The Mountain Hardwear Men’s Offwidth Softshell Jacket includes underarm gussets and stretch panels to ensure total freedom of movement for your day in the hills. A blend of nylon, polyester, and elastane gives the entire Offwidth Jacket mechanical stretch as well. Getting the idea yet? Mountain Hardwear also added drawstrings at the hem and collar as well as closable cuffs to seal out all the wind and snow.

Bottom Line: Stretchy.

Pretty good, odd fit though...

By:
October 2, 2011

I'm 6ft, 1in, 230 lbs. I have a 36.8 in arm length so it's tricky buying XL coats at times. The arm length is fine but the jacket itself is a little snug in the shoulders. Plus, this jacket is not long. It stops at my waist just around my belt. The jacket is very light, but due to it's snug fit you can't wear too much under it besides a long-sleeve/ long-underwear shirt. Basically, it's a high-end wind breaker with no hood.

12345. It is a lighter weight softshell than the Android and a bit more stretchy. This is due to the fact that the Android fabric is backed with fleece for warmth and the Offwith fabric is simply brushed and not bonded to fleece. I hope this info helps!

Great all-around soft shell

By:
April 11, 2010

I have used this jacket ice climbing, hiking, and mountain biking. It's really breatheable and is wind and water resistant, and is tough as nails! Regulates body heat better than thicker (warmer) softshells I've seen, because it is a bit more air permeable. It has a performance/alpine fit and will stretch nicely as well. I'm a 41 chest and wear a Large, while accomodating a base layer and light fleece. This is my "go to" soft shell for everything.

Matty. The Onata Softshell is a little bit lighter in weight than the Offwidth Softshell. That is the main difference and it is due to a slight variation in the fabric. The back of the Offwidth Jacket fabric is lightly brushed making for a little bit warmer of a jacket overall. I hope this info helps!

Great jacket! Nice, trim athletic fit; lots of nice touches (tall neck w/ microfleece and bungee to tighten things down against the wind); fits well, feels good, stretchy fabric, reasonably wind resistant yet breathable, longer in back to keep your back and kidneys warm. Highly recommended, esp. for the price!

Fit? Can someone please help me with the fit of MH? I am 6', 210 lbs with broad shoulders. In buying my first softshell in several years I can't find one that fits. My problem is that for Columbia Interchange products an XL is too big in the body. So I tried a Marker - same deal; large too snug, XL too baggy. Then I went to TNF and bought a large Apex - too small. Please help me before I do this again and buy a MH product in the wrong size. Can't find them in stock anywhere to try on. I guess I'm a tweener? Since the Columbia folks own/make MH can I assume that the fit/cut is the same? Any advice is appreciated

Yeah, I think I would go with an XL. I'm 6ft 185 and the large fits me perfect. The cut on the Offwidth is so trim that I think the Large would be way too tight!

Sort of a different animal in terms of the look, function, and material, but a more slender torso cut is the MHW Alchemy (item# MHW 0678). You might find that the XL gives you a better fit.

Snazzy Jacket

December 25, 2010

Love this jacket. Someone is always asking about it. Material makes me feel indestructable. Blocks most wind and works well with a base and a mid layer.
Went for a day hike in Prince William Forest Park and this worked wonderfully. The temperature was around 50F all day and a base layer was all I needed. Breathed well so I didn't overheat.

I'm looking for a light softshell and I'm deciding between this jacket and the Patagonia Men's Simple Guide. xtekian. They are very similar jackets albeit slightly different in weight and fabric. The fabric that we use in the Mountain Hardwear Offwidth is called TuffStretch and is composed of 58% Nylon, 31% Polyester, and 11% Elastane. It is a 4-way stretch double weave fabric which has a durable tightly woven nylon face coupled with soft wicking polyester loops on the inside. This extremely tough fabric combo is topped off with a durable water repellent finish. In contrast, the Patagonia piece is made with 91% Recycled Polyester and 9% Spandex. The Patagonia Jacket weighs approximately 365 grams and the Offwidth Jacket weighs 571 grams. Due to the fabric combo and slight weight difference I would say the Hardwear Jacket will probably be more durable and slightly warmer that the Patagonia Jacket in the long run. I hope this comparison helps!

Superb Lightweight Softshell!

