Great Winter mid layer or Fall outerwear

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

First off big thank you to Mountain Hardware and Backcountry.com for selecting me to review the Mounkey Man Grid Fleece Jacket for the Backcountry.com community!

This fleece jacket makes for a great winter mid layer or a warm fleece in the fall. Obviously, it’s not going to do anything for you as outerwear in a rainstorm. Also, it’s not wind resistant at all. However, what it lacks in outwear protection it gains in breathability. This piece truly shines as a mid layer. It’s thin, warm, breathable, and has a trim athletic fit. You can where it for days at a time without having severe odor issues. I'm 6'3 and 180 lbs and received a Large, but believe an XL would have been a better fit for me (or rather Large Tall if it existed). While it fits my shoulders and torso well, I can't use the thumb loops for more than a few minutes without feeling them digging in (common problem for me, I'm just tall, skinny and gangly, which is why I still say it fits true to size). Zipping up with the hood on would also probably be more comfortable for me in an XL. The pocket arrangement is basic and well organized, but with the athletic cut of the jacket don’t expect to store anything larger than you’re phone or iPod. The fleece material has a great texture that makes for a very comfortable feel to the jacket.

Other than my personal sizing issues I'm stoked on the jacket. I think it's great for cold weather running, fall outerwear, or a mid layer on cold winter days. With a nice base layer underneath I'm comfortable using this jacket as outerwear down to around 20 degrees if it’s not windy, maybe around 10 degrees if I'm going for a run (take note that I'm used to living in Vermont, Fraser Valley CO, and Jackson… I’m accustomed to cold). I’d recommend this product to anyone looking for a light fleece for active cold weather use!

I have an older Monkey Man fleece. It is the only MHW product that fits differently on me. I normally wear small in everything. For the Monkey Man I had to size up to a medium. Does this product fit like the other Monkey Man products?

Responded on

It does. It's definitely intended to fit snugly to your body, so if you want more of a sweatshirt fit I'd size up again.

A big hit

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bagged 3 of these. one for myself and one each for my lads for a Telluride ski trip. They wore this and the Patagonia Down Shirt as mid layers on alternate days. Hopefully they will now ditch those awful, ghastly, naff, cotton, baggy "hoodies" when they get home to London. Warm, slim-fitting, vents well and when Jack Frost starts to gnaw at your exposed parts, just flip the hoodie under your skid-lid and it provides welcome insulation from the elements

I like this fleece a lot, mostly.
I hike in the mountains of Montana a lot. I foresee this being a great mid or outer layer . I got it to be a layer up from my Patagonia R1 Hoodie (one of the best items I own).
So far I think I will be happyish, but there are some details that could use some tweaking still

Pros- Its pretty warm, yet breathable, very versatile.
Cons- Several small things. The thumb loops are too tight to wear very long. The hood comes to under my chin, and is not a balaclava. It is fitted in that it would not go over a helmet, but isn't really that fitted.. The flap behind the zipper has loose stitching that began to get stuck in the zipper on day one.

EDIT:
I am very disappointed in the quality of this item. Beside the cons mentioned above. The elastic waist drawstring has broken. I have older MH gear that is of a very high quality and lasted many years. I hope this doesn't represent the rest of their lineup. I will be wary of continuing to buy their brand.

Is it windproof?

Is it windproof?

Responded on

No. Something like the Airshield Monkey Man would be though.
