    Advanced comfort for all primates.

If you'd stop eating bananas and scratching yourself for just one second, you'd realize that the fleece you're wearing isn't nearly as soft, warm, or comfortable as the Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man 200 Men's Fleece (Your old fleece is also covered in fleas and banana bits, probably.) To be fair, nothing is as soft or as comfortable, since nothing else is made of Polartec Monkey Phur, nor is anything else built with Polartec PowerStretch panels and MicroClimate Zoning construction for breathability and stretch. The Monkey Man's 200-weight fleece is a great midweight layer, or can be worn by itself on mild days when you're swinging through the trees.

Warm, Holds Up Well, Cats Like It

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: Small

I've had this fleece for a little over a year and it's still extremely warm and in one piece despite my general abuse of it via climbing, skiing and tons of everyday wear. My cat loves its supple furriness and will gravitate towards it wherever it is in the house: bonus points for that. My only complaint is that the Small runs pretty big on me and is the smallest size offered. However, sizing any outdoor gear as a shorter-than-average male is now a complete pain in the ass not unique to Mountain Hardware products, so no stars will be docked for that. Since the sleeves are quite long on me, a nice solution was to cut into the stretch material at the ends and sew in thumb loops in the appropriate spots. Problem solved and certainly something that might be considered as a potential feature of the garment to begin with!

    The BOMB!!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

Absolutely the fuzziest warmest fleece jacket, gotta get one, looks great also, I'll be wearing this a lot this winter. Thank you back country for a great product, price and delivery, you know I'm coming back for more.

Mountain Hardwear claims this fleece is some combination of synthetic materials called Monkey Phur but once you wrap the butter-soft fold around your body you'll feel the comforting, protected embrace of a frightened toddler being guarded by a docile primate patriarch. If there's anyone in your life that you like to hug, buy this for them and those hugs will become infinitely more fulfilling. Get one for your mom, dad, brother, sister, significant other, coworker-who-you-maybe-dont-have-an-HR-appropriate-relationship-with, children, heck... buy one for the newborn baby and just use it as a blanket until that little bundle of joy can fit its little arms in the sleeves. Wear this to a music festival or political protest and stand next to the weird guy with the Free Hugs tshirt with a sign saying "Hugs - $5." BOOM! The jacket will pay for itself.

    Super Fuzzy

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

I bought this for a friend who wanted a simple jacket that wasn't bulky or heavy and could be used any time of year. He loves it and wears it constantly. More than a few people I know have one of these and they all wear them until they destroy them. I'll probably buy one for myself pretty soon.

    • Size Bought: Large

Super soft and comfortable. Warm enough for me as a winter jacket but light enough for spring/fall. I have friends asking me where I got it and complimenting it all the time. I'm 6'-1", 190lb and the large fits perfect without the sleeves being too short. Only gripe I can come up with is the sleeves fit a little tight especially at the cuffs where the elastic material is. Not a problem for me though.

    Great fleece/jacket

I have been a long time mh fan and having been buying their jackets and fleeces for over 10 years. I have not liked a lot of the jackets they have been putting out lately. They can't seem to get the sizing right for most of them. They are either to short or too bulky. This jacket those is a perfect fit and true to size. Solid design and material. The colors are great.

    Warm and practical

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This jacket works great on its own or as a midlayer. I like it over other fleeces I've owned for the stretch material around the wrists that keeps the fleece from getting caught up when working with your hands.

    So Fluffy

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

I got this jacket on moving to Boston to prepare for the winter. This is a great jacket for fall temperatures and makes a great addition to a layering system for the coldest of days. It is also extremely fuzzy - and people will want to feel how fuzzy you are

    The Coziest

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

I am a fan of the Mountain Hardwear line, and picked this fleece up for my man. Absolutely no regrets- it is the softest, most comfortable, great lookin' fleece.
As far as fit goes, it does run true to size without being any sort of baggy. He generally wears a M-L in tops, and the Large fits perfect over a thin-midweight shirt. It is a true midweight fleece, perfect by itself for a chilly morning or a great layer under a shell for the colder/harsher days. Washed it a couple of times now, and haven't had any issue with pilling or anything else falling to pieces! Standard Mountain Hardwear quality, definitely would recommend!

    Great Fleece

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: small

I bought this off of a high recommendation from a friend. I'm 5'7 and 135 lbs and the small fits great. The only weird part is that the arms are a bit long, but that's not a problem. I've taken this jacket out ice climbing and definitely gotten a good amount of use from it. It's super warm and I normally just wear this around town when it's in the 20's F. It is a fleece, so it's by no means windproof, but toss a shell on over and it becomes bomber. I have plans on rocking it out on some Colorado mountains, but it better be dang cold before I wear this while hiking. I was skeptical about the price at first, but I am stoked that I bought it. I plan on getting plenty more use out of this jacket.

    Bomber

I've had the Monkey Man 200 for a couple months now and it's fantastic. It's gotta be one of the most comfortable fleece jackets on the market. It is remarkably warm for its weight, so I have to make sure the weather is cool enough before I put it on. Otherwise I'll be sweating in no time. It's not windproof, but I knew that going into the purchase. Pair the Monkey Man 200 with a wind shell and a mid-weight base and you'll be good into the 40's and definitely down to freezing or below if you're moving around. I'm 5'9" 155 and the medium fits perfect with plenty of room for a long-sleeved base.

Not what I expected but is a nice fleece

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

This jacket is much thinner than I thought it would be, but this may be because they try to make it lighter for hikers. I ordered a Medium and it fit pretty good. I am 5'8 155lbs

Update: about a day later I decided that this jacket wasn't worth the $104.99 I payed for it and is DEFINITELY NOT worth the retail price of $149.99...I would not recommend this jacket to anybody. I would rather have payed $40 for a Columbia fleece at fleet farm. I change my rating to 2/5 stars.

Can someone help me figure out how these newer Monkey Man jackets align with the older Monkey Man (when there was just one jacket)? Is the MM200 lighter than the old Monkey Man? Is the MM Grid more comparable to the old MM?

    Best Answer

They are related in name only. The originals were made of 300 weight Polartec, really thick and really furry looking. These new ones are a 200 weight Polartec, lighter and not as furry, which has a lot of people who own the older version screaming foul and that this one was a bad design change by Mountain Hardwear. They are still pretty warm and very, very comfortable, better for layering than the originals, which were better as a stand alone jacket. The Grid version just has a smoother compressed outer surface to it, less fluffy fur about it, to reduce bulk. And as you'll find here in the reviews and in other reviews online the arms do tend to be a little long, so they do bunch a little if you have short arms, but I don't find it a problem, and I have short arms. If you're climbing or hiking with poles, always stretching, the cuffs wont be riding up your arms.

    Hope that helps............

Is this warmer than the Monkey Man Grid?

I have to disagree -somewhat. I have both. The non-grid is definitely thicker, heavier (200g/m) and more of the jacket is actually fleece. For example in Non-grid stretch panels are minimal, and the chest pocket is sown OVER the fleece. Fleece material pretty much covers 90% of your body.

The Grid is lighter, the stretch panels are about 30-40% of the jacket : for example the chest pocket is sown not over the fleece but replaces the fleece in that area. And so the jacket is not as warm. But the Grid is made to trap the heat , and the fit is different. The grid is closer to body (if it works with your build) and can therefore be more efficient for some.

    Hope this helps.

What is warmer, this or a Patagonia R3/R4?
