Mountain Hardwear made the Guardian Backpack out of the same burly nylon fabric used in the expedition duffel bags, so you can be sure this pack can take whatever you dish out. While the Guardian Backpack comes with city-ready features like a 17in laptop pocket and shoulder-mounted cell phone pouch, it can also take on a day hike with ease. Mountain Hardwear added two side stretch pockets to keep your water within reach, and the 1450cu inch main compartment easily holds enough clothing and snacks for a day-long outing.

I bought this pack for school in Seattle, and so far it has been great. My stuff has stayed dry even with substantial rain, and my computer is very well protected in the computer slot. Even though this is the smaller of the two pack with this design there is still plenty of room to carry lots of book, and the top loading design is great.
