Super-lightweight insulation for your high-elevation pursuits.

Whether you're making a 4 a.m. summit push, ripping skins on bone-chilling dawn patrols, or standing at belay while your buddy figures out the crux moves, the Mountain Hardwear Men's Ghost Whisperer Hooded Down Jacket will fend off the cold without adding a bunch of weight to your load. With 800-fill down and a weight of only 8 oz, the Ghost Whisperer is the lightest in its class, and it utilizes Q.Shield down that resists moisture, so your warmth doesn't get sabotaged by water. The insulated hood warms your noggin while maintaining a low profile, and the stowable design lets you pack it in one of its hand pockets and throw it in your pack without it taking up a bunch of space.

    Extremely light weight and warm

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

There isn't much more I can say about the warmth and weight of this jacket that hasn't been echoed in all the other positive reviews. Mountain Hardware has been making this jacket for a long time for good reason - it simply does what it says it will do on the core requirements (warmth and weight). The Q.shield down is a very nice enhancement.

However, I have found a few items that I'm not too excited about and leave me quite frankly confused. The first being the zippers. They are way too small and don't track well at the bottom of the coat. Second, the lack of decent elastic cuffs leaving the arms exposed to the elements. The third would be no internal pockets.

Most of the issues I have are changes that have been made in the last few seasons, these mainly weren't issues in years past. Perhaps Mountain Hardware is trying to appeal to a larger group by redesigning this jacket for a more urban audience - hence zippers that you can't use well with gloves on.

Even with the draw backs listed above, I still give this a 4-star rating. Because, although having some inconveniences it still has the core features for alpine climbing and camping.

    Warmest Jacket Ever!

When I bought this jacket I was skeptic because of how light weight and thin it was. Well , now I'm a believer. Waiting on line for 20 minutes to buy a lift ticket in Kilington, VT, 9 degrees on the thermometer and blowing snow. Was completely comfortable layered with a t-shirt and a Spyder core sweater. Stayed warm all day. Great jacket I'm just nervous about the material. Seems a little thin but so far so good.

My brother uses this jacket for after surfing warmth without being super bulky and restricting. It compresses into a small ball for easy travel. Recently, he took this to Tahoe where the temps were in the 30's during the day and it kept him plenty warm. Definitely a great choice and the color pops!

    The best lightweight jacket!

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

    • Size Bought: Large

I first bought the Patagonia ultralight jacket. The large was too big and it felt like a garbage bag. The sounds it made with me only trying it one would make me go crazy. I looked around and saw the Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer. At first I didn't know much about the brand and I didn't know if I should give them a try. I called backcountry to get connected to a specialist. They told me to order a medium and large to see what would fit better on myself. He was telling me it's about how you want to feel comfortable with the activities you would be using it for. Let me tell you! I love this jacket and if it wasn't for the specialist I probably would have not bought it. I also own the Columbia heatzone 1000 and I still like this jacket better for what I use it for. Today in Chicago we got to 5 degrees! I had to use a fleece to make it work but did not feel the cold weather. Just remember it's never going to be warm like a parka but for the weight of the jacket and with using proper layering you will be fine.

one of the lightest down jackets made

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

This jacket makes a nice layering system. It has enough loft to keep you quite warm, yet not so much to interfere with layering. It weighs less than 8 ounces in medium and packs down might small. I'm 5'10", 153 and fit me perfectly. My only concern is that the down may have come from live plucked geese. Hope not.

light weight down jacket with minor flaw

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times
    • Fit:True to size
    • Size Bought: small

After two weeks of wearing the jacket in 20 to 40 degree Chicago weather, this jacket has performed excellently. The few flaws I have found is the two pockets are large but have no depth. The zipper opens to the very bottom, but only halfway up to the topmost portion. I find that putting gloves or a cap inside can easily slip and fall out. Also, the stitching seems to snag very easily to the zipper if not closed. My left arm sleeve snags every time and I see stitching has come loose.

Super Lightweight But Don't Be Fooled

Got rid of my marshmallow Mountain Hardware jacket because it was a beast. This jacket is like night and day and worth every penny. It packs ULTRA compact and fits like a glove. The hood fits fantastic and doesn't block your peripheral vision. Pockets are nice, but could be slightly larger.

The only room for improvement is with the main zipper. It's small...but very lightweight.

This is a must have piece of gear for ALL outdoor expeditions when the weather can get chilly.

Super Lightweight But Don't Be Fooled

    It's a keeper

    • Size Bought: medium

If you are in the market for a lightweight insulating layer with excellent warmth to weight ratio this is it. I think it's a good buy with a few caveats.

