Hooded Compressor PL Insulated Jacket - Women's

As you hop off of the quad at the top of Targhee, you take a minute to take in the overwhelming sight of the Teton Range. The air is cold and clear at nearly 10,000 feet, and the wind is blowing with a serrated edge. You’d probably be miserably cold if you weren’t zipped up in the Women’s Hooded Compressor PL Insulated Jacket from Mountain Hardwear. But (thanks to the Compressor’s high-tech warmth) all you have to worry about is getting the settings on your camera right.

  • Micro Climate Zoning design strategically uses more insulation at the core and lighter insulation in the sleeves and sides so less heat builds up, and you have more freedom to move
  • Lunar ripstop AXF with DWR gives durable moisture protection that lasts even after 100 washings
  • PrimaLoft ECO simulates natural down so you stay warm, and, since it is made up of both recycled and virgin polyester fibers, it creates less stress on the environment
  • External Pockets are set high so you can still access essentials without removing your pack or harness
  • Low-profile cuffs and smooth ripstop fabric make layering simple so you don’t have to be a gymnast just to get your shell on

Bottom Line: That is one hell of a view.

Quite shocked

This is the first MH jacket I've owned and I was a little aprehensive about purchasing it after reading the other review. I got a great deal on Steep&Cheap so went ahead and ordered it anyway. When I first took it out of the packaging I was totally disappointed in how light and flimsy it was. I was looking to update my ski jacket with this and it was not what I had expected in a ski jacket at all. After a couple of test runs I have changed my mind. I have not yet worn it out skiing but I have taken a couple of easy snowshoe walk in teen weather in MT and this jacket kept me super warm, almost too much so. I was very amazed at the heat factor and can't wait to try it out when the temps drop into the single digits or below. I also must say that the fit is quite flattering and not boxy or long in the sleeves like the last review stated. I am a medium size and the medium jacket fits beautifully. The compression hood was a little awkward at first but I am developing an admiration for it.

Total disappointment - And I'm a big MH Fan!

The proportions of this jacket coupled with the exterior fabric make this jacket a saggy sack. First, I'm a huge Mountain Hardwear fan and own several MH jackets from down to fleece to shells. I bought this jacket after buying it two years in a row for my son in the youth version and really digging on the quality and the fit. But this women's version is boxy, the sleeves are loose and long from the shoulder down and the fabric is so fluid that the hood simply does not work. First, because the sleeves are so long and wide but then end in a gathered semi-elastic, you get the puff and bunch up factor. The coat is boxy, so even at the right size where the shoulders fall in the right place, the rest of the coat just hangs. What I like about the youth version is it is fitted at the bottom, almost like a wide band of the same fabric cut a bit slimmer, but despite the MH specs and photo showing this for the women's version, it doesn't work. I noticed MH indicates it "updated" this jacket for 2010, so not sure if the former version was any better. But mine is an immediate return.
