The Nitrous' high-tech water-resistant down maintains loft and insulates even when the jacket is soaked through.

Down is nature's best insulator. It's also completely useless when it gets wet. Mountain Hardwear resolves the saturation issue with its water-resistant down found in the Men's Nitrous Hooded Jacket. Incredibly lightweight and packable, the Nitrous will serve as your go-to layering piece or stand-alone frigid weather jacket for your next hike or your next ski vacation.

The Nitrous jacket's face fabric is tough 30D nylon ripstop fabric. This wind-resistant fabric is soft and smooth to make layering easy. Mountain Hardwear then insulated the jacket with its Q.Shield 800-fill water-resistant down. The down fibers are permanently infused with a water-repellant, so it maintains its loft and its insulating properties when wet. An insulated, adjustable hood locks in heat where it's most likely to escape. The Nitrous' dual hem drawcords and comfortable, elasticizes cuffs seal out drafts to keep you warm in high winds, and the jacket stuffs into its own pocket for the minimum possible pack size when not in use.

  • Wind-resistant 30D nylon ripstop face fabric
  • 800-fill water-resistant Q.Shield down
  • Regular fit, waist-length
  • Packs into its own stow pocket
  • 2 hand pockets

Good jacket, poor fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

I wanted to love this jacket, but it runs much too large in the midsection. I had to return it, since the fit of a down jacket impacts its warmth.

I'm 6'1", 185 lbs with an athletic build. I bought the large. It fit in the arms and shoulder, but the mid section was cut for someone with a beer belly. Even after you cinch down the elastic waist cord, you looked like you were pregnant with a little down baby.

I swapped it out for the Rab Microlight Alpine (size L), which offered a much better fit and comparable insulation for the same price.

Get a boost with this down hoody

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I debated a long time about buying a new lightweight down jacket. I knew the specs I wanted: 750+ fill, decent looking, hooded, stowable in its own pocket. But I couldn't decided on brand between the group of jackets that all met those requirements. I considered Rab, or Mammut based on euro climbing heritage, but after trying all jackets on I knew the MHW Nitrous was the right one. Very lightweight, stows into a size smaller than a Nalgene bottle, and very warm whether stationary or on the move. And the price is right. Best price for its place in the market.

Great Lightweight Down Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This jacket is warm, light, compressible and looks sweet. I am 6'4" and 180 pounds and the large just barely fits me. I have typically owned synthetic insulated jackets so I can't compare this to other downs, but this jacket is warm for me to 28 degrees with a longsleeve under it. This fits well under my shell, and the hood is light and low-profile enough so that it is not in the way. The description says that it stows in its own pocket- there is NO internal pocket to stow the jacket like many other down jackets. I can stuff the jacket in one of the main handwarmer pockets on the outside and it fits well enough, so this is not a complaint. The hood is smaller than I expected, there is no slack when it is over my head. I like this because it keeps wind away from my head and neck. The shiraz color is unique to MH and looks great. I like the fit far better than the Patagonia down jacket I tried on. The Patagonia fits like a rectangle box and this jacket fits like a glove.

You will be happy to know that the Nitrous Jacket is intended to stuff into the external hand-warmer pocket. Many down jackets in the past have used an internal pocket as a stuff-stow, but many rain shells and packable downs are now going for an outside pocket.
