Never a useless lump of soggy feathers.

For years, down has been known for two things—unparalleled warmth when dry and complete uselessness when wet. Mountain Hardwear solves the saturation issue with its water-resistant down, used in the Men's Nitrous Vest. Incredibly lightweight and packable, the Nitrous will serve as your go-to layering piece for your next hike or your next ski vacation.

The Nitrous vest's face fabric is tough 30D nylon ripstop fabric. This wind-resistant fabric is soft and smooth to make layering easy. Mountain Hardwear then insulated the vest with its Q.Shield 800-fill water-resistant down. The down fibers are permanently infused with a water-repellant, so it maintains its loft and its insulating properties when wet. The Nitrous' dual hem drawcords seal out drafts to keep you warm in high winds, and the jacket stuffs into its own pocket for the minimum possible pack size when not in use.

Nothing special, but pretty cool

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: Runs large

Nothing really excited me about this vest. The down fill (not to be confused with fill-power) seemed a little light to me; the vest was thinner than expected. I'm 6'2" 175 (one good day) and usually go with Larges in most things. For example I have a Large in the Patagonia Down Sweater Vest. However, Large in this vest was much to big for me.

If you're looking for an 800-fill down vest, I would have to recommend the Patagonia down sweater vest.

However this was given as a gift to someone who is a bit bigger around than myself and he absolutely loved it. So four stars it is and just be weary that it is not a slim fit.

Not what I expected

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

Yes, it is warm and it is a vest, but the design with the stiff zipper bulges out around the stomach and is much slimmer on top. I bet its functional, but I don't like the way it sits

Party Down with MH Down- you'll love it

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got this vest after it was recommended to me by a gearhead, and boy I have not regretted it. When it's too warm out to wear my Marmot soft shell but too cold to wear my Marmot DriClime by itself, this thing is perfect. The very first time I wore it it was 28 degrees out and snowing. I wore only a smart wool base layer underneath and looked at the glittering snow flakes dropping from the sky and said aloud, "Yup, I'm wheeling to Trader Joe's. It's only 6 blocks." Wheel I did. Flew actually is a more appropriate verb. This vest is awesome!

My first 'Puffy' vest

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Ive always used fleece vests due to their versatility and durability, but finally decided to get something a little lighter weight for use as a ski layering piece. On colder stormy days, where Ill be doing some hike-to access, Ill wear a base layer, a Cap 3 top, and this under a shell, and be perfectly warm. Similar days just lapping chairs, Ill add a wicking flannel and be perfectly toasty. Fairly durable for a thinner material, and wears well at the bar as well!

Does anyone know if this has a drawstring...
