The campfire just doesn’t want to take, but you’re plenty warm while rummaging for extra matches thanks to your Mountain Hardwear Octans Fleece Jacket. Stash some extra newspaper in the hand-warmer pockets, and cinch down the one-handed adjustment cord if a breeze kicks up. A fleece-lined chin guard prevents unwanted chafe, so your chin isn’t raw when it’s dripping with s’more after you get the blaze going.
Bottom Line: A loyal companion in the backcountry.
I was given the Octans fleece for my birthday and have enjoyed wearing it so far. I have the sapphire color and it is a really nice blue. This is an excellent layering piece and is nice for wearing around the house or for casual use too.
The fit is athletic and runs small. I normally wear a L, but my Octans is a XL I'd describe the fleece weight as being approximately the same as a Polartec 200.

My new favorite lightweight fleece, it's perfect to wear casually to the gym or for busy outdoor activities. Compared to MH's Monkey Man fleece, the Octans is lighter and breathes better. However, both jackets work great underneath a shell when the winds pick up. Ive noticed no pilling after washing. Large, soft hand pockets are nice and the chest pocket is just right for a wallet, cell phone, car keys, etc. With just a lightweight, breathable shirt underneath, I noted only minor sweating after a three mile showshoe jaunt in the low 30's with a light breeze. Size large fits my 6' 2" 205 lb frame very well. Friends like it, the GF likes it, and I love it. Five stars.
My wife bought me this fleece and it is fantastic. Great feel and the fleece fabric looks really cool. We also bought my son one for his birthday and he really likes it.
This jacket is much more of an athletic sizing than any other MH product that I own. If in doubt I would size up.
I love this fleece for several reasons, but most of all because it fits. I'm 5-10, less than 140, and many times a Small is too big for me. Most companies don't even make extra smalls, so what am I supposed to do? At my age, second childhood should mean fun things like drooling on myself, acting immaturely with impunity, and ignoring/not hearing anything I don't like--not shopping in the Boys' Department for clothes that will fit me. What are clothes manufacturers doing when someone who's 5-10 is swimming in a Small? Enough of the rant, back to the MH Octans. It fits great. Works well over just a t-shirt, but I could slip something a little more substantial underneath if I had to. The sleeves are perfect. My arms are a little on the short side (but I am tall for my garment size) so if you have long arms, this fleece might not work for you. It keeps me reasonably warm and is reasonably soft (although the Arc'teryx Delta AR and MH Microgrid might beat it just a little on that score). The fabric on the shoulder might look like it's abrasion resistant, but it's actually a soft microfleece. Really, this fleece might look techy with the chest pocket, but I think it's more for casual wear (when the BC wordsmiths are talking about roasting marshmallows around the fire instead of scraping your knuckles on rocks, you get the picture...). The black is very sharp. I've tried on the green and the contrasting colors make me feel a little too much like a mallwalker for my taste. Just saw it on SAC so I'm trying a couple of more subdued colors. If it fits you, it really feels nice and it's likely to become one of your favorite garments.
I feel you on the sizing thing. I'm 5'9", 140ish pounds, and theoretically a medium according to most size charts. But even most smalls are too baggy on me, especially from companies with more generic fits like TNF and Columbia. I like a snug, athletic fit but that's virtually impossible to find except in the high-end outdoor gear brands. ANNOYING! ARGH!
Just got this jacket off S&C, like the guy below me. Seems like a pretty decent fleece. I like the nut pattern on the jacket, its unique. 6'0 & 150lbs and a large fits pretty great. I could've snugged into a medium if I needed. Haven't worn it in any weather really except to get the mail in a snowstorm. I think it'll be a nice spring/fall piece
I'm about 6'5" 180lbs and the large fits me perfect not sure how it compares to other MH gear so no comparisons there (if anybody knows could you let me know?). This fleece is pretty warm for how much it weighs and looks good too! I've been wearing it for a few months and I'll wear it down to about 35 comfortably with just a t-shirt. It's pretty tough as well. I was riding to class on my longboard about a week ago and took a spill on the concrete. My first thought was that I had tore it up but it held up pretty well, unlike my elbow.
Bottom line is I don't think I'll be replacing this till it falls apart which at this rate could take awhile.
Best fleece ever. I found this fleece on SAC for fifty some dollars! What a steal! The MH Octans has a very warm build and looks amazing. The main material on this jacket is a very "cool" looking hexagon design... very sharp. There are two internal pockets mirroring the outer waist pockets that were not advertised. I found this space very useful when hauling light gear. This Fleece is great in mild weather and when layered, adds a substantial amount of warmth. Great fleece for the price! I found the fit perfect and would recommend this buy.
Pros: Quality craftsmanship Dialed in fit on waist (34-35) and chest (41-42) 35" arm length just makes it with this jacket Sharp looking (did i really say that?) Feels warm The way the external pockets are sewn yields two "drop in" pockets on the inside
Cons: Too slim in the arms. I dont have "guns" per se but the slim cut arm and slightly stiff fabric made it an uncomfortable fit for me. I have other fleeces that are slim in the arm (pat r1, arc thermal pro) but are softer/more flexible so the slimness is not really an issue. Cuffs were a bit loose but nothing major.
I really wanted to keep it but have to send it back. Ordering a size up would just negate the dialed in fit of the waist and chest. Still a good piece just not for me.
I like this jacket a lot - the colors, the nice smooth zipper, the big handwarmer pockets, and especially the nice SAC price. Going by the size chart I ordered a 2XL (I'm 5'11" & 260lb, with a 51" chest & 40" waist), and I can gather in about 3" of material without it being skintight. I briefly considered returning it and picking up an XL instead but wasn't sure that an XL would allow for my typical layering underneath. That's what happens when you're on the border between 2 sizes, I guess.
The slightly below the waist length is nice because it doesn't stick out from under my usual shell or ride halfway up my back when I bend over. The arms are big enough to wear a sweater or heavier base & 2nd layers underneath without inhibiting movement or being confining. The zipper is great, nice and smooth and you don't have to pull straight along the line or risk a snag. I'm not sure whether I'd like to see wrist gaiters w/thumbholes or just thumb loops to keep the cuffs where they belong when donning a shell over the Octans. That's the closest thing to a "con" I can think of, once I'm able to get out and use it in the woods I'm sure my initial favorable opinion will only become more favorable.
I also got one of these off SAC. Very nice jacket. I am a BIG fan of Mountain Hardwear and this does not disappoint. It is cut trim and athletic and works great layered under my MH parka. And my girlfriend thinks it's cool!
Just got this from S&C. It is super comfortable and seems quite warm for its weight. I'm 6' 185lbs and the large fits me perfectly. If you are borderline on a size, I would recommend getting the bigger size. Overall, this is a great lightweight fleece, although I don't think I would pay full price for it.
I love MHW gear. This is a great fleece for the price. The Hex Pattern has a great look and the cut is a nice athletic fit. I am 5'9" 175lbs and the Large fits well. Good for around the town or a nice hike. I use it as a mid layer for snowboarding.
