Oooh oooh oooh! Aah aah!

The Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket offers fuzzy, plush warmth to backcountry-exploring male primates. This jacket’s high-loft Polartec ThermalPro Monkey Phur not only feels fabulously soft, it compresses for easy packing, insulates you from the cold, and sheds light precip. The Monkey Man’s versatility and breathability prompted alpine climber Ed Viesturs to bring a Monkey Man Jacket on his recent Annapurna trip.

Warmth Not Worth the Bulkiness

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had this jacket for a couple of years now and it has been used for a few months in the backcountry. This layer is very warm, but it is also rather bulky. I would personally recommend this piece as an around town piece and not something that I would pack.

A winner

Light, warm, super comfortable, and looks great. 5''9" 180# -- medium fits perfect. Plus it's stretchy. Nice athletic fit.

Does the job.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Was looking for a warm jacket that was NOT down and NOT primaloft-type to wear under backpack straps for x-c skiing and backpacking and as a "warm when wet" layer. This is great. Layered under gortex coat or ultralight windbreaker, it's warm. Without the shell, it breathes nicely during exertion and stays warm when wet, with moisture wicking to surface of fabric. Worn with a shell to neg. 7 F (no wind) while skiing; worn w/o shell after heating up. Great sweat management. Big pockets accept mitten shells, second hat/balaclava, windbreaker for layers on short trips. Good height for collar. Any negatives? The sale-priced version only came in red, a gang color in my neighborhood. Whatever. // Size: I'm 5'11/160 lbs., muscular. Size M fits great as second "puffy layer" over a base layer, under down jacket or wind/rain shell.

Definitely not wind proof but a great layer nonetheless. Fits very true to size. I'm 5'11" and 175 and large fit great.

Does this fleece shed? I bought the Marmot Solar Flair fleece which also has this fuzzy appearance. However, as the other reviewer said (I'd have taken his advice) in that product's review, that fleece sheds like crazy. Can anyone please tell me whether the Monkey Man sheds or not? Thanks.

Responded on

CK,
300 and 400 fleece weight garments will typicaly shed more than lower weight fleeces but I have not experienced much shedding with the Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man. For a low shedding high-loft I would also recommend the Patagonia R4.

Mike, thank you!

Warmest Fleece out there

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

The warmest and most comfortable fleece you are going to find out there. Wind does cut through it, but can easily use with baselayer/windstopper and set

Great Fleece

This jacket is everything it claims to be, and more. The hand pockets are huge enough (reach almost to the shoulders) so that you can inside-out them and pack the jacket into them to make a decent camping pillow. The thinner fleece material on the wrists is nice in that it doesn't get caught on things. Like others have said, wind can cut right through it but if you layer a shell over it you'll be able to handle a lot of climates.

Sizing: 5'9" and 140lbs, medium fits very well.

Bottom line: definitely recommend it, definitely buy it again.

Best Fleece Jacket Ever

  • Fit: True to size

For sizing, I'm 5'9 140lbs. I have a narrow frame. The Monkey Man Size Small fits me perfectly. I also find Montbell and Salomon gear to fit in the same manner as opposed to North Face or Patagonia which are cut larger. I bought this piece to wear over a true base layer to go out snowshoeing, split-boarding, hiking, etc. Having just received it I've only been able to wear it around town and to the office. With just a base layer I can wear this jacket in temps from 32F to 50F without feeling too hot or cold. Although I do add a shell or puffer if it's windy or raining. This jacket allows full range of motion because it doesn't have the bulk of traditional fleece. It also breathes very well so you are warm without overheating. Perfect for what I wanted...in town. Up on the mountain I have no doubt this jacket will perform. Huge hand pockets that extend up the chest. One zipper chest pocket that is below the heart. Key features I like are how the fur fleece wraps your neck when zipped up and the elasticized waist and wrists to keep things snug but not tight. Also, easy zip up and down, no fidgeting. Brilliant so much that I am considering a second just to have when this wears out.

Like a bear skin rug

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

The monkey man is probably the coziest jacket I've ever had. Its more of a layering piece than a stand alone jacket. Wind goes right through it. At 5'10" 240 I went with the large which is what many of my other jackets are, Mountain Hardwear Mountain tech jacket, North Face Red point jacket. The jacket runs a bit short, I prefer a snug fit in my jacekts as I don't ever layer. The Monkey man is too short though falling a couple inches above my belt where the tech jacket is a couple inches below my belt. Comparing this to the monkey man in XL (which I also have)the overall size of the jacket is larger and looses the athletic fit of the jacket almost like a big fluff ball. I would say if you are a bigger guy, athletic or otherwise I would try and find a place to try it on in person its not the most flattering fit wise. I got both on clearance so I can't complain too much on sizing.

