My favorite go-to fleece for cold weather. Super soft and plush, and gets a lot of attention from women. Great for fall, or winter, or to bundle up as your tent-pillow. I don't layer with it too much, because it is pretty bulky, but under a good shell it would keep you most warm indeed. Definitely a solid purchase.

I am just under 6' tall, about 165lbs lean build and have a wing span of just over 6'4". I have a Large (see pic below) that fits loose and comfy- the arms on the med were on the borderline fitting OK and the torso length would have been fine for wearing as a mid-layer but I went with the large and wear it by itself. The jacket itself is very warm but like most fleeces doesn't protect well from wind. It is pretty bulky for backpacking but I wear it just about everywhere else.

Love this thing, probably doesn't need another solid review, but couldn't resist. This is what all fleece aspire to be. Great warmth, super comfortable, perfect fit/cut. 6'1" and 195lbs and the L is perfect. Unlike others out there this thing can stand equally well as a layer under a shell or a stand alone jacket. I actually think it blocks wind pretty well, it is my go to jacket.
Great Fleece!!

I have owned this fleece for about three years. I wear it ALL the time. It is a great jacket. It has no wind resistance but that is not what it is intended for.
It's comfy, warm and fits great. I wear it at home, walking to work, skiing, at the cottage, hiking. Really any occasion I can.
I'm 181 cm 165 lbs and wear a medium.
highly recommended!
Good by itself

I am not going to go into detail as others have already given all the technical detail. I do agree though on the sizing:
I bought the XL (5'11" & 230#) and it has room to spare due to the nature of the material (a bit stretchy). It is as others have said, short in the torso, another 2-3 inches would have been great. Knocked 1 star for this reason.
Other than that negative, this jacket is well worth the comfort and warmth it provides! Very breathable, so you won't sweat in it, unless your running marathons of course. It doesn't knock down any wind, but this is typically worn in warming temps by itself (40-60F). As the other reviewer below, this fleece is great as a winter mid-layer! I usually wear it underneath my down jacket when temps are below zero F.

I have been on a quest for the perfect winter mid-layer. I bought six candidates from Backcountry on Thanksgiving, and returned all of them but this guy. The lofty fleece keeps me warm like sun on a Mexican beach (Corona not included).
I've worn this jacket around the city, on the slopes, and to the crags.
Pros: Good on its own down to 35-40 degrees (with long-sleeve shirt underneath). I pair it with a down jacket for colder temps. It does not block wind, so wear under a down jacket or hardshell if that's a concern. Packs well.
Cons: No hood. Short in torso.
Other: No wind protection (but would make it less packable, so okay trade-off in my book).
Odd sizing, but nice

I found the sizing on this item unexpected. Several reviews indicated that it had a tighter than average fit. Nevertheless I found that I needed a smaller size than I usually wear. I am 6'1" and 185lb with a 42" chest and the medium had the best fit (I tried XL, L, M). I suppose that if this is worn over several other layers the large would be needed but I prefer to wear a fleece over just a Tee, polo shirt, or thermal base layer and the M fits much better there.
The sleeve length in the Medium is easily sufficient for my 6'1" span (the Large looks kind of silly on me), but the torso length is a little short. (I expected this from other reviews.) The Large adds less than half an inch to the length based on the length of the zipper and doesn't fit much differently in that regard.
Despite the sizing this is a warm and very nice feeling fleece, with comfortable, snug cuffs. If it lasts well I expect to be quite happy with it.
Incidentally the Large is zipper compatible with the M.H. Eturnia Trifecta jacket also in size large, but the sleeves are much longer than the jacket's or the fleece that came with it.
Awesome item - not just a jacket

I love this item. True to size, extremely warm, super comfortable, & looks sharp! This is a great mid layer or outer layer when not extremely cold.
LOVE IT

I love this jacket even though it's more like a sweat shirt - something you can wear inside or outside. It's very comfortable! The first week after my purchase I wore it almost every day. It feels like a cashmere bathrobe :) I can't say it's worth the full price. I bought mine for $80, and it's well worth that. I love the slender fit. A large fits me almost perfectly, and I'm 6' and a very lean 200 lb. The sleeves are a little long, and I have fairly long arms. I'd much prefer it this way than have them too short though. I'll be sad when winter ends, and I'll have to put my Monkey Man away for the summer!

