Description

Roomy three-season tent for short backpacks and car camping.

Mountain Hardwear updated its Hammerhead 3 Tent for 2011 to include a fully removable zip-out panel that lets you shed six ounces from the tent's overall trail weight. Yet it features 45 square feet of floor space, making the it über-roomy for three people. Like everything else it makes, Mountain Hardwear packed this tent full of tech and features that will keep you comfortable and secure in the outdoors.
  • Waterproof floor and fly provide excellent protection from stormy weather
  • Canopy's large mesh surface area provides excellent ventilation and condensation control
  • Canopy's body panel zips in for greater privacy and protection and unzips for better ventilation and weight savings
  • Simple pole design and color coded loops make for easy set-up in the dark
  • Two roomy vestibules give you plenty of room to store muddy shoes and wet gear
  • Light pitch option lets you set up the tent with just the poles, fly, and footprint (footprint sold separately)

On Mountain Hardwear’s websight, they list that this tent has 2 vents on the rain fly. That’s true for the previous model… but not this one. They did away with them. Don’t know why but I wasn’t happy to see it (especially because they said the only difference between this model and the previous model was the fully removable zip out panel).

I am a fanatic about researching products before I buy them so that I know what I’m getting. When I pitched the thing in my living room for the first time, I wasn’t too happy. I expect a lot from a good company like Mountain Hardwear and not having there specs right is disappointing. Hopefully this doesn’t translate into condensation on the inside or any water coming in from the fly when I open the door.

Other than my living room, haven’t had a chance to test it out, but I hope it’s as bomb proof as the reviews say it is. Just don’t get why they lost the vents?

Been using this tent a ton this spring/summer and I love it. Tons of room and what a view! One whole panel zips out so you just have the netting and nothing else. If you want privacy, just zip the panel back in. Such a cool idea to have a huge 'window' into the beautiful world one often finds the tent pitched. Double doors make in and out access easy, which we all love. No climbing over one another.

Sat through a really nasty summer rain storm and we were dry and cozy all night.

The tent may be heavy but it's bombproof.

Once upon a time I took this tent to a music festival. While I was 50' away relaxing with the neighbors, a tripper that wasn't having a good time stumbled in to our campsite. To my horror, he fell over on the tent and started rolling around -- we quickly tended to the situation. After trying (and failing) to coax this guy, we returned to the disheveled campsite to find the tent had popped itself back up with no damage at all! Not even a bent pole. Incredible design.

This tent is amazing. It has kept us dry time after time in a Uintah Mountain storm. For some reason, there was a little water on the floor, but that must have been brought inside by us. It is very heavy, though. I weighed it at 8 lbs 7.5 ounces total weight, and 9 lbs 6 oz with the footprint and 4 extra stakes. Packs pretty small, is roomy, and has a ton of vents. You can literally zip away the top and sides of the tent for hot nights, or close them for cold nights. This is also a super sturdy freestanding tent. Would give it 5 stars, but it is so heavy...

Great tent! my only gripe is that the doors are very small and it makes entry and exit uncomfortable. The zip off panel is awesome when the weather is nice!

Just a quick look at a mountain hardwear hammer head 3 person tent. I have received this tent to check out and review for motorcycle camping and as a overall three season tent. It has an acceptable pack size and is still light enough to hike with if needed. Over the summer I will be checking it out to see just how versatile it is and if it lives up to all its hype of being so great and water proof.
