You won\\222t turn to stone when you look at the Mountain Hardwear Medusa Glove, but you might be blown away by its utterly badass stretch shell featuring OutDry Technology. Instead of putting the waterproof membrane inside the glove like others, Mountain Hardwear laminated it directly to the shell to stop wind and moisture from the get-go. The extra-long gauntlet keeps out powder, ice, and other mountain debris, and the tough goatskin leather palm helps grip your ski poles. The removable fleece liner glove features windproof fleece on the top and stretch fleece with welded grip pads on the palm for more dexterous tasks.

Bottom Line: A versatile glove system for tough mountain conditions.

Finishing up a full season of using these gloves for backcountry skiing I would say I'm impressed overall. It's rare that I've had a glove make it through an entire season, but these are still in great shape and maintain their amazing waterproofing. I've rappelled through waterfalls where my partners gloves were soaked all the way through and mine stayed dry inside. They are not as warm as I thought they would be, but work fine for moderately cold temps. The sinch cord on the gauntlet is the nicest I've ever found. You pull one to tighten and one side to loosen which works really slick.

ok, not great

i'm a big MHW fan but didn't love these gloves. I rarely get a full season out of a pair, and here's what i found about these:

pros:
waterproof. never had an issues with water getting in, even skiing in 40 degrees and rain.
length. come way up over your forearm and have the cords so you don't lose them.
removeable liner.

cons:
I found the liner to make my hands sweat extensively, in turn making my hands cold. I did, however, take the liners out and replaced them with a pair of cheapo-s i picked up and there were much better.
not great if you need to use ur fingers alot. the fingers are bulky and make even relatively simple tasks, like buckling ski boots, difficult.
fingers started to tear at the seams after approx. 3 months of use.

A Work in Progress with Strengths

These would be five stars if Mountain Hardware could get a few things right...
- Sizing is way off (for N American Standards) I into an extra large and they still feel too small with the liners in - I normally would wear a large. I really wish MH could get their sizing right/standardized across their line.
- If your hand gets hot/wet you will have a hard time packing your hand back in (with liners on) they do not breathe well
- Dexterity also becomes an issue - if you are doing anything technical you may feel like you have mitts on.I mainly wear mine without liners for the above reasons.

They are warm - for a glove which typically means trouble after -20C.

Be carefull

This might be a good glove if it were but measured on waterproofness and warmth alone. However, should you be required to use your hands - specifically the fingers - to grip something like and ice axe for an extended period of time, then these gloves are a wash. With the removable liner inside the shell, they lose all dexterity, and the fingers become very stiff - so much so that it requires a continuous and deliberate effort to close the fingers, such as when making a fist. I doubt that they will "wear in".

Could be better

By:
January 21, 2011

I'm a big MH fan but these gloves fell a little short of my expectations. I liked the idea of a modular glove for BC skiing and this one looks good on paper.

My biggest hangup is the stiffness of the glove. I'm not sure whether its the materials or the cut of the articulation but I find glove to feel stiffer than I like. It's not a bulky glove but it feels like one when using the liner and shell.

I also thought the glove would have been warmer than I'm finding. If I had a shot at redesigning I would add some insulation to the back of the outer shell and find a way to increase the flexibility of the shell.

Not a bad glove just not I'd hoped for...

Not warm enough!

By:
January 11, 2010

Sadly, these gloves were not at all warm enough for a recent ski trip to Wisconsin. Granted, it was 9 degrees, and probably mitten weather, but everyone else with gloves or mittens had kept their fingers warm and mine were like ice. I am returning these; still in search of some super warm gloves. They did run a wee bit small when you wear with the liners.
