Freezing winds blast you as you clear the shoulder ridges of the Tetons, and you never know when those crystal blue skies will turn to snow if a storm races up the canyon. The Mountain Hardwear Mountain Monkey Tech Fleece Jacket adds serious science to soft, warm fleece to shield you from cold air, light moisture, and wind. AirShield Elite membrane blocks wind and repels moisture while remaining highly breathable. Plus, unlike most membranes which require sweat and water vapor to build up before they can escape, this barrier is air permeable so it's breathes from the second you put it on.

The Deflection softshell panels under the arms are flexible so you don't feel tied down by fabric when you're on the move. Wrist gaiters and dual hem drawcords seal out the cold, and a full-zip front allows you to vent buildup heat when you're pushing hard and working up a sweat.

  • AirShield Elite membrane
  • Deflection softshell side panels
  • Wrist gaiters
  • Zippered hand-warmer pockets and chest pocket

Great Fleece!

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:True to size

I had not read any reviews on this jacket so i took a chance and ordered it. First of all I am 5'11'' 185lbs with a muscular build and the large fit me perfect. Jacket comes down to mid hip, and the sleeve length fits with just enough length. Wind is eliminated with this jacket, and it is comfortable in a 60 degree wind and breathable so you don't get hot. Yet to test it in the cold yet, but could not be happier with the quality of the manufacturing, and the fit and feel. I will be taking this jacket to Mt.Whitney in mid june and will update this review after.

Does the monkey tech fit like a typical fleece or is it more like a jacket fit (ie Pata R4)? I want to use it on a cross-country drive where I will have a variety of weather. I want to layer it under a down sweater in the cold but I like to leave it on in the car (if it's not too warm) and I'd like the choice to wear it alone on stops to if it's not too cold out (but the wind can make that impossible, without wind proof/resistant).

One more question - what is the advantage of this fleece versus the Mountain Hardwear Tech Jacket? Both seem to be made of similar material but the Tech Jacket has more softshell and features like pit-zips.

Why would one choose this jacket over the Tech Jacket?

You are right. There aren't that many differences between the Mountain Hardwear Mountain Monkey Tech Fleece Jacket and the Mountain Tech Jacket. The main differences are pit zips, wear resistant paneling, and different zipper locations in the Mountain Tech. On a personal note: A got the Mountain Tech years ago back when it first cam out as the Windstopper Tech jacket. Back then it was the latest and greatest. Now I think there are better options out there including the Monkey Tech which I also think looks better.

I have a couple of questions about this jacket.

Is the body of this jacket made of fleece or soft shell material?

Does this jacket have pit zips?

The main body is fleece, with soft-shell for the side panels. The soft-shell is supposed to breathe well enough that there are no pit zips.
