Excellent insulation layer.

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

This jacket works great as an insulation layer. I go back and forth between this and a light synthetic puff jacket for that purpose. I've had it for going on 3 years now. It blocks a small amount of wind, is stretchy and comfortable. I've used it for peak bagging, trail running, hiking, mountain biking, xc skiing and everything else I do.

-The sleeves are long if you're not using the thumbholes, but there's no way around that if you want the thumbholes to be functional. You could always cut and hem if you don't like the thumbholes.

-I've never experienced getting it caught on a bike seat, but I think I have a long torso.

-The neck zips up to just above my chin, which is very nice and was a selling point for me. With it zipped up all the way, the hood fits snug without being restrictive on my big noggin.

-Wicks well, dries quickly. I've used it both with and without a vapor barrier jacket under it.

Not quite a winner

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was given a Desna Jacket as a gift and if it weren't a gift I'd return it. Here's why:

I have a pretty standard body, with legs, torso, arms in good proportions and, depending on mfg., wear either a medium or large shirt or jacket, usually large.

This large Desna is so long that it goes down to my crotch, about 3" longer than my MH Sub Zero parka. Looks dorky, but more importantly it is a perfect length to catch on, say my mountain bike seat. Too bad, because it is a perfect jacket to throw in the Camelback, but I probably won't.

The other issue is the hood. Great, I thought. Nope. It is huge. I have a large head and wear either a 7 5/8 or 7 3/4 hat. This hood is so large that a slight breeze whipped right in the other day and did nothing to keep my head warm. My daughter suggested that it might have been designed that way to go over a helmet. If so, it is a dumb idea, since there would always be a big gap between the bottom of the helmet and the face.

So it could have been a winner, but isn't. For the price, it should be.

All time favorite item.

This is my all-time favorite piece of clothing. Useful for everything from ski touring to alpine climbing and cragging, this quickly became the only layer I used for everything.

Great product but check your size

  • Fit:Runs large

I loved the weight and material but ultimately I had to return it. I'm 5'11" 180 lbs with athletic build and normally wear Lg including the other MHW gear I own. This was sized larger than what I'm used to. Won't hesitate to buy MHW again and the folks at BC were fantastic, great to deal with and no hassle with the return.

Versatility and comfort

I love this fleece. The design and fit are excellent, and it feels great. It's slim but not completely form-fitting, and it's super soft. My only real issue is the sleeves - I have fairly short arms so the extra length is occasionally a little annoying for me, but it's not an issue when using the thumb holes. I wear this mostly as a layer under a synthetic jacket, and I'll point out that the exterior's texture is perfectly built to allow movement under layers. I'd highly recommend this if you're looking for a good layering piece. It also makes a great casual hoodie. Go for it.

I want to love this jacket...

Purchased this jacket with the expectations of using it as a versatile mid-layer for cold weather ice climbing - what attracted me to this piece is the high zip up - I really like having a warm neck. What I found was that this thing is super baggy and becomes more so with time - I am 5'10'' and weigh 160. It is also dress length - I understand you want it to fit under your harness but there is too much that just bunches up. Also, the thumb holes are a bit small & bulky rendering them worthless when trying to use them with a glove - I experienced pain every time I used them climbing. Thank goodness for the BC return - sending this piece of expensive goodness back to the gods.

      inital impressions

      • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Not sure about this one yet, just took it out of the bag. It?s a very nice technical fit, however, not as form-fitting as I would expect from a technical fleece. The hood is also less ?ninja? than I expected ? more like baggy. I wear a medium in nearly everything, and I?m considering returning it for a small. (175#, 5/11, 41? chest, 31? waist, ordered medium).

After using this jacket for a bit, it has become my favorite piece of clothing i own. paired with a light or medium weight wicking base layer, its an awesome cold/cool running jacket. Vents heat pretty well and stops a touch of wind. the zippers are freaking amazing and the whole build screams comfort. if i could change one thing it would be the fit of the hood. needs to be a little tighter.

Should serve me well as a running jacket and climbing/ skiing layer.
