For primates who explore the backcountry in the winter, the Mountain Hardwear Monkey Woman Jacket offers plush warmth and a level of breathability that's difficult to beat. High loft Monkey Phur fleece gives this jacket a rich texture, while its noticeably open structure lets air in and out at a much better rate than your typical fleece. You'll get up that mountain much quicker if you don't have to stop and strip layers every few minutes. At a slight 15oz, the Monkey Woman gives you tons of warmth at a fractional weight. Power stretch cuffs, wrist panel, and waist make your range of motion more complete.
Bottom Line: The Mountain Hardwear Monkey Women Jacket's high-loft fleece makes it a little less Jane of the Jungle and a little more Meg of the Mountain.
Got this for my lady friend at the time. She seemed very happy with it, and it was warm. I did wear it once. Surprisingly, it didn't hold smell (smoke) as much as I thought which was good. Nice looking girl cut too.
Bought this jacket a few years back, and it's still looking as new. I only wear it in winter, as it's too hot for any other season. The monkey fur really keeps me warm, warmer than other heavyweight polartec fleece. And I love the soft wrist band which is standard on all MH jackets. I'm not sure what all the problem with the matting is all about as indicated in other reviews, but I've never had any problems, and I've washed it maybe only twice. But I do have an earlier edition jacket, and maybe the quality has gone down. The Mountain Hardwear website does tell you what to do in case of matting: you need to brush it like brushing a dog. Go here for more instructions: http://mountainhardwear.com/images/CareForMonkey.pdf Oh and I'm so excited that they brought back the kermit green color! (BC doesn't have it yet, but REI does have it right now.)
I got one a little too small and it was difficult to get long sleeves to not bunch up... so I would go the extra size anyways. If anything, it provides a little more cuddle room. Plus, when I'm backpacking I use my Monkey Phur to double as a pillow... which works splendid... so the more the merrier

This fleece is definitely amazing and versatile enough to last through different climates. I used it in the evenings sea kayaking and on the mountains in single digit weather. It provided a comfortable layer and is super light for backpacking. The only down side is that the sides on the lower back are a different, stretchy material and wind goes right through them. With wind protection on top, this fleece is incredible!
This fleece is awesome! I got it for my mom for Christmas, and I haven't seen her without it all winter! The sleeves are extra long, and I like the stretch material at the cuff that keeps snow from getting in your sleeves. The only downside to this jacket, is that I'm not crazy about the colors that are available. I went with a North Face fleece in a nice sunny yellow.
Completely Agree... I am from Michigan Tech in the Upper Peninsula of MI and I never take it off! It's been like a signature thing that people laugh about with me. They tell me that they're not sure anymore whether or not it's my real hair! :S Though for women, I wouldn't take that joke to seriously...
Honestly though, there hasn't been a better thermal coat than this... doesn't cut wind though... I use my MHW rain shell to cut the wind and waterproof me. It is the PERFECT light weight combination!
I just got this jacket for Christmas. How do other owners recommend washing it? I saw one review where it said it kinda of ruined the jacket and I don't want to do that. Tag says to Machine Wash Cold and Line Dry. No Dry Cleaning. Do other handwash? Can I throw it in the dryer? It seems like that would help the fluffiness stay? Any advice is much appreciated!
I would highly recommend not putting it in the dryer. I did that with mine and it matted the fluff and made it nappy looking. You can wash it as often as you want, but don't put it in the dryer. catiecoo: check out the official care guide by MH on their website: http://mountainhardwear.com/images/CareForMonkey.pdf"Machine wash cold. Line dry". And brush it like a dog, it'll solve the matting problem.
I have the Spring 2007 version of this jacket. The Fall 2007 is a little bit different..the fleece material is silkier. I absolutely LOVE my jacket. It is so warm. I have a million fleeces, and none of them are as warm as this one. However, DO NOT PUT IT IN THE DRYER!! I made this mistake, & my favorite fleece is now way too small. It shrunk up a ton & looks goofy now. I still wear it though. Too comfortable to not wear it.
i looked at the tag on this jacket at a store and it said that this fleece had windstopper in it but all the reviews on this jacket have said that it definitely is not windproof. so what's the deal?