By:
August 15, 2011

I got this same jacket about a year ago here at a super sale price. My son outgrew his OR softshell jacket, so I got him this jacket to replace it. Besides the 2 zippered handwarmer pockets and zippered Naploleon chest pocket, there is an open pouch pocket inside to store a water bottle or a hat and gloves. This is a well made and very durable softshell. It has a trim athletic cut, and is just right to wear in mild Fall, Spring, and even cool Summer days.
For colder weather or Winter use, you can add a heavy weight long underwear top or a 100 weight fleece shirt underneath it. If it is colder than that, you can easily add an insulated jacket or vest over the top of this jacket for additional warmth. It is raining hard today and in the low 60s, so I am wearing my Off Width Jacket while I write this!

How does this jacket compare to the microchill jacket, also by MHW? I am looking for a packable jacket to take with me on a trip to Europe (Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany) through all of September. I have a MHW Cohesion jacket (waterproof shell) that I'm taking, so I'm just looking for something for chilly mornings or in the Swiss highlands. I'm thinking either this, the Microchill (jacket or pullover,) or a TNF TKA 100 1/4 zip. I am just packing a few merino shirts, no long sleeves and the average temps will be 50-ish to high 70s (F).

John. The Offwidth Jacket is a fairly lightweight and stretchy air permeable softshell Jacket. The MircoChill Jacket is a 100wt. fleece jacket. The Offwidth is a great outer layer for mildly chilly days on its own and will keep a little weather off as it is water resistant. When layered with a MicroChill Jacket the Offwidth would work well for even colder temps. Hope this info helps!

MH Offwidth softshell

By:
August 6, 2011

Great all round jacket for cool days, on it's own or layered. Fit is like most MH clothing, tight if your between sizes - so go up a size (ie L => xL). Looks are reserved, so you can wear out on the town or as intended in the mountains. Wind protection is ok, and it seem to reject most rain/mist. It's my new go to jacket in 30 -50°F weather.

It looks in the picture like MHardwear has made this jacket a bit longer recently. Are my eyes deceiving me? I love the material and versatility of the Offwidth but the one I bought 2 years ago only came to just below the belt and a t-shirt underneath would invariably hang past the jacket, which make the Offwidth awkward to wear around town. Did they change it up this year?

Nice versatile soft-shell

By:
June 29, 2011

This jacket is fairly light-weight and easily a top choice for whatever your endeavors, be it climbing, mtn biking, traveling, etc. The material has a good bit of stretch built into it, making it pretty comfortable. At the same time, the material is also pretty durable and a snag on the rock face or a fall off a bike at speeds leaves the jacket looking like nothing ever happened to it. The jacket has an athletic cut and a size SMALL fits me pretty well, not overly fitted, or baggier than you'd want. For descriptive purposes, I'm 5'4" with a pretty short upper body. Suit jacket size 38S (37.5 chest) with a 31.5 sleeve. The jacket's backlength measures 25.5 inches from the base of the collar to the hem, and sizing is consistent with other smalls in this model. The sleeves run just a little pass my wrists, ensuring that my entire forearm stays covered when reaching for that next handhold. Styling wise, you'd be a walking MH advertisement when wearing this jacket. The stock photo above already shows 4 MH logos, and then there's another nut logo on the back just under the collar, and mine came with a nut logo on the left shoulder as well. A previous reviewer commented on how the zippers tend to stick out, but this can easily be fixed by just tucking them in with a bit of finesse. All in all, a great jacket that can be worn all year depending on your layering needs.

Great Jacket and a Great Price!

By:
January 25, 2010

This is a great jacket---almost the perfect lightweight softshell that I was looking for. My son, the snowboarding college student, has "acquired" my Mountain Hardwear Alchemy jacket that I bought here last year. So, I had been looking for a replacement jacket, but this time in a more versatile lightweight version. The Offwidth jacket fills the bill.

The material is tough enough to stand up to abrasions, yet still stretch when you move. It turns back the drizzle and light rain, and stops most of the wind. It is not totally windproof, light a Gore Windstopper equipped model, but does enough of the job that you shouldn't need another layer for winds 25 MPH or less.

My only complaint would be on the fit. True, it did say "athletic fit" in the advertisement. But this jacket fits much more closely to the body than my Alchemy jacket ever did. I got both jackets in XXL. I was able to wear a PowerStretch jacket under my Alchemy. I will have to drop several pounds before I could try that with this jacket. But, now I am more motivated to keep working out and stick to my diet! My son will not be getting this jacket so easily.

Keep in mind that this is a light weight jacket, While the Alchemy alone kept me warm to 20 degrees F or so with just a mid-weight long underwear top, this Offwidth jacket is best suited to 35 degrees F or better with the same top. If I was snowshoeing or crosscountry skiing at a fast pace, then I can stay warm with the Offwidth jacket to about 25 degrees F. When I stop or slow down, I need to pull out my Primaloft vest or pullover.

