Ultralight warmth and protection for the alpine.

The Women's Phantom Hooded Down Jacket readies you for cold alpine conditions. Its baffled shell works with the down's Q.Shield treatment to resist moisture and retain its warmth even if it gets wet. The down's 850-fill rating means this jacket brings the highest loft and the lowest weight available. Butter Jersey cuffs utilize soft elastics to seal out the cold, and the zippered handwarmer pockets are always accessible even with a harness or backpack on. Mountain Hardwear added two large internal mesh pockets for gloves.

    Wonderful Warmth

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

This jacket is so great. This is by far the warmest down jacket I've ever owned. I bought it to camp in the desert in the spring as well as for winter camping. I wanted something thick but still compressible. This jacket doesn't aim to be a super minimalist jacket like the Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer. I was looking for a jacket that would keep me warm without having to pack a bunch of layers to wear underneath. This jacket does the job. I use it for walking around campus in Salt Lake City, UT. I'd say the comfort zone for this jacket it 10F with a maximum low around -5F. It has nice thumb catches that keep my hands warm while driving.

Great jacket but didn't work for me.

I really wanted to keep this jacket it was so soft and warm, like cuddling up in a sleeping bag. But I needed a ski jacket and this needs a shell over it for protection from the wind. With a shell it would have been too bulky. If I could have justified purchasing it just because I loved it I would definitely not have returned it.

I really wanted to like this jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size

I had ordered this jacket to be my "in between" coat, for temperatures between +20F and -20F, before the parka gets pulled out. I live in central Alaska, so there is very little to worry about in terms of wind or precipitation in the winter, just varying degrees of cold. I received this coat at the end of November. There are a lot of things I like about it. It fit GREAT. I have quite broad shoulders, and was delighted to be able to move/ski/play in the snow in this coat without any binding around the shoulders or chest. Loved the color, the hood worked well, sleeves were long enough, fabric seemed sturdy, all good things. But the insulation just did not cut it. My core was warm, I could tell extra effort had been made to insulate around the chest area, which was cozy. But even at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, the cold soaked right into the shoulders and arms, so much so that my shoulders started to get stiff during a ski. So, alas, I will be sending this lovely puffy back. If adaptations were made to the shoulders and arms so there was not a heat loss in those areas, I would keep it in a heartbeat. I could see this coat working for someone who lives in a warmer climate, but tends to be on the chilly side. The extra insulation in the body of the jacket would be super snuggly.

    Awesome jacket, color is off!

I originally ordered the "Graphite/Bright Rose" color. When I got it instead of looking black and red it was grey and pink. Does not look like the picture. I will be exchanging it for the blue one for sure! Overall the quality looks great. When trying it on inside I was starting to get too hot.

Also I was warned that this runs a little large. I ordered an xs, I'm 5'1" and 115 lbs, fits great.

How is the Phantom Hooded Down Jacket at blocking wind?

    Jen,

This coat is meant to be paired with a windproof shell, like the Mountain Hardwear Torsun Jacket. The Phantom Down will be okay in light or moderate wind, but it's really just an insulating layer, not a wind or waterproof layer.