Bought the XL. Arms good length, material comfortable, snug fit. For me a little short at the waist. 6'2" 250#.

This thing is warm, soft, and fits perfectly (snug, but not tight). Arm length is just right. I'm 6'1", 170 lbs and got the medium. Not quite as shaggy/long phur as the older ones, but still a great fleece. I love it for layering.
warm but bulky

The monkey man fleece is warm and soft, it is not windproof and wind will cut right though it. I find it a bit bulky to use a layering piece. I am 6'2, 200 lbs and the XL fits perfect.
Amazing!!!

So soft, and warm. The arms are not to long for me despite what other reviews say. Fits a little bit tight, but thats fine. I bring it everywhere I go!

I am a fan of the monkey man fleece and have owned several over the years. I bought a large (I am 6'0" and 190lbs). It fits fine in the chest and the length of the body is fine as well. However, the arms are about 2-3" too long. It looks a little ridiculous. I have owned them in the past and never had this issue. It was clearly a mistake by whoever manufactured them this time around, and that's obviously why they're on sale for $80 on backcountry right now. So, great price, but if you are picky about the fit I would pass up on this sale until they fix it.

I am 5'8 and 135 pounds. Should I get a small or medium?
Chris
Member since
This probably comes a little late for Nick, but for anyone else fitting his description, I would recommend a small. FWIW, I'm 5'8" (173cm) and 145 pounds (66 kg), slim build. I have an older (6-7 yrs.) Monkey Man in Medium that sits right at the belt, with sleeves just long enough that they don't ride up when I raise my arms overhead. MH have changed the cut slightly, and I chose a current Small to replace it. It fits much closer, as expected, with the same, if not slightly longer sleeve to give me the same coverage when raising my arms, despite the fact that it fits snugly around my chest and under my armpits. Also, I personally find it has just a little more torso coverage than that older Medium, which, together with the snugger fit of the Small, means no drafts at the waist. As a mid-layer, I like that it doesn't jut out from underneath any of my jackets, including a fairly short-waisted motorcycle jacket. Toasty warm under a shell, but super breathable to allow you to quickly dump excess heat.

I have been looking for a replacement to my Columbia Titanium fleece for a very long time. This jacket definitely is a great replacement and more... The jacket is very warm and comfortable and fitted. I am 5'8, 158lbs and a medium fits the body well, but the overall length is a couple inches short to my preference and the arms length is a couple inches too long. Overall, happy with the purchase since Backcountry got the best price/customer service/return policy and free 2nd day shipping.
Nice, but a few issues

Got this on SAC, great deal. I really like this jacket, as I like all my Mountain Hardwear stuff - high quality, great fit and function, etc. This jacket is nice and fuzzy, and keeps you very warm and cozy. Two issues with it though - it's not windproof, so you need a shell, or to wear it in a non-windy situation. Otherwise, the wind blows right through it, and you basically might as well not be wearing it - it's that 'holey'. Secondly, it's leaving tons of lint all over my clothes. I haven't washed it yet, hopefully doing that will help. But it's really annoying to have to rub all this lint off. A high quality jacket like this shouldn't have this issue. Other than that - I really like it. Hopefully the lint issue will get resolved after washing - then it will be a great jacket.
On the fit - I'm 6'1", 240 but don't really look as big as that might sound (that's what I hear, at least). The XL fits me perfectly - if I had to critique, maybe just a touch big, but I wouldn't want it any smaller.

Is Thermal Pro Monkey Phur the same thing as Thermal Pro Hi Loft? Does it offer the same level of insulation?

Matt. It is very similar to the fleece you speak of and to my knowledge does provide a similar level of insulation. Hope this info helps!
