Mountain Hardwear beefed up the Polartec Power Stretch fleece in the Men’s Desna Jacket with an advanced surface-fusion polymer to create a water- and abrasion-resistant surface called HardFace. You get the stretch, warmth, and breathability of fleece with the protection of a soft shell for incredibly versatile protection. Mountain Hardware extended the collar to the hood to create a shield for your face in cold, windy conditions, and left the side panels with straight-up Power Stretch for mobility and breathability where you need it most.
Weight. 12oz versus 15oz: Pockets (Tough call for those who like pockets), quarter zip as opposed to full zip. Also stitching appears to be different on the sleeves for the hoodie. Likely more reinforcement?
Just received my SMALL Desna and it's a snug 2nd layer as I was after. I'm 5'10" with 36" inch chest and the dimensions in the sleeve are pretty spot on too.
The length seems a fraction though... it fits more like a pullover than a jacket and only just comes down past my hip bones (22" from shoulder to the bottom of the jacket). If I lift my arms I worry it will expose the guts a bit.
It's summer in Australia so haven't had a chance to see how well it works! I'm hoping its promise of some wind resistance holds up, as I don't want to have to take a soft shell as well as a Paclite shell when skitouring & snowcamping....
To be honest, however, it just feels like a regular fleece. It doesn't have the density of these heavy 'windfleeces' you see around and I'm not sure it would keep out more than a breeze.
But the hood does feel cozy under an outer shell...it'll save you trying to find a pocket for a beanie or a balaclava.
Hi, Loving the look of the Desna hoody but unsure of sizing. I'm 5" 7, 37 inch chest, approx 145 pounds...I'm usually a small (for instance with a synchro jacket, snug) but a medium with others (eg Offwidth and mercurial jacket). I'm after a trim fit but with a wee bit of space..but definately not baggy ! Oh, and not too far below my waist...would you guys and girls recommend a Small or a medium ? many thanks

This layer is perfect for skiing and other cold weather activities that require face and neck protection and breathability. This is much better than a balaclava since it can be zipped down the chin when full protection is not needed. The material is typical powerstretch with an interesting blend of nylon. The fit is very slim, this is the only garment that I had to size up in. Overall I can not imagine a better midlayer than this one here.
James. While I appreciate your review/comments I just had to say that the Desna Jacket is trying to be nothing more than a Desna Jacket.
fruhjm1. The Desna is made with a Hard-faced Powerstretch fabric from Polartec (think softshell-like) and is designed to be warm and highly wind resistant. In my opinion, it is a different beast than the R1 and should be thought of differently. With that said, to each his own and enjoy which ever one suits your fancy as they are both fine jackets.
R1. No questions. The R1 hoody is lighter, has a better hood because of the offset zipper, uses a gridded fleece that's far more breathable than the powerstretch used on the Desna, and the R1 has thumbloops. In fact, I'm wearing my R1 right now while answering your question. The R1 is a classic, and the Desna tries but fails to compare to it,
I bought this for a lightweight instulation layer. Its weight is very similar to the Patagonia R1. The biggest difference is that this jacket is a fleece which also provides pretty good wind resistance. Unlike many fleece jackets, this would make a passable stand alone jacket during the wintertime. At 6'3", 175lbs, I often have issues with sleeve lengther. I bought this in size large and it fits my slender frame well and the sleeves are long enough for me to utilyze the thumb holes. The inside has a soft, fuzzy surface which provides a very cozy feeling. The hood is obviously unconventional, but functional. In cold windy conditions, it makes a passable baclava, but does not quite cover my nose. It makes a much better neck gaiter. I had concerns the high zipper would irritate my neck when not zipped all the way up, but I've not had any issues.
I've thought about using this for a running jacket, but likely won't. I love running in a softshell as they provide good insulation while still breathing well and keeping the wind and rain off you. A good softshell also gives your skin a little room as shells aren't intended to hug your body. But, I think this jacket is still more fleece than softshell. I think the fuzzy interior surface would feel too "huggy" and "muggy" once you got heated up and sweaty.
The back does drop a bit more than than the front (by about an inch). Some of the appearance you are seeing is an artifact of the photo but there is some (minor) difference between length in the front and back. The drop hem will allow the back to stay tucked under a harness much more easily when the wearer bends over.
It really broke my heart to return this fleece, because for the most part, it it awsome. It is exactly what I was looking for, except for the hood. The hood just did not work for me. I even contemplated keeping it and cutting off the hood to use just as a zip up collar fleece! It is that cool of a fleece. The problem with the hood isn't the chin - I liked how high it zipped up to protect the face - the problem is the top, or head part. The top of the hood is so small and tight that it barely coverd my forehead. There is no way you could wear any kind of hat under this hood - not a baseball style, or even a watch cap - no way. Otherwise - awsome fit - true athletic Medium, not too tight, no too loose 5'10 muscular 160lbs 40 in. chest 33' waist- awsome material - awsome pockets, tiny hood.
The hood lays more or less flat on and around your shoulders in a manner much like a traditional "hoody". Because there is no rigidity to the material that the collar is made of it does not stand up or cover your neck if it is somewhat unzipped and open. If you just pull the hood off or don't put it on while the piece is fully zipped closed then it will likely sit around your neck in a style akin to a neck gaiter or balaclava.
fra. No it does not. The Desna Jacket is made with a combination of Hardfaced Powerstretch (almost softshell like) throughout the main body and regular powerstretch under the arms and on the hood. It is a great hybrid jacket because of these two fabrics and works well as a mid-layer and stand alone fleece. I hope this info helps!
This fleece blew me away. It is by no means windproof, but functions very well as a midlayer under a shell. And the range of temps at which you stay comfy is what blows me away. From cool fall weather hikes down to about 10F skiing (capilene 3 and a shell), it handles it all. The neck comes up high and the hood is thin enough to wear under a helmet. Super light, durable, wicks moisture away and the thumbholes work great keeping it in place and keeping the snow out.
Gary. The Desna Fleece would be a perfect layering piece under your shell for Rainier. It is a "hard faced" Powerstretch Fleece coupled with regular Powerstretch in the hood and on the sides of the jacket. 'Hardfaced' fleece is fleece that has been calendared or treated with a tiny bit of heat on the outer surface of the jacket to provide increased wind and weather resistance. Again, perfect for a mid-layer that will be used alpine climbing. As a matter of fact, I just ordered one of these for my self last week for similar reasons (ice climbing.) I hope this info helps!
Also, how will this jacket perform for winter running vs. the M.H transition soft-shell? The Transition is great, but unless its 20-30degrees, I tend to get a little overheated even with the jacket alone. Thanks
mikelj. I would probably get an XL due to the fact that the Desna has a pretty 'active' fit. The Desna is made with 'hard faced' powerstretch fleece which is pretty wind resistant but it has no wind blocking laminate like the Transition Jacket. I think this would be a great piece for winter running for this reason. Another Jacket to consider would be the Super Power Hooded Fleece Jacket from Mountain Hardwear as well. It is even in our Excel Run collection! I hope this info helps!
Love it. The high collar/hood keeps your neck/face warm. Wear it under my shell on cold days. Athletic cut, but a bit of stretch for powering thru the crud.
David. There is not a drawstring at the waist. Having climbed in this jacket often I have not found a need for a drawstring. The athletic cut of the garment and the stretch of the fabric keeps the jacket down around the waist in most if not all conditions. Hope this info helps!