It is a very good looking jacket and on everyone else it looks great (I got one for my mom and my mother-in-law and they look great in them). I am pretty tall and slim (i.e not well endowed in the chest region) consequently, the small was too short in the torso, the medium too big in the chest and too short in the arms. Ironically enough I am too much of a monkey to actually pull this jacket off like the rest of women who look so good in it!
This jacket is great, however just with a windproof shell overnearth. It's not windproof. In fact it's less windproof than a plain wool overcoat.. However with the shell it's definitely warm!
This fleece is so soft and warm, but not windproof. It is a bit bulky. I washed it and kind of ruined it, its not fluffy at all now. Great jacket, just don't ruin it in the wash (or dryer, I donno what I did to it).
I bought this jacket for my girl friend and she loved it at first because it was so soft, but then after a few months of regular ware, the soft fuzz stated to mat together and become less soft, but still wearable. Still a good jacket, but know that the super soft feeling of the fleece doesn't last long.
This jacket is the warmest fleece you'll ever buy! It is much warmer than you think, folks! With this jacket and a polypro shirt you'll stay warm outside all day. Highly recommended, but girls, it runs BIG! You can get away with a size smaller than you need.
This is a great buy. I got so many compliments on this jacket. Its warmer, softer, and better-looking than The North Face fleece I bought last year. I'm planning on getting another one in a different color for this next winter.
I have a Mountain Hardware shell w/ monkey fleece on the collar and inside back. Will this zip together with the shell? Are the shells universal with all M.H. jackets?
I and my wife have both zipped in a few different MH jackets in to our MH shells without a problem. However there are no compatible loops to clip the inner jacket into the sleeves. As far as the zipper's go though they do zip in. So it will work just not exactly made for it.
i had an old-style patagonia r2 that i loved to death. was looking for a replacement-something soft and cozy and warm for camping, skiing, plane rides. i tried some other fleeces which were too thin (including the newer patagonia r2), and some with windproofing, which were too stiff and made me sweat easily. i love this coat and have been wearing in almost non-stop since i bought it. i am an "always cold" person and it keeps me warm and comfortable without overheating whether i'm sitting around indoors or out hiking.
I returned this because I thought the fit was rather masculine. The shoulders are boxy and it sits narrow on the hips. The fleece material reminded me of shag carpet (seriously). It is rather bulky for layering. I'm sure it would be perfect when worn as a jacket on a chilly fall day.
This is a great little jacket. Warm, cuddly. The XS was too short in sleeves and waist so traded it for the S. I'm just under 5' 3", 102-106 lbs. petite and I'm usually always cold even in 60 degree weather. Not with this little baby. I wore a T-shirt under it today and yesterday 55-60 degree weather and was warm and toasty. I love this jacket and want it in more colours!
I am picky about jackets and since I have broad shoulders and a little waist I'm always a little nervous about fit. I'm 5'1'', 120lbs, and the small fits well. The jacket is super soft and a good excuse to get a few extra hugs. Its also warmer than a normal fleece but not extremely windproof.
Hello. I am an XL and some people are saying it's roomy, but others are saying that it's roomy. I want to know te truth because if i get it and it doesnt fit i will totally be disraught! help!!
So you're trying to differentiate between "roomy" and "roomy". Check the sizing chart. Also, if you get it and it doesn't fit, don't totally be distraught. That's unreasonable. Just return it (full refund, maybe $7 for return shipping) and get another one.
I thought I would love this but turns out I did not. I'm 5'8 and pretty broad shoulders and I felt like this literally made me look like a monkey. It looked too casual and furry for my taste. Back to Backcountry.
I am 5'7" and 135 lbs. The medium is perfect. I love this jacket! The MonkeyPhur is so soft and comfy and the fit is perfect.
One of my best friends tried on my jacket and two weeks later her husband called me to order one for her....she had been raving about it so much! So we did. She's about 5'4" 125 pounds and we got her a medium too. Happy!
Can't say enough good things about this....kind of wish I had several in all different colors!