First, the PRO's about what I like:
    - trim athletic cut. I don't feel like a marsh mellow man in this jacket and it is tailored perfectly. I also own the Patagonia down sweater. While I love it, the fitting is not form fitting but boxy.
    - Down is treated with a hydro phobic material. While not waterproof, it is resistant.
    - Waist draw cord. Yes, while there isn't one for the hood, it still works.
    - Back of the jacket covers my butt.
    - Baffle design. It retains heat with larger panels.
    - Compact
    - Lifetime guarantee

A few CON's but not too many:
    - The loft doesn't seem as abundant as my Patagonia jacket. I think they could have put more in there. Feels missing.
    - Nylon ripstop is super thin and fragile. You have to protect it.
    - No hood adjustment
    - Missing an interior pocket or Napoleon outer pocket.
    - Price
    - Zipper. While I haven't put it to the test, some say the zipper has a tendency to split.
    - How the Down is sourced. Ethical treatment of animals is huge to me. BIG BIG KUDOS to Patagonia for how they process and treat the animals when getting their down. I suspect Mountain Hardware gets their down from the same source as everyone else. I don't know. This is part of the reason why I love Patagonia.

So there you have it. I like this jacket. The CON's didn't prevent me from keeping it. I really am glad I made this purchase. While the folks at Mountain Hardware are moving in the right direction with the Ghost Whisperer, it is lacking in several areas. At the end of the day all that matters is you look good and feel warm. It does just that. Hope this review helps in your decision. Fitting BTW I am 5'10" 175lbs. Arm length is perfect and the torso form fits. Get the Medium.

    Great Down Jacket!

I have owned this jacket for a little over a year. I have used this jacket for a belay jacket while climbing as well as hiking around in colder weather. The Outdry technology in this jacket is great. Even after getting the down wet it still keeps you warm. I have had issues with the zipper splitting from the bottom causing it to unzip and becoming difficult to unzip.

    Great Frigid Temperature Jacket

Instead of shelling out for a bulky winter coat I decided to get this instead. This jacket combined with a shell got me through the Boston winter comfortably.

    Great Catch

I scored this at a competitors member sale for 70$. It is my best purchase of 2015. This jacket quickly became my go-to in conditions >15 degrees. Holds up strongly in cold windy conditions. I have been caught in cold rain wearing it. The jacket is not waterproof, but will keep you dry for a bit if you get caught out. At 6'9" 220 the large cut actually works. If I hadn't picked it up for such a low price I would have gone with an XL for the extra two inches in the back. The sleeves reach an inch into my wrist, and the fit is fine. Overall this is a great product. PS whoever complained about throwing it in the wash... It's down, dry-clean it.

    Great addition to the arsenal!

I've had this Jacket about a month, and have yet to need it much (I live in Texas), but will be taking it to Rainier in June and N. Cascades in August. It so very light and seems warm so far. I'm 6'1" and about 167 lbs and my Medium fits great. It covers the neck warmly and well even without the hood up. The sleeves are a great length and I don't mind that they have only elastic. The sleeve opening is the perfect size - any smaller and it would be harder to get my hands through. The hood fits fine over a helmet and stays up well. Love the stuff pocket. Great jacket to add for versatility and warmth (and it looks awesome, too).

    It is not good quality

Actually I am a fun of this type of jacket. It is super light. I bought one Marmot Jacket and Mountain Hardware jacket in same order. Then I went to New York this January. The Marmot feels much warmer than the Mountain hardware , at that time I was a lit bit doubt that how a 800 fill down Mountain hardware jacket performed so bad in keeping warm, but I did not think about returning of it. Later the spring come, I washed the jacket, I was shocked, because after washing I found some place you can not see the down filling at all. The filling goes to some part of the jacket and never lay flat inside the jacket. Some places as thin as a T-shirt. Please see the picture I took. The Marmot was washed together with the Mountain Hardware. The Marmot was still good. I do not think the down in side the jacket is real 800 fill.

    It is not good quality

Actually it's never recommended to just wash it in cold water. You ruined it .You're supposed dry clean or use down wash liquid Revivex or Nikwax in a front load washer only & dryer on permanent press low setting w/3 tennis balls , pulling it out every 10 mins so you don't melt fabric, till it's dry

    Great jacket, great price

    • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Purchased when on sale for basically half list price, and absolutely love it. Very light weight, and packs down into its own pocket to about the size of a bottle of Gatorade. Fits and moves well; so that I can sleep in it, hike in it with my pack, or just lounge around in it. Excellent product for backpacking - because of its small pack size and weight, I carry it now all the time - and just marvel at how much warmth it brings for so small a hit on my base weight. Highly recommended.

    Impressive

Short hike on local mtn. 40 steady drizzle. Light polypro base layer, Marmot Variant jacket and only the Ghost Whisperer against the rain and breeze. Kept me warm despite getting soaked. Moderate climb generated heat and sweat but did not get chilled. Lost maybe 25% loft but still shed most water and did the job. Obviously not meant to be water proof and would not count on below freezing but a good thermal layer that is too light and compressible not to throw in your pack.

    Cuffs?

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit:True to size
    • Size Bought: Lg

Great jacket, everything I expected except the cuffs suck! I got a large,5-10,195 and it fits perfectly. Nice and warm but the cuffs are huge! No seal around my wrist, cold air and snow go right up the arms! I am going to try and find a fix because I love the jacket but come on Mountain Hardware! Also no stuff sack or pocket to stuff it in.

Does anyone know if the yellow is translucent? (And you can see the down clusters), giving it that dirty appearance?

Let's say I have 200-260 merino wool base and polartec fleece layer. Will this jacket withstand Alaska's -40 with or without a 3 layer membrane over it? I mean both active and resting times. Thank you!
