Trail protection in a Nut Shell.
The Mountain Hardwear Nut Shell High Gaiter gives you durable water resistance and protection from rocks, snow, and other trail debris. These gaiters feature a 420D nylon packcloth shell that’s tough, lightweight, and ideally suited for trekking, backpacking, or brushy day hikes. A hook-and-loop front closure, an under-arch boot strap, and a ladder-lock up top keep the Nut Shell secure, while a top cinch drawcord seals out snow when you’re postholing through late-season drifts.

- Q & A
Snow and brush approved
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
Excellent for snow and brush however not waterproof or water resistant to the level I like.
Keeps your feet dry!
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I got these gaiters for those early season backpacking trips where you have to cross snow and ford small streams that run high in the early part of the backpacking season. I have post holed to my knees and wadded running streams in mine. Never once having anything get wet. You are going to want a Goretex boot if you are stream crossing. These add that coverage to where the boot stops. I would cross quick these streams quick so I never stood in deeper water than ankle deep for long periods of time in them. Light to pack in, easy on and off. The lace they give you is a lot stronger than you think. Great gaiters for early season alpine where you are looking to stay warm and dry when you get to your destination.
Tightens the top to your leg.
Almost knee down with the XL's. Look good. Will try them out in September while doing some land clearing. Keep the snakes from biting and the mosquitoes confused. If lucky, they will get their chance in the snow by November.... Not breathable at all. The inside of these gaiters is soaking wet after taking them off. Probably due to the nonbreathable waterproofing interior as shown in the image below.
I don't mind. I like the product for what it does do.
Ample Room (XL)
This unit had ample room to fit over my Insulated Carhartt Cover-all. The Top Cinch Draw Cord could have been made of a stronger material, but I do like the idea of the replaceable under the-arch Boot Strap. I do wear The Gaiter during and after a rain/snow storm to keep my pant legs dry and also when I'm using my chain-saw to keep the saw dust out my hiking boots and off my lower pant legs....
