Super-lightweight insulation for your high-elevation pursuits.

Whether you're making a 4 a.m. summit push, ripping skins on bone-chilling dawn patrols, or standing at belay while your buddy figures out the crux moves, the Mountain Hardwear Men's Ghost Whisperer Hooded Down Jacket will fend off the cold without adding a bunch of weight to your load. With 800-fill down and a weight of only 8 oz, the Ghost Whisperer is the lightest in its class, and it utilizes Q.Shield down that resists moisture, so your warmth doesn't get sabotaged by water. Who are they sizing this for?

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

This is a great lightweight jacket – if it fits you. Everything about it is light and I’m sure it’s very packable – ideal for a trekking jacket or climbing mid-layer. I’m just not sure who they had in mind when they made the patterns. I’m 6’2”, 175 lbs and the large is about the right length in the body and arms. Unfortunately there is enough room in the body for both me and a small gorilla , which would make it very thermally inefficient as you waste body heat warming up all that space. The medium is just too short overall and small in the shoulders.

If you like a very loose fit and are looking for a light layering piece, you’ll probably be happy with this. As for me, I'm looking elsewhere.

Great, but.....

  • Gender: Male

Ordered this a few weeks back. I'm 6'1 and 230lbs. Measurements say I should wear an XL. Ordered the XL and I was swimming in it. The sleeves were particularly long, like for a orangutan. They seriously fully covered my hand and fingers with my arms extended and I have normal/long arms. I don't get it. The wrists openings were so gigantic Sasquatch could have invaded through the sleeves. Length was decent if not a bit short for my longer torso. I have returned this and am waiting for it to arrive @ Backcountry so my size large will ship. Didn't want over $500 outstanding on a single jacket.

*Really* wanted to like it but...

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large

I loved the Azul colorway and was really looking forward to this jacket. It is as light as everyone says and really cool looking. I am 6' 180 and ordered a medium because I like mid-layers to fit fairly close. It had very long arms and a long torso so that part was great but the chest was a bit tight. I think if I got a large the chest would have been perfect but maybe the arms and waist would have been too large? In any case I should have read the reviews first - the wrists bothered me because they were so large and open. The waist can be cinched and the hood is great but the sleeves are just floppy and wide open. That and the slightly tight chest and I decided its going back. Bummer.

The Hyper Blue one got a black zipper

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

It`s great down jacket, but the zipper color does not match what is on the picture of product description. I bought a hyper blue and all the pictures on the good description shows a blue zipper and looks good. I also saw couple of videos on Youtube, and Hyper blue got blue zipper. It`s frustrating the one I received got a black zipper.....

Very light & warm jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This jacket is very light, compact, & warm. It's pricey, but with the 30% discount, I feel like I got my $$$'s worth. As others have noted, the cuffs are slightly loose, but I didn't find it distracting or feel any drafts. I've been wearing it for about a week now, with the temperature ranging 15-40F. I'd say with just a t-shirt, 15F is probably it's lower limit, but I was comfortable in the 20's. If you're moving around a lot or add some layers, you could definitely wear it at lower temperatures.

Who are they designing these for?

Ok so a few things. This jacket is insanely light. I mean it. You will never really know how much it weighs because it always wants to float away.
That being said, who are they designing this thing for? There is no way to tighten the wrists they are about as open (and inelastic) as can be. You would have to have perfectly sized (and MASSIVE) wrists for the sleeves of this jacket to fit you properly. It's a shame, I really wanted to like it.

It's curious that you say that about the wrists. I have very small wrists for a man, and I've never noticed or had a problem with the wrist size of the jacket. I'm going to have to check again when I get back home!

Great review - completely agree about the cuffs being VERY large and open. My main issue with it...

Lightweight is an understatement..

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I severely under-estimated the meaning of Lightweight. This thing weighs next to nothing. It really is shocking.

Its packability is next in line for my praises, it stuffs pretty easily down into its own pocket, and since it weighs less than air, it adds no weight either.

Despite its lightweight nature, and fragile thin presence, this sucker holds its own in warming power. Looking forward to testing this in colder temps, but so far I have had to wear it with the zipper open to make sure I dont over heat.

The only down side to this jacket really only exists if you plan on using it while being active. It doesn't breathe SUPER well. I can see this thing getting hot on a hike up the mountain, which limits it to a single dimension of use: the inactive phase. Standing around, waiting in the cold? throw this sucker on.

All in all, its a stellar, top of the line down jacket. The fit is true to size, im 5'11" and 165lbs and a small is nice and snug on me. A pretty athletic trim makes it a great layering piece when necessary.

Responded on

How does a small fit you if you're 5'11?!? I'm the same height, weight 170lb, and am used to wearing a large shirt/coat/anything for my torso. Post a pic of you wearing the jacket? I'm actually very confused.

Responded on

I guess its just a preference thing, I like my mid layers to be snug without being overly tight. Smalls typically do it for me in everything but outer shells. I attached a photo above for "proof" it fits. I even have a hoodie on under it.

Responded on

These jackets run extremely large and most prefer them to fit a bit more snug.