When will you get new sizes in? I am looking for the fresh blue in a small. Also, do you still carry the green. I realized it is not on your list of colors but I ADORE the color of it and would like to purches it if posible(also in a small).
Bought the xs for my girlfriend who is 5'3-5'4 115-120lbs, was a little tight in the chest. Would be good if you want to use this strictly as a technical midlayer beneath a light baselayer, exchanged for a small...fit is relaxed, but still has a slightly fitted look and will layer well. Other than that, she loves the jacket and the soft fleece. Backcountry was great with the return.
This fleece is incredibly soft; you will want to wear it to bed! I am 5'10 and slim. I bought a medium and was very happy with the fit because it was slimmer than other fleeces I have purchased in the past but still long enough for me.
The softest jacket I've purchased yet. I love the way it fits and it so comfortable I almost don't want to take it off. It's great for evenings in my chilly town in Idaho. I am 5'5" and medium sized...the medium is true to size and fits great. I think you could layer this jacket easily.
I bought this jacket for my wife after I tried the men's. I luv the Monkey Fur. She luv's hers. It's much warmer than a fleece, and it does protect one from the wind much better than expected. I use it for climbing, skiing, and casual wear around town. In stronger winds I throw a Windstopper/Rain jacket over it and I'm golden. I don't understand what people are complaining about, but you do have to pay attention to the care label. The only problem I had was trying to hand pick the dry grass and seeds out of it after laying on the ground.
I have many fleece jackets and this one is the best. It is VERY warm, and I am usually cold but not in this one. The real reason I bought it was that it actually fit me. Most women's clothing doesn't fit me because I have monkey arms :) I am 5'10" with a long torso and this fleece is long enough in the arms and body. I washed mine and hung to dry and no problems with matting. Got the green grasshopper one and it rocks. Buy one even though you don't need another fleece.....
I bought this fleece for my girlfriend and wow did I win some serious brownie points. She loves it and raves about it all the time. She says it is super warm and very cosy, it is currently her favorite in the worlds largest collection of fleece. The only downside is that it is in no way windproof at all. So, know that it is an isulation layer, and it is great for wearing around the house on cold days. My girlfriends has been washed a number of times and we havent noticed any "clumping" we dry it on low heat. Maybe that will help. Overall this is a sweet fleece and will look for more on sale.
What size/color are you looking for. I know they're expecting another shipment, well they were expecting it a couple of days ago so it should be up on the site anytime.Hope that helps.
I have been looking at this jacket for a while and finally bought it. When i first received it, I tried it on. First impression: fits great, very soft. But, d/t the "lightness" of the jacket, I couldn't imagine that it would be very warm. So, I actually had planned on returning it. Then the mornings here in Denver have been nice & cold, and I started wearing while walking the dog @ 5am. Boy, was I wrong. It is very warm & snuggly. All the reviews that you read re: the warmth to weight ratio are true. It will work great under a hard shell during winter sports. Definitely not wind resistant and I have a feeling and won't handle moisture at all. But for dry, cold days, it will be great. Oh, and LOVE the artichoke color.
If you want a trendy jacket - this is your bet. If you want a useful, windproof jacket - this is NOT what you want. I got it in February, and I've got to say - it's time for me to get a new jacket. This jacket matted up on the lower back and between the elbow and wrist very badly. Recently, my mom has started telling me that it needs to be washed, but I wash it fairly regularly (it washes pretty well in cold if you hang dry it afterward) - so that's frustrating. As an active college student on a super limited budget, it wasn't worth the money. The quality of the jacket was not reflected in the price that I paid. Should have probably spent the extra $50 on a Patagonia.
Probably. Stuff's usually out of stock for no more than a week or so.They were expecting a shipment 2 days ago so check the website over the next couple of days. They should be up anytime!
and great style and fit, to boot. If only it was waterproof, it'd be perfect! While snow sticks to it like a magnet, it makes a great layer under a shell. But reserve that for the coldest days because this fleece is so warm, you'll be scrambling for pit zips in no time. I've cross country skied at 5 below with this and two layers under it and been incredibly comfortable. For alpine, it's warm enough on its own down to the mid-teens. Pair it with the Monkey fleece gloves and you'll be styling, warm, and very, very happy. Lightweight and non-binding, it'll soon be your favorite. Say "YES" to freedom of movement! Just remember it's not happy when wet. Keep your phur dry and you'll never be warmer.
