Round out your cold-weather expedition kit with the ultimate warmth of the Mountain Hardwear Women's Hunker Down Parka. Brutally cold weather can easily defeat a fleece or softshell jacket, but the baffled design of this 650-fill down jacket traps warmth like none other. Remove the hood to further slim down this sub-two-pound jacket and slide it into your backcountry gear bag when winter calls your name.

  • Lofty, 650-fill down insulation provides all the warmth you need for bitterly cold days, without a nasty weight penalty
  • Abrasion-resistant reinforcement panels on the shoulders and arms add to the overall durability
  • Fleece-lined handwarmer pockets keep your digits from freezing off deep into the winter

Bottom Line: Dig in, hunker down, and sit out the storm with all the warmth you'll ever need.

Hunker Down Parka

Pros:
-Super warm
-Water resistant, dries fast on low in the dryer (I haven't been in a soaking rain/snow with it yet)
-Great in windy conditions
-Comfortable, love the fuzzy collar
-Feels like you're walking around in the best down comforter
-Hood is nice
-Coat length is good, arm length is good

Cons:
-A little tight around my hips/butt, can ride up a little
-A few more feathers sneak out of the seams than I would like
-Hood can be a little bulky when not in use
-A few more pockets would be nice

I really love this down jacket, it's way warm and fits great. I got a size small and was a little worried that it was going to be too short in the sleeves, but it's perfect. I can even fit a light weight fleece underneath if its extra cold outside. I can wear the coat with only a t-shirt underneath and am still comfortable on a cold Michigan winter morning to let the dog out. The length is great, too, going over my hips. The only down side is that there is a little bit of molting going on, and my car seats and shirts have little feathers on them. Not too bad, though. It's puffy and thick, and the hood rocks.

Jenny, per my wife the sizing chart is accurate and fit is true to size. As for washing, you can wash down products but extra care must be used to protect the down. There are special products made to use for detergent and a quick search will give you detail step by step procedures.

Great Parka, Keeps her toasty

By:
January 21, 2012

My wife tends to get cold very quickly and found she couldn't spend much time outside when the weather dropped below freezing.

Knowing it would could soon drop to -20, I purchased this parka for her as a gift and It has since made all the difference. I no longer have concerns about a winter visit to my hometown of Fairbanks.

She wear's it daily in the cold winter's of northern Vermont. She raves about the warmth of the hood and how she can cinch the inner material around her face to keep out the draft, but at the same time the outer portion of the hood remains in place to block the wind.

She's regularly receives compliments on the parka... especially on the bitterly cold days.

The fit is perfect and everything is as advertised. She's 5'11 and has the medium size.

Before purchasing I did quite a bit of research. I looked at this and similar parkas. Other sites happened to have more reviews, and I was even able to find a YouTube video of a reviewer with a similar build wearing the exact same model parka, which really helped in my decision to purchase. Many of the manufactures have these sorts of videos, and it might be smart for backcountry.com to link to them directly.

Another factor that played into my decision was past experience with the Mountain Hardwear brand.

My research showed this was the best price online (plus it had free shipping).

Thanks!
