The Hammerhead 2 Tent has been Mountain Hardwear’s best-selling summer shelter for good reason—lots of space, dual vestibules, and tons of mesh to keep inside temps cool. Hit the trails and throw up this Mountain Hardwear tent when you get to camp, and you’ll see for yourself.

  • Dual doors for easy entry and exit
  • Fully taped fly to ensure no leaks
  • Pitch Light configuration lets you use the fly and available footprint together
  • SVX windows increase interior light and let you check the weather
  • Color coded poles and clips allow quick and easy pitching

Bottom Line: The one everyone wants.

The head of the Copper Spur UL2 is 10" wider than the foot. That gives each person 26" of room where you need it most. A Therm-a-Rest is 20" wide x 2 is 40" & you have an extra 12" left over. The tapered floor is 52" @ the head & 42" @ the foot. Each person has their own door & vestibule. Very comfortable for two.

Had this tent out last night in 30 degree temp and 3 inches of wet heavy snow. Bone dry inside, no tent sagging, vestibules protected all my gear, and accessible without any snow getting inside off the fly. Easy to line out. Very solid.

Hi,
I am just starting in backpacking and I really like the Hammerhead 2 tent I have read a few reviews and talked to some people I have heard that mountain hardwear is a great brand but I have also heard that this tent is a little heavy I Just want to know If it really is to heavy or if those people are just light weight freaks

I am looking for a good tent to buy

maughanwe. Yes, the tent is a little heavy compared to other 2-person tents on the market. But, it is arguable whether or not those tents are as versatile as the Hammerhead 2/3. For Spring '11, the Hammerhead's utilize a removable fabric panel in the roof of the tent to create one of the only truly convertible tents on the market. Because of this fabric panel and the overall design of the tent you do gain a little weight but you also gain what I would call edge season versatility. Going to the desert on the spring time and it might snow? No problem. Going to the high country over Labor Day and the weather is forecast to be less than perfect? No problem. Without going with a much heavier and durable 4-season tent you get true three season versatility out of the slightly heavier Hammerhead design. Again, as I mentioned earlier, in the S'11 version of the Hammerhead, the convertible fabric panel is removable! I hope this info helps.

I agree with Jeff entirely. Even though it's a larger and heavier version of what you're looking for in a 2-person tent, just to give you a perspective on the differences, we use our Hammerhead 3 for short hikes where total load weight isn't as important a factor, some winter trips and for car camping. Great bombproof tent, but yes, a bit too far on the heavy side. MHW makes some fine gear, including some great lightweight tents, but I'm again with Jeff on the two suggestions he's offered from Big Agnes. In fact, our 3-person "backpacking" tent is the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3. The weight differential between the two tents is noticeable. Another alternative I could suggest would be the MSR Carbon Reflex 2. A little pricier, but one of the lightest in its class @ under 3lbs w/o the footprint.

In my opinion this tent is heavy. There are many other 2-person tents that weigh two & three pounds less. In fact there are three person tents that weigh less. Check out the Copper Spur UL2 & Emerald Mountain SL2 made by Big Agnes. Here are the links to them:

one problem

I bought this tent in 2005 for endurance mountain bike races. It seems that it rains for nearly every damn event...hard. So it's definitely been put through the ringer of sorts. I do like the tent, quick set up, full fairly heavyweight fly, ventilation, and it cleans up well. My main and only complaint is with the entrance. Whenever you go to get into the tent, the vestibule flap falls into the opening, draining water into the tent. It's a poor design. You either have to make sure you shake the rain off the vestibule, or fold it over to the side (and then it slides off most of the time).

Looking at the MH HH3. MH site does not have the updated version info. Does anyone know if the materials used for the 2010 model canopy and fly are ripstop?

Rob. I just pulled this info off the Mountain Hardwear site. It is under the "Specs" tab on the HH3 page. The material specs are current. So, the canopy is made with a combo of ripstop and mesh. The details are below:

Canopy = 68D Polyester Ripstop with a DWR and 20D Nylon Knit Mesh.

