Mountain Hardwear Lamina 35 Sleeping Bag: 35 Degree Synthetic

I live in Atlanta and was looking for a 3 season bag for trips up onto the AT. The Lamina has been a pleasant surprise. It's my first synthetic bag and I wasn't sure how I'd like it. As it turns out ... I love it!. Packs very small ... I put it in a 10 liter compression dry sack. It's temp rating seems to be pretty accurate. Material is soft and seemingly durable enough and contrary to other reviews, I don't find the zipper to be a problem. Last but not least ... this bag doesn't bust the bank. The only fault I can find is that I bought the long and at 6'1" , I barely fit in it. For taller guys, it's not exactly roomy but I use it more as a blanket so ... no worries.

To be honest, I had pretty low expectations for this bag. I bought this and the Lamina 0 on a deep clearance, and thought I'd use them from time to time when I wanted to give my down bags a break, or I know I'll be in wet conditions. I had no idea how lucky I'd be to get these on sale...

The first thing I noticed was its quality. The stitching and shell are top notch. The liner feels great against your skin. Its a cozy bag. Even at full price it feels like it would cost twice what it does.

Secondly, I was really, really surprised to see it pack down so small. I usually poopoo synthetic bags as being bulky. Well, this one defies that opinion. Now, the Lamina 0, also a great bag, even considering its significantly lower rating, does not seem to pack down as efficiently. This bag is very light and small for its rating. That would obviously lead one to think its rating is a bit liberal. Not so. Granted, I'd make sure to wear a full layer, top and bottom, if its going to be near its rating of 35. However, I've returned down bags rated at 30 that were not as warm as this bag.

Another surprise, particularly given how small it packs down, is that its roomy. I'm not a fan of really snug sleeping bags, and this thing had a pleasant roominess to it. That combined with the great shell and it was a luxurious few nights with this as my bag.

Some people will accuse Mountain Hardwear of having lost an edge on quality over these last few years. While that might be true with some pieces (not any in my personal experience), this bag does nothing but exude quality.

Even at full price its a nice bag. If you catch it on sale... jump on it.

This is an awesome sleeping bag that is all-around solid in every stat. Very compact, lightweight, and spacious for backcountry use. Mountain Hardwear continues to impress.

I love this bag. I have used it for a summer leading backpacking, climbing and whietwater canoeing trips in Northern Wisconsin including a few 30 degree nights on Isle Royale. It kept me perfectly warm with only a base layer and beanie.

I am now using it on canoeing expeditions all over the South East. I use it unzipped as a cover most nights down here. Packs smal enough to fit inside my smaller drybags or placed into my cook pots on back packing trips.

The zipper does stick a little which can get pretty annoying at 2 am when nature calls. Thats really the only bad thing i have to say about it though. MH always makes good gear

I used this bag for tent camping and had no problems. Some reviews I read mention that the zipper gets caught. That has NOT been my experience if you zip or unzip the bag with a slight tug. I have a short and I purchased a regular length for my husband.The bags easily zip together and the difference in length is at the feet. We like the compact size and hopt to take it on some bike trips. Great bag to use in milder weather.

The bag was prefect for what i needed. We camped out for 7 days in utah with weather ranging from high 20s to mid 40s at night. The bag was extremely comfortable and there was plenty of room. Im 6'2" 200lbs. (long bag)

I have to be brutally honest on this bag. Mountain Hardwear is generally my go to brand for quality, but this bag did not stand up to any test. I gave it two chances and on both occasions the Lamina failed to keep my warm. On both trips the temperature was around 40F and at the lowest 35. I found myself on both occasions having to boil water and storing it in a Nalgene for extra warmth to maintain some small bit of comfort. I plan on returning this bag well before my next trip.

Best part of this bag: Stuff sack was great. Storage Sack comes with me on all trips simply to store other items.

I would not recommend this item to a friend or even foe.

This bag just didn't breathe sufficiently for me. I'm trading it in for a down version. I was concerned about synthetic just for this reason, but after reading reviews decided to give it a try. But I was always sweaty and cold. I tried it 2x and while I loved the compact size for backpacking, it just wasn't right for me. I love that backcountry.com will take care of this exchange for me and make me happy with a down bag.