You're practically the same size as me and if it were me I'd go for a large in this jacket.

Tango7,
I own the hooded version of this jacket and want to add a little to the advise Jared has already given you. I think he is right that a large will fit you based on the measurements you have given, but you should also consider how you intend to use it. My Monkey Man Fleece has been a constant companion on cold weather outings and I have primarily used it as a laying piece under a shell. Despite being 6'0" and 180, I chose a medium to have a more trim fit that would work well in tandem with outer layers. This has worked well for me, and for my purposes I am glad I got the medium. If you need a good midlayer I would consider a Medium. If you are looking to use the Monkey Man as a stand alone piece or as an outer with layers underneath, I think a Large might suit you well, but always have a mind to your intended use.

Very Pleased in Texas

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The jacket is very warm and comfortable for the mid 20 degree weather we are currently experiencing in the Southwest. I am 5' 10" and 150 lbs and ordered size medium. Jacket fits well be the sleeves are a little bit longer than expected.

I chose the "shark" color which turned out great for my taste - very dark but not black. I think it goes well with the chest pocket/patch than do some of the other colors offered. If I could change anything it would be making the chest patch/logo less obtrusive and shorter sleeves.

Overall a great jacket and warmer than I expected.

The MHW Monkey Man Fleece Jacket does exist in a small but unfortunately we do not have it in stock at the moment. A very good alternative to consider is The North Face Radium Hi-Loft Fleece which we do have in stock in your size.

The warmest fleece you will ever own. Looks amazing. Girls in the bar will want to rub your monkey fur. In the field it will keep you warm as long as there is no wind! The wife waits for me to get home to wrap up in my monkey man, she's even in love with it! Well worth the money. It goes hunting, it goes snow shoeing, it goes drinking! This will become your new best friend!!

I have had mine for a year or so and I have a hard time wearing it. It is just too warm for most conditions. If I do any sort of movement, I warm up and I just roast in this thing.

For those of you that are happy with your Monkey Man, can you tell me where you are from and under what conditions you normally wear this jacket?

Thanks for your help!

Best Answer Responded on

Yeah Kurt, the Monkey Man Fleece jacket is a seriously warm fleece coat. The next time you look for a fleece layer, consider the "weight" of the fleece. Usually this measurement comes in the form of a rating of 100, 200, 300, or occasionally 400--with the higher numbers corresponding to a warmer coat. This jacket is a 300-weight fleece coat, meaning it is at the absolute upper end of warmth for a fleece layer. For light fall and spring days, look at 100-weight fleece coats, colder fall/spring days and light winter days, 200-weight, and then for full on freezing winter, look at 300 and 400 weight fleece like this one.

Pretty Good

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Had this for about a month. So far so good. Warm and super soft. Received many compliments on it. Indoors or out, this boy stays on all day. Would probably sleep in this if I didn't take it off.

Temp wise fares well with just a T shirt or long sleeve T underneath in the anything >40s, anything below that I usually throw a down vest with it (or another layer). Wind does go though this boy like swiss cheese, but its not meant to be a wind-layer. Works well underneath a shell for warm and with some wind-proofing.

Only other thing, I ordered the "black" colour which showed the yellow MHW logo. I received the "black/shark" colour. Not a huge deal, but I think the yellow logo looks better. Just a heads up to others if they are looking for the yellow logo.

Still great fleece and look forward to taking it out on cold mountain days.

Ordered a M, I'm 5'9", ~145 lb for reference. Leans more toward a slim/athletic fit. 4 stars because I don't believe anything is perfect, there is alway something better.

Great Fleece

Very warm, super comfortable fleece. Great athletic fit, except it's a bit short - but I am 6'4", so it's not surprising. It's not windproof, but it doesn't claim to be. I've worn it with a t-shirt, light hoody, and this fleece over, and been VERY warm - but the real Chicago winter has yet to kick in. I know I can layer this under my light down jacket and at least my torso will not feel the cold. I'd recommend this fleece.
