EV 3 Tent 3-Person 4-Season

The Mountain Hardwear EV 3 was designed with help from Ed Viesturs to create the ultimate, ultralight 3-person 4-season tent for mountaineering and alpine climbing. This single-wall tent is made with highly breathable Conduit FR fabric and uses zip-closable mesh vents on the body to increase ventilation. The EV 3 uses four Scandium poles and an Expedition Tension Arch to stand up to Himalayan-force winds without adding undue weight. The EV 3 has floor zipper by the door where you can open it up, so you don't track snow into your shelter from the storm. The best part is that the EV 3 tent sleeps you and your two rope-mates at a weight of only 6lb 13oz.

Bottom Line: Lighten you load and still be able to sit out the big storm in the Mountain Hardwear EV 3 tent.

Best built 4 seson tent in the last 15 years

By:
June 7, 2011

After my adventure on Mt. Hood last week with the EV3 in 60 MPH winds, I am convinced this it the best built 4 season tent in the last 15 years. This tent excelled in adverse conditions. And comfortably held 3 climbers and their gear.

This tent seems interesting and looks "cute", but in alpine mountaineering considering there is no vestibule where do you keep your outer shell of your boots, your crampons, how do you cook in a raging blizzard, and how do you limit snow from getting into your tent?

Check out the Trango 3.1 and all your questions will be answered. If you want a vestibule and a double walled tent it is going to cost you in weight. The single walled EV3's packed weight is 7.79lbs. The double-walled Trango 3.1's packed weight is 11.64lbs. High on Annapurna IV Ed Viesturs was pretty psyched on his "cute" EV2 at their high camp the night before summit day. The zipper in the floor of the built in vestibule helps get rid of snow that you track in and when you are cooking inside... be sure and leave the door cracked!

Great Tent but could use mesh door

By:
August 9, 2006

Just returned from 7 day trip in the mountains of Colorado and Utah. The EV3 was fantastic. Light, easy and quick to set up and break down, warm and well ventilated. It is palatial quarters for two persons and all their gear, with plenty of room to sprawl. One night of the trip featured particularly high winds and, with the guys staked tight, the tent was "unflappable." Most of the other parties were awake most of the night as their tents flapped and generally blew about in the winds, but we had no trouble sleeping. The only minor complaint is the lack of an inner mesh door. I know that this is a "stripped down" mountaineering tent, but the slight additional weight would greatly extend the utility of this tent, since, while the ventilation is generally excellent, you need to make a choice between ventilation and bugs once you are at lower elevations. Overall though, quite pleased with this tent. It will clearly be my first choice tent for higher elevations and fall/winter trips.

EV 3 or Trango 3.1? I am not worried about wieght. Which tent performs better. 1. set up 2. comfirt 3. durability 4. keeping snow out of tent and keeping gear dry

Depends if you are not concerned with weight then I would probably go for the Trango 3.1. If weight is a concern then the single wall EV3 would be the way to go. The 3.1 has an independent vestibule that could help with keeping snow out of the tent. In the EV 3 it is incorporated into the main body of the tent. Again, the main difference is single wall vs. double wall. Set-up, comfort, and durability, I think are similar with the EV 3 being slightly easier to set up due to the fact that it is a single wall tent. Hope this info helps!

EV3

By:

Love it! Warm, well ventilated for cold weather, guy'd out well, pitches quickly, many mesh pockets keeping small gear at easy reach, light weight for its size, loop on the inside top for attaching light for reading.
Plenty of room for 2 plus equipment, questionable at best for 3 (I wouldn't do it, it'll be much too personal).
Looks awesome. Don't forget the EV3 Footprint.
