Description

Sometimes you have to bring your own luxury.

The 'rustically luxurious' cabin you rented for Christmas turned out to be a lot more rustic than luxurious, and the furnace won't send anything through the vents except cold air and black smoke. Luckily, you can wait out the cold in your down-filled Mountain Hardwear Hunker Down Parka. While the rest of your clan is huddled around a small propane space heater and looking for furniture to burn, you'll be cozy enough to relax and appreciate the extensive collection of antler lamps and artistic depictions of bears paddling canoes, and you'll be the only one willing to step out the door in search of the outhouse.

  • Polyester ripstop shell fabric is lightweight and durable
  • 650-fill goose down insulation seals out the cold with one of nature's best warmth-to-weight ratios
  • Insulated hood protects your head and ears from the cold
  • Packable down compresses tightly so this jacket will take up minimal room in your pack
  • One-handed hem and hood drawcords let you quickly seal out cold air
  • Fleece-lined pockets protect your hands from the cold
  • Internal water bottle pocket holds your beverage close to your body so it won't freeze

Great jacket

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I purchased this jacket knowing I needed something warm to wear ice fishing and other general outdoor activities in northern MN. We spent the previous weekend out watching 10 hours of hockey on Lake Pokegema in -5F temps with windchills between -30 and -40F. This jacket, simply stated, preformed better than I could have ever hoped. I wore an insulating under layer, a sweatshirt and this jacket. My upper body never felt the slightest bit cold. I couldn't be happier with my purchase

Love it!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I really like this coat. I am 6'3", athletic-skinny, and purchased a XL. Looked huge at first, but am used to the fit and enjoy the extra room. This is 650 fill, and keeps me toasty in the WI winter. My 800 fill TNF doesn't keep me much warmer...probably better off wearing this parka over that! I love the brown color, the hood, and the pockets (they aren't that nasty fabric that sticks to your hands). I really enjoy the jacket...looks good too!

How does the Hunker Down compare to the Chillwave? I read the Chillwave has 13oz of fill; anybody know how much the Hunker Down has?

Responded on

timp. The Hunker Down Jacket Parka contains about 224grams of 650-fill Gray European Goose Down. This equates to about 7.9oz of down and these numbers are for sample size medium. The Chillwave Parka contains about 364grams of 650-fill down which equates to about 12.8oz. The Chillwave Jacket and Parka also utilize a wind and weather resistant membrane called AirSheild Core which make them much more weather resistant than the Hunker Down Jacket and Parka. These differences in down fill and in fabrics accounts for the price difference between the jackets and parkas. Cheers!

Thanks for the thorough answer Jon. This will be a commuter coat for Chicago winters. I am thinking the Hunker Down will be warm enough, plus I think the hood is a bit sleeker than the Chillwave.
Thanks again!

How does the Hunker Down compare to the Nilas?
I'll be doing an expedition skills seminar on Rainier next year, and I'd like to find a parka that will be sufficient without going broke.

Best Answer Responded on

Pat. The Hunker Down Parka could be a great jacket for Rainer except for one small detail... It is missing the weather resistant barrier that is present in the Nilas Down Jacket. We developed the Nilas Jacket for Ueli Steck, the Austrian Alpinist, to his exact spec and with Air Shield Elite 15D fabric covering 850-fill down it is probably the nicest down jacket we have ever made. The Hunker Down is also nice but for a different environment. If you want to take the jacket to a relatively wet alpine environment I think the Nilas would be a better choice. For a less expensive option I would consider the Chillwave Jacket as well. I hope this info helps!
