The Mountain Hardwear Hammerhead 3 tent has 46 sq ft of floor space, and an additional 20 sq ft of vestibule room, making it Mountain Hardwear's roomiest three-person tent. In addition, the Hammerhead 3 gives you 4.5 feet of interior height. Two large D-shape side doors stay off the ground when open, and are made of mesh no-see-um netting to keep air flowing while halting pests. The ceiling panel rolls back for additional ventilation and communication with the outside world. The roomy vestibule at each door gives you plenty of room to drop shoes and extra gear for when the neighbors come to visit. The Hammerhead 3 sleeps up to 3 people. Combine your tent with the Hammerhead 3 Footprint for maximum protection from the ground.
Bottom Line: Hang the disco ball and invite the neighbors over for an evening of gin rummy in the Mountain Hardwear Hammerhead 3.
I love this tent from the moment I took it out of the shipping box. The only packaging was a stuff sac and a tag! No extra garbage. Putting the tent together was really easy. The poles are a nice color coded anodized aluminum. The tent material is really light weight, including the floor. I did not buy the foot print, but will be shortly. I would say it is a must have for protecting the floor unless you are camping on the beach.
The screen windows are well thought out and huge. I like how you can leave the triangular "moonroof" open, but still close all the other windows. One thing that did not make sense was the main front window, the flap only unzips on 2 sides, but it still works. I did not use the rain fly as the weather right now is clear and 70 at night, but I did attach it briefly just to make sure I knew how it works. The large pulls on the zippers are bright orange and easy to find/grab.
While this is a 3 person tent I bought it to primarily use as a 2 person tent with my son and a tent when kayaking the Everglades. The tent can be compressed pretty small, but as it is shipped, it is huge. That being said, it is nice to see a company provide a stuff sac that is large enough to fit a tent and all supplies in without having to spend forever trying to tight roll it.
The internal netting storage is pretty neat. There is a small and large mesh pocket on each side of the tent. Their are also three loops at the top for attaching the optional mesh storage net. I plan on buying that and the foot print before my next outing.
I did not pay the $300 MSRP and got for about half on steepandcheap. I doubt I would pay full price if that was the only option, but not because it isn't worth every penny... I just like my money.
I've had this tent for 3 months and have slept a few nights in it. Left it setup for a week to see how it stood up to the elements - excellent. The amount of mesh is fantastic, great views out the main mesh like watching a big screen TV after a day on the trail. I like the two side doors, so no stepping on anyone if you have 2 people using it. For 2 people it is very roomy, 3 would be fine. Very easy to setup and the option of using the footprint with the fly adds versatility, I haven't done this yet since it is summer and the bugs would kill me. I am not a minimalist, so it is heavier than my 2 man REI 4 season, but I like the extra room. I think it is a tad over 9 lbs and is a little bigger, but again no big deal for me. The way you can zip up panels to cover the mesh makes me think this would be a good 3.5 season tent. Vestibules are small and you could fit your pack, but then the door will be blocked, only hit I have, but not a deal breaker. I would highly recommend this tent.

Just a quick look at a mountain hardwear hammer head 3 person tent. I have received this tent to check out and review for motorcycle camping and as a overall three season tent. It has an acceptable pack size and is still light enough to hike with if needed. Over the summer I will be checking it out to see just how versatile it is and if it lives up to all its hype of being so great and water proof.
This tent has been great for the couple of times we've been able to use it. It's comfortable for my boyfriend, who is 6'2" although with our 115 lb Great Dane mix and 70 lb Lab it is somewhat of a tight fit (but only because the dogs seem to think they should stretch out completely). Without the dogs, 3 people could fit just fine. The tent's ceiling panel is great when the weather is nice... nothing like being able to see the stars from the comfort of your tent, or waking up to a sunrise over the mountains. So far no issues with anything breaking or being damaged. This tent is great!
We love this tent, it's easy and fast to put together. Rainfly works well. There is lots of room to stretch out and play jenga with the kids. Able to fit me, wife and 2 toddlers in there. I give it 4.5 stars, wish vestibule space were bigger.
I've seen an interior pic of the last season model of this tent -- it seems that on the opposing side of the window, there's a smaller mesh window. Is the 2009 model the same?
And are the doors really mesh? The photo doesn't really do justice to the description in that regard. If they are mesh, do they also have an option to zip for privacy?
The doors on the Hammerhead Tents have a mesh panel and a nylon panel combined making it literally a 3.5 season tent! Also, they work great in the desert due to the convertible nature of the tent and the fact that you can zip it completely closed during those pesky spring wind storms!
I have had this tent for four years now and it has never let me down. A pole broke once and mountain hardware promptly replaced it. It is quite warm on cold nights and very spacious. My only complaint is that it is a little heavy for backpacking but that isn't really what it is meant for. Overall great product.
Spacious (I'm 6'1") with plenty of headroom to change clothes. Great zippers and poles and great footprint (get it). Back Country has awesome online staff and I was able to research with the specialist online and get the perfect tent for me and mine.
