Pouring rain would be the only thing that would require you to choose your hard shell over this jacket.

The Men's G50 Softshell Jacket blocks wind like your hardshell, insulates like your fleece midlayer, and breathes like your baselayer, so you might say it's versatile. Mountain Hardwear's designers engineered this jacket using flexible softshell material that gives you the freedom to move while you chop wood at camp, ski on spring days at the resort, or rack up mileage during a brisk fall hike.

  • Relaxed fit leaves ample room underneath for your baselayer
  • AirShield synthetic fabric is lightweight, it dries quickly, and it has a touch of stretchy flexiblity
  • AirShield technology allows the body fabric to block wind, repel light moisture and precipitation, and breathe to help you control temperature underneath
  • Dual hem drawcords provide quick fit adjustment

First Impression

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

Just got the G50 to replace my TNF Bionic which had to be returned bc the zipper was broken. I opted to give this a shot for several reasons, 1. My wife has a Bionic, 2. Every collage kid has a Bionic, and just wanted to give something else a shot since I had the opportunity. This does run larger then other jackets as I was an XL in the Bionic and I ordered a Large and it fits fine other then the arms are a little big (I'm only 5'3). The lining of the G50 is softer then the Bionic; however, there seems to be less of it on the chest area then the Bionic. The pockets on the G50 seem to be oddly place as compared to the Bionic where they seem to be placed higher up on the coat.

Those are just my first impressions and have not got to put it to the test with the elements. I will update my review once I get to be exposed to various elements.

Apex bionic beware!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Bought this because everywhere I went there was 4 other guys wearing a north face bionic. This is the replacement and I wish I hadn't ever went trendy with TNF that is excellent gear...but add Yoga pants and Ugg boots and you've got the uniform of every college girl in NY!!! The stiffness of the jacket stops the wind amazingly and sheds rain like a hard shell. Add a monkey man as a base and you are set for the coldest of NY days!!! This jacket is my go too snow shoeing jacket. I only worry about the heavy briar bushes when I rock this jacket. Will not let you down!

G50 is great but...

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

First I think this is a great jacket and I can't wait to get my exchange. I wore it a couple of times in low 30's to 50's and it kept me warm with only a t-shirt (I do run a bit warm naturally) Seems to be windproof but need more time in stronger wind gusts. I own and have tried on several Mountain Hardwear jackets and this is very light weight considering its warmth. Other softshells and fleeces were heavier for the same warmth. My problem was sizing; it is hard to compare sizes between softshells and fleeces from MH. I am 6'0", 185 LBS with broad shoulders and wear large shirts so when I say the G50 was big, it looked like an extra large on me and could layer a down jacket underneath. Other large MH softshells and fleeces fit fine. I would have given 5 stars if the sizing was more accurate, other than that, the G50 is exactly what I wanted, a warmer, windproof, water resistant, breathable light weight shofshell. I encourage you to take a chance on the G50. Chive On!

Nice jacket, but restricted in arms.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs small

I am sure that this jacket would be plenty warm for most high output activities in colder weather. MH coats fit me nicely in the torso and sleeves. I ordered a size Small and I wear a size 38S suit jacket. My Arc'teryx Epsilon SV has free range of movement, even with the Atom LT underneath.

Fantastic Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

I needed a lightweight, form-fitting wind-resistant softshell for the the spring and fall seasons, and this is pretty much perfect. Mountain Hardware describes the fit as relaxed, and that's true (which is why I selected 'True to size').

The fabric is a bit stiffer (crisper?) than a true softshell, which is fine by me. I needed the windproof feature more than just another softshell.

I exchanged a medium for a small, because I didn't intend to layer under it.

I'm 5'8", 147 lbs, with a 38 chest, 32 waist.

It's midsummer now, which is probably why it's on sale. I'll report back this fall if I think of anything to report.

Mountain Hardware quality is outstanding.

This Mountain Hardware G50 softshell is nothing if not versatile. It does indeed block wind. It sheds snow. It breathes. I took an outing around town when the temp was hovering around 20*F and blowing snow. It performed with perfection. I was shielded from the wind and snow and with only a t-shirt underneath, I was totally comfortable. Just for grins, I tried it under my down jacket as a layer and it not only fit well, it added a great amount of warmth. And if that isn't enough, the quality and looks of this nifty unit is perfect for those party scenes and around town look-abouts. This is my new go-to jacket. Light enough to fit in a pack and stylish enough to wear for recreation and entertainment scenes. Do yourself a favor and slip into one of these will feel like you've evolved into another level of comfort. The FEEL is fantastic. Buy it. I did. And boy am I glad I did.