Fly = 75D 190T Polyester Taffeta with a 1500mm Polyester Urethane coating and DWR for waterproofness.

I hope this info helps!

I'm tall - this one was a great buy

By:
February 10, 2011

I'm 6'4, and I don't curl up in bed, I like to stretch out, and still have a little room at the foot and head of the bed so I'm not touching the storm windows. This tent allows that kind of sprawling action. Not super light, but not super expensive, either, and super high quality. Good buy, good length.

Hi
Can ALL of the mesh be covered by storm flaps that zip shut from inside the tent?
Thanks.

Hey Chris, all of the mesh can be covered by flaps that zip up (inside) to create a fully enclosed tent. The fly will then do its job keeping the weather out. Because of the configuration of this tent and the multiple ways you can arange the flaps, it works great in summer - full mesh - all the way into winter -fully zipped up with fly. It's rated as a 3 season tent but is definitely burly enough to handle basic winter conditions...think of it as a 3.5 season tent. There are many venting options as well that will allow you to manage interior condensation in the colder temps.

Hope this helps

Great summer tent.

By:
April 13, 2009

this is a good temt, but I find the vestibules are not quite roomy enough for the gear you want to store outside. Also, the vestibules are not quite adequate for cooking from if the weather is not ideal.
I think there are lighter weight options out there for this tents size, just barely enough room for 2 adults.

That said, the tent is easy to set up, comfortable to use and is holding up well. ...a good choice for an easy weekend pack trip in summer or fair conditions.

Does the newer version of this tent (green) have the mesh in the doors that can be zipped shut, like the old (blue) version? It doesn't look like it from the pictures.

Bkuti. If you are wondering whether or not you can zip the doors closed... you can. In other words, it has the mesh in the doors that can be zipped shut. Various things like the poles and zippers have been upgraded in the new version of the Hammerhead but the design remains the same. Why fix it if it ain't broke? Hope this info helps!

Good but not great

By:
July 22, 2009

I purchased the Hammerhead 2 a year or so ago, and I have been on several car camping weekends with it. The tent is structurally sound and there is fair amount of room inside. The two person tent is just that, but barely. It is not exactly light, and the dimensions of the tent when packed is a little too big for my liking.

Overall, for the money the tent is not bad. I think I will be looking for a lighter tent in the coming months though.

Also if the tent packs to big for your liking, you may consider strapping the poles to the outside of your pack, and putting everything else in a compression sack. This, as you know, will significantly cut down on the packed size. The bags tents and sleeping bags come in from the factory are meant to be storage bags, not necessarily what you use to pack it in for a trip.

Sounds like you may have been looking for a different tent when you bought this one. This is not meant to be an ultralight tent. The Hammerhead is meant to be a super durable tent you can use in almost any set of conditions. The ability of this tent to adapt to so many different conditions is thanks to its plethora of ventilation options. The huge main flap can be opened fully or partially, and the flap at the foot of the tent can be opened as much or as little as you want. The reason the tent weighs a little more than some of the other tents of comparable size and design, is due to the fact that it has the ability to be a summer, fall, or even winter tent comfortably with all the ventilation capabilities - extra flaps / options = a little bit o' extra weight. To me the little extra weight is completely worth the ability to be able to use this tent in almost any situation, sans mountaineering style blizzards. I've had a Hammerhead for about 8 years now, and have recommended it to everyone looking for a great all around tent. I've found that the tent has plenty of room for two people, unless you try to pile a ton of gear inside of it with you. There's no problem getting two people and two packs on the inside if you really need to, but why do you buy a tent with two huge vestibules anyway? So you don't have to put all that gear inside with you, and so you can stretch out in all that extra space. I love the Hammerhead, it's a great tent, and if at some point I have to replace the one I have, I will definitely be purchasing another one.