I absoluetly LOVE the monkey phur, it's really warm and versatile for every season. I can even wear it in the dead of winter here in Virginia with a long sleeve shirt/sweater on beneath it. I love the way it looks, very stylish and cute...very different from everyone wearing The North Face jackets! Definitely recommend!!!
I got this yesterday and wore it to the office. the guys think i look like a Yeti. mainly because i got the light blue one and my buddies are not cool like me. i think it runs kinda big. i'm between M/L and i got a medium. i have extra room for layering. this is just what i wanted. I haven't tried it camping in the cold yet but i'm sure it will be nice with a shell to kill the wind.
okay im 5'6 or 5'7 and i weigh 105 so im skinny but kinda tall. and i have a small chest. so what size should i get? im worried that an xs would be to short and that a small would be to big in the chest and stomach.. what do yall think?
Runs VERY small! My daughter loves the jacket, just had to get a larger size than ususal. Definitely will shop w/ Backcountry every chance I get and have recommended it to many friends.
I bought this jacet for my daughter who is a junior in college. It was just perfect. The jacket is really soft and very warm while still being lighter weight. The fit was true to size and she just loves it!! In addition, the customer service at this site is superior! I love the online chat.
I couldn't disagree more with Elizabeth's comment...I ski patrol in WV - last weekend when we opened the mountain it was -4 (air temp, not with windchill) - i had on a polypro shirt, this fleece and my hardshell and I was almost too hot. That evening when it was even colder, I wore this out to dinner as my only jacket and was toasty. If you want a really warm jacket this is the best you'll find. So, as far as functionality goes, skiing at the top of a mountain in negative degree weather and staying warm is as functional as it gets. Its not intended to be windproof, although this is the most windproof, non-windstopper fleece I could possibly imagine. But if you want perfectly windproof, buy something with windstopper or don't go out in the wind, but if you want what this is intended to be - a warm, base layer fleece, then its perfect. I also own a ton of patagonia stuff, love it, but this is hands down my favorite piece of gear that I own and I have a bunch of stuff
I love this jacket! It is super soft and comfortable. I was surprised at how warm it is since it isn't much heavier than a sweatshirt. I haven't experienced any of the matting that other reviewers have mentioned. It keeps me plenty warm and toasty on an average day, but isn't wind resistant and I wouldn't wear it in the rain as it's not a rain jacket. Great buy! I like it much better than any comparable North Face product, and it was less expensive. I highly recommended it.
What is the return policy on this jacket since it's on sale? I had the same fleece and lost it and I'm not sure what size it was. I have long arms so I think I got a large though I usually wear a medium. If it doesn't fit can I return it?
I received this as a gift and my wish was for a similar jacket by The North Face. This jacket far exceeds that one with its cleverly snug wrist bands which keep the cold air out and don't bunch up where my gloves meet my sleeves. There is an ingenious pocket on the chest for my cash and credit in case I get hungry from all the great skiing in Utah! You wanna talk warmth? This jacket, an undershirt and a shell is all you need for anything mother nature is throwing at you that day! As for fit.. I am a small and it fits perfect for its use (as a layer). Thanks Mom and Backcountry for leading her in this direction!!
I will go to base camp with the compressor PL jacket-----------------------Wind will go right through the Monkey Jacket but in conjunction with a shell or something like the Compressor PL you will be very happy!
I gave the Mountain Hardware Monkey Woman Jacket to a female friend as a Christmas gift. She loves it! Fits like a glove, like clothing should! warm & comfortable.
This jacket is so wonderful! I have been wearing a TNF Denali for 8 years and love it, but i wanted this as a thinner/lighter jacket that i could layer under stuff (the sleeves are perfect for that). Turns out it is way hotter than my Denali yet it's so much thinner! Favorite features: the neck when zipped up is tall and roomy and doesn't strangle you, you can get your chin in there great! The chest pocket is great too. I do wish it had zippered pit vents though.
i loved the jacket...it was exactly what i wanted. the sales clerk was very helpful and we found the exact jacket my daughter was asking for. i will defnitely shop with you again. thanks for all of the help.
