11 and got a regular size. No problem there.

Overall this bag is awesome. I was comfortably warm down to 18 degrees (with sleeping pad). There is plenty of room in the leg and foot area. It compresses down to nearly nothing, the draft collar is awesome. The inside pocket is nice too. My only complaint is the room in the shoulder/chest area. It was slightly restrictive, but to be somewhat expected from a cold weather mummy bag. Again, not a big deal just something to keep in mind.

Just upgraded to the Phantom from a 600-fill bag. What an amazing difference 800-fill makes--I'm never going back to 600-fill. And of course always I really like the top-quality Mountain Hardwear construction. This is a comfortable bag and I trust it a lot. I guess my only real disappointment is the lack of exterior hang loops and the fact it didn't come in a peaceful dark blue color...

I've used the Mountain Hardwear Phantom 15 in temps down to 20, and have always been comfortable with just lightweight long underwear. The inside also feels very nice and stays comfortable during the night. The footbox is nice, and the zipper doesn't catch very often.

I just used this bag for 6 weeks straight while backpacking through the high sierra this summer (2004), above 10,000 feet most of the time experiencing nighttime temperatures between about 25 and 55 degrees F or so (guesstimate). I absolutely loved it. I am a 5'-4" 125 lb female and tend to get a bit cold easily. I never even had to cinch down the hood or draft collar. A bonus worth mentioning is that they make a small size, which fits me perfectly in length and has enough space around the torso that you don't feel clausterphobic (they also make a regular and long, I believe). It packs really really small and is unbelievably light. It is less than half the weight of my previous down bag that I used for 14 years. A possible down side is that part of the reason it is so light is the fabric. We were in a 3-season tent every night, so the sleeping bag was not subjected to much abrasion. It seems very thin, not like something you'd want to be dragging around in rocks and twigs, but then again I didn't test it. It could very well be quite strong fabric but is SEEMS thin. Also, I did notice that feathers seem to pop thru more frequently than they did with my old bag. On the positive side, the internal draft collar is cozy, and the draft tube along the zipper has a nice thick fabric strip along it so the zipper doesn't catch on it. Highly recommended if you are looking for an ultralight warm bag.

The Phantom is way compactable and warm. I spent a couple weeks in Alaska with it and it was plenty of insulation, but I also love it in warmer weather in Utah. Great versatility. The only problem I have with it is the 3/4 zip. It makes the bag a little annoying to get in and out. Other than that, it's a great bag.

Usage: WA Cascades. So far three overnights with temps about 25-35.
Opinion: Warm and toasty. Draft tube along the zipper is great; draft collar works well too. Fabric seems to be a bit tougher than other ultra-lightweight bags. Bit wider than I would like (165lb, 6'2" male). Compresses to about 6x6" with a compression sack.

This has been my only bag for five years, and it rocks.

It compresses down small, is SUB TWO POUNDS!!, and has always kept me warm. Despite the light weight, it has proved durable and has withstood trips to Ecuador, the Cascades, many, many climbing trips in the southwest, and it has fully proven to be worth the price.

Love the Phantom! Haven't had a cold night in my 15degree even though i've slept in it close to 0d. I'm 5'8" and 160lbs and it fits my great. Packs up small and its very lightweight.

I am 6' 180 and the reg fits me fine. Some say it is narrow, price you pay not to carry 3-4 lbs. Anonymous in Heavenly Phantom complained about weight. A Pinnicle weighs over 1/2 lb MORE! Bag was warm to mid teens without layers for me.
