Cold, wet weather can make you feel like you're pushing for the summit of Rainier when you're really just walking through a storm to get to work, but the Mountain Hardwear Downtown II Down Coat keeps you warm and dry even in heavy-hitting weather. Waterproof Dry.Q fabric blocks heavy snow and even rain, and it is highly breathable. Lightweight, highly compressible 650-fill duck down holds in heat so even if you're standing around waiting for your train or watching your kid play old-school pond hockey, you won't feel the chill.

A grip of pocket space, including two fleece-lined hand-warmer pockets and two large chest pockets hold your essentials. A zip-off hood keeps your head dry, while the ribbed cuffs block cold air that would otherwise move up your sleeves.

Great Coat - 2 Way Zipper

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs large

I returned a North Face coat I had bought, because it did not have a 2 way zipper. I am short and anytime I would bend, such as to shovel snow, the bottom of the zipper would rip out. Could not find ANY North Face jackets that have a 2-way zipper any more. This coat is awesome. Fits roomy, very warm, longer like a parka style coat....and 2-way zipper.

Too Big

  • Fit:Runs large

I was amazed when I put the XXL on. If you're built like an NFL tight end , that will fit you.

I'm 6' and 230lbs and drowned in it. I'll have to size down to the large just to get my hands out of the sleeves.

From what I've read on MH's site and reviews from various other retailers, the medium fits true to size. From there, the cut must grow exponentially.

Nice coat, overall. Love the 'Duffel' color.

Solid Jacket

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times
  • Fit:Runs large

I am a college student attending a relatively cold midwestern university. I wear this jacket often, along with another heavy down parka I purchased from Eddie Bauer last holiday season. The jacket has been great so far - I wear it on the way to class, as well as out to dinner, and for me it is a nice combination of functionality and minimalist styling. I've never been one for huge logos and outlandish colors, so this jacket is a great fit for me in those areas. I am a 6' 190 lb. guy and initially ordered this jacket in a large, but returned it in favor of a medium, which fits much better. The jacket is very warm, especially with one or two layers underneath. All in all, it is a great jacket that I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a functional parka that looks good in any situation.

Well made, with a few quibbles

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

This is a very well made coat that could be awesome, but for a few details. I read many a review praising the hand-warmer pockets, that they are well insulated within the layers of down. This is not the case (at least on the 2013 model). The pockets are very large, and extend only within the outermost shell membrane. They are very thinly lined. Not the plunge into warmth I expected. Also, the pockets have the typical weather flap at the opening, but are fasted closed with one tiny plastic snap across the entire 8" or so of the opening. The snaps seem pointless, and one wishes for at least a couple velcro tabs. The collar area with the ribbed knit feature is (for me) uncomfortably snug and does not stretch as its core is the outer shell material. The parka is long to mid thigh and is cut pleasantly trim, but these features conspire to limit mobility and movement, particularly sitting or getting in and out of a car. If the zipper started a couple inches higher it would compliment the urban intentions of the design..leaving a small slit, and allowing the thigh to rise. The coat seems plenty warm for average winter life and there is room for layering (I live in Maine). I ordered a medium and I am 5'11" and 165lbs, a good size for me. In the end I need a design allowing for more activity and more neck room when zipped up. 4 stars because my complaints are likely just my personal peeves. It's a good coat.

Great winter coat

Downtown or Upper East Side,

No matter where you are, the coat will keep you warm through the New York winter. I got mine in "Manhattan" Black, of course. Upcountry tech makes it to the city.

Do you have a temperature rating for this...

Do you have a temperature rating for this coat? And does it have a two-way zipper and an interior pocket?

Coats don't generally have temperature ratings since it's so comfort is so subjective and depends on activity level (most) as well as layers underneath.

They can rate sleeping bags a bit better since activity level is not a factor (and yet, bag comfort ratings are still quite subjective...)