Still a great jacket, and I hope to get 3 season use out of this model. The Alchemy was just too warm for anything but winter use here in New Hampshire.

The Offwidth Jacket is an air-permeable softshell meaning air travels through the fabric both in and out pretty easily. So, I would call it wind resistant and not windproof. This jacket is often used during high output activities because of this fact! Hope this helps.

A Close Second

By:
March 1, 2011

I've been looking for a lightweight softshell that doesn't break the bank for spring/early summer treks, and potentially for hiking across South America this summer. I wound up trying both the MH Offwidth Jacket and Patagonia Simple Guide. I'm fairly small (5'7, 34" chest) and ended up getting the MH in Small and Patagonia in XS.

Fit: Both jackets are sized nearly identically - same hem width, back length, armpit-to-armpit width (20" armpit-to armpit, 19" hem width). The Simple Guide has 1" longer sleeves and a slightly tighter bicep area. When worn, both expectedly fit the same, with a fairly athletic cut and room for a fleece layer but not much more.

Features: Once again, nearly the same features: 3 pockets, hem drawcord, velcro cuffs. The Offwidth has a neck drawcord. The Offwidth has a slightly heavier soft shell material and as a result weighs about 4oz more than the Simple Guide.

Material: The jackets differ mostly here, with the Offwidth having a slightly thicker, more windproof softshell than the Simple Guide. The texture of the Offwidth is thicker as well. Both have tons of stretch and do not have a fleece backing or membrane. The fabric of the Simple Guide is much more breathable -- probably the most breathable soft shell I've owned -- and is less crinkly and falls more naturally when wearing (think silk scarf).

Styling: I love MH but one thing they need to work on is the styling. I would not wear the Offwidth around town -- it has loud, white Mountain Hardwear logos on the chest, sleeve, and even on the velcro cuffs. Even worse, the zippers stick out at a weird angle to the front AND to the side of the jacket due to the construction of the zippers -- WHY MH WHY?? In contrast, the Simple Guide just oozes with style with an understated logo on the chest and tasteful zipper drawers. There is no comparison here really, the Simple Guide wins hands down.

In the end, I found that both jackets had a nearly identical feature set, and both clock in at $120 retail. I sided with the Simple Guide primarily because the soft shell material was lighter and more breathable, which is what I'm looking for during spring and summer. Also the styling may be a deal breaker for some, for me I spend 95% of my time NOT hiking so this was a factor as well.

Light, Comfy - perfect for Spring!

By:
May 20, 2011

I love this jacket! It's lightweight and easy to stuff into my bag, but heavy enough to keep warm into the 30's to 50's. It is also light enough that I'm not sweating when I'm in the car, indoors, etc. It's great at blocking the wind, rain, etc. I thought it ran a little small when I tried one on at a retailer, so I got the next larger size and am very happy.

I have both - the MH is for warmer weather where you don't need so much warmth; NF better in colder weather. I'm 5'11', 170, large in MH is good. Medium in NF isn't enough for much layering, but on really cold days, you're going to need more than a softshell anyway. BTW - I love both jackets and would buy them again.

These two softshells are going to be similar. They are both general-use jackets, either for layer in colder weather or just wearing it alone in mild temperatures. They both are water resistant with a DWR coating and they are both stretchy materials. Either one is a good softshell to go with.

What I needed

By:
May 19, 2009

my needs were to fill the gap between full on storm days, and warm sun days, and this does it well. fully enclosed waist, wrist, and neck make this the perfect tool on powder days in the backcountry when i am working hard, and the temp is ~25+ degrees. it breathes well, and holds off the wind pretty well. i guess less than perfect wind blocking is the trade off for excellent breathability. as to rain it's good for 2 to 3 hours before it saturates. the other 2 drawbacks are the collar which is a little on the limp side, and being such a flexible, stretchy fabric it has a tendancy to hike up my back when i have my ski pack on. with a stiffer collar, and some way to keep it from hiking up my back i would give it 5 stars. it does the job well for a budget piece. you won't be disappointed.

I bought this jacket for my husband for Christmas. Although he typically wears a M, he could have used a L in this jacket. Per several other reviews, the fit is "tailored" and "athletic" which should have been my clue to order a larger size. Also, the quality was very nice, but I was looking for a winter weight softshell and this was more of a "windbreaker" style jacket. Very nice jacket but not what I was looking for.