The jacket is perfect for the NC weather and the fleece is very soft. My personal experience with Backcountry was excellent! I will definitely work with them in the future. Thanks for your assistance and timely response.
I purchased my first Monkey fur a couple years. This year, I decided to get one in black. This is by far the best fleece I've ever owned. It fits in all the right places and is perfect for a woman's figure. The Monkey fur is soft and warm, yet wind resistant. I highly recommend this product no matter what you use it for!
I love the jacket, but I am conflicted about the fit. I usually wear a xs/s, but I was advised to order a size larger than I normally wear because it runs small. I ordered a medium, and it does fit but it may be slightly larger than I would like it to be. However, if I went down a size, I'm pretty sure the sleeves would be too short! I haven't washed mine yet, but if it does shrink up at all, I definitely wouldn't want shorter sleeves. I love the jacket, and it is incredibly warm but the fit was a little difficult for me.
I love this jacket. It's soft, it's warm, it's snuggly. It's great as a light-weight jacket but with a layer under it it's the warmest thing I own. And everybody loves the green!
I bought the Monkey Woman Jacket for my mother for Christmas in 2006 and she loved the jacket for the warmth and soft feel. Unfortunately, my mom lost her jacket, but she liked the Monkey Woman so much that she asked "santa" to get her another one for Christmas 2007.
If you are looking for a warm, soft, and stylish fleece, you should purchase the Monkey Woman jacket for yourself or a friend.
I bought this jacket online because it was 40$ off compared to the store selling them closest to me. When I recieved the jacket for my wife I didn't notice the huge rip by the zipper on the right pocket. I was pissed as **** but, my mother knows how to sow really well so I got lucky and she was able to fix it for my wife on Christmas day. Thanks for the price, I guess the rip was included in the price.
Love the jacket --This is the second one I have purchased. Unfortunantly, it arrived from Backcountry with a defect in the seam. The is a 5-inch gap of unsewn seam in one of the arms at the elbow. Quite disappointing to my teenager when she tried it on Christmas morning..... SO, due to poor quality control and a lingering wonder that I might have been sold a "second", I probably won't order from Backcountry.com again. I'll have a local tailor make the repair rather than mail it back to backcountry.com, just to save time. We love Mountain Hardware products, but will probably shop locally.
My daughter asked for a North Face fleece for Christmas (sound familiar?). We got her this to see if we could help her manage that gigantic sucking sound of teen conformity: she LOVED it. She wears it everyday.
Well this was a must have on my daughter's Christmas list, actually this was the only item she truly cared if she received or not! I came online and did a lot of research on this product because I had never heard of this jacket, and read great reviews and I ordered it from this site and received it quickly!! She opened it at Christmas and put it on, I have to admit...I would love one of these jackets!!! The best wearing jacket I have felt! I was shocked at the warmeth. So if you are in the market...this is a great choice!!
It fits great and is super comfy and soft. First complaint, it attracts hair like the bujesus and because of that nappy knit hair gets stuck in the weave and does not come out, even with washing. Second complaint, is that it is not super durable. I have had mine for about 5 months, the seams are coming apart and you can see the wear on the elbows and back. If I had it to do over again I would just have purchased the Arc'teryx Covert.
I love the Mountain Hardwear Monkey Woman Jacket! It has a pretty cute look, is incredibly soft and very warm. It also packs nice and small, and the stretch material at the bottom works well under a harness.
Not that it was the fault of Backcountry.com, but when I got this jacket, it was completely coming apart at the seams! I took it to a local ACE hardware that also sold the women's Monkey Jacket, and they kindly exchanged it. I was so upset because it was a birthday gift for my daughter. I will continue to do business with Backcountry.com but hesitate to ever buy Mountain Hardwear again.
Got this for my lady friend at the time. She seemed very happy with it, and it was warm. I did wear it once. Surprisingly, it didn't hold smell (smoke) more...
